All due respect to Kati, I think a bod like Blaine's ain't gonna keep in shape with 3x 30 mins training per week. #nonexpertopinion

He doesn't have to keep that "bod." That's the point. He seems to be doing it (to the extreme he does it, by how own admission) to make himself feel better because he has unresolved body/mental health issues.

Blaine does seem to have a too pedantic an approach to eating, but my point was more to the amount of training that it takes to gain muscle. If both his eating habits and training habits are signs of mental issues, that's a different thing altogether. Re-reading my first post, I might have come off as insensitive and that was not my intention in the slightest.

From a strictly physiological standpoint, how long you're in the gym is far less important than what you do while you're there. There are people who go to the gym for 30 minutes 3 times a week and get jacked. There are people who spend 3 hours a day in the gym and get nowhere. It's not about spending time in the gym, it's about using that time well. 30 minutes of going all out three times a week is definitely going to get you results, provided your diet contains enough nutrients to support growth.

Always open is very quickly becoming my favourite show. This episode especially. My Dad's side of the family battles depression and anxiety (me and my sisters included) and many of my friends do as well. It makes me really happy to see people talk about it in such an honest and open manner. That makes it easier to open up to people when I feel like they will listen with an open heart.

Did she seriously try to suggest that people DON'T ask people with cancer what triggered it and what they did to make themselves have cancer? They do. All the time. Why do people act like people with chronic illnesses get taken any more seriously?

    • frontbutt

I think she meant it more as people understand a bit more when it's something physical rather then mental i.e. a broken leg. Maybe cancer wasn't the best example but I doubt she meant any harm by it.

When I start feeling really bad, I watch Werner Herzog documentaries. It reminds my that no matter how bad I feel, there's at least one person who is way more depressed than me.

Also, you get to learn about chickens and how prone they are to hypnosis.

I think its more of how you approach it? like Blaine seems to approach it as an appearance thing that is linked to his own self worth. Check out how James Willems, -someone whos built and regiments themselves a lot like Blaine- talks about his own fitness on his yt channel and i think you'll see the difference in their thought processes.

If anyone is a student at a university and wish to get therapy, look for the student health center on your campus. Because I'm a student I get free therapy sessions with both a psychologist and a psychiatrist. Also my medication for a whole month is only about 1.50 US dollars. If you're afraid you can't afford therapy or don't want to get insurance involved because you want to hide the fact you're getting therapy from your parents (like me) definitely look to see if you have a student health center that provides therapy. I promise they won't look at you like you're crazy it's generally a safe place for people seeking help.

This was a very nice episode, and reading the comments ws nice to see people feeling comfortable about admitting to their own health problems.  In college everyone jokes that we are all suffering from anxiety and depression because that's college, but that makes it feel normalized and ok.  I have suffered from panic attacks since my junior year of high school, my first one was while on the field at a hockey game.  I didn't recognize it then, but once I got to college I suffered majorly from anxiety and depression.  All I did was knit and watch Netflix.  I had no one to turn to and was too far from my support systems to call on anyone.  I couldn't eat or I would throw up, and I lost 15 pounds in just 2 months.  It was terrible. I am much better now that I am grounded in my senior year, but leaving school looms over the horizon.  I hope that what I've learned to cope over the years will help me stay healthy in the "real world".

I suffer from panic disorder and it can be really annoying for people around me when I get a panic attack. I can absolutely see how from an outsiders perspective it would seem like I'm just seeking attention.

Obviously panic attacks are super different for different people but for me it's a high pulse, sweating and sometimes hyperventilating. Mentally my brain turns into this mode where the space I'm in feels like it's shrinking around me and I get claustrofobic, I just NEED TO LEAVE immediately. Also, no matter how many dozens of attacks I've gone through in my life there's always the belief during the attack that THIS is IT. "I'm actually going to die. This time it's not just a panic attack but I'm actually having a stroke and I'm going to die."

The best cure for me is just someone talking to me. It can be anyone. About anything. Once someone starts talking to me my brain just starts to calm down and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's just that my brain notices that I'm not alone in this situation and starts to relax.

I love Kati so glad she was on. Reminds me that I have missed therapy the last couple of weeks. I really need to go before school starts up again. I am a Psychology major and thinking about how I have anxiety and depression it does suck. I am medicated I go to therapy but sometimes it really is just me not practicing what I am learning. I got into Mindfulness and that has helped a lot. The only problem is avoid my triggers like the plague and it affects my social life. Especially in this political climate.

This episode just kinda made me sad. I always push my problems down because that has seemed to work and I just let them go away on their own. Whenever they come back I just wait until I'm over it again. I will probably never go to therapy because that means I'm recognizing my problems and I feel like that will just make it worse. I'd rather just let them go away so I can have the good parts in between. Every time I come close to recognizing a problem I'm like nah I was fine the other day I'm just faking it or something. sigh just writing this out is weird

i'm 13 mintues in and i'm already crying. I went to the doctor for the first time (i know im 17 i never went to a doctor thats a whole different story.) and we did like a regular physical she had me take like a little small test for depression and said I have pretty severe depression. That was in decemeber. And I didn't believe her. She said that it could be a big reason why i dropped out of highschool and why i am overweight and i should go see a therapist. The things they're saying makes sense to what my doctor said now but again i'm 13 minutes into the episode.

I also have a question should i see someone about my mental health? I don't wanna spend money on a doctor if its not nessary. Idk this is all so new to me. I'm so confused about it.

Absolutely go see someone. Your mental health is the most important thing. As someone who went to see a therapist for my mental issues, I can attest that once my mental health improved most other aspects of my life did as well. Like Katie said in the episode you can do a small number of appointments and then get more as needed, and most therapy is covered by insurance.

I don't suffer from anxiety or depression, in fact I have an almost total lack of anxiety altogether and that causes it's own problem with my relationships with my parents. I'm also an introvert with ADHD which combines to create moderately strong disinterest on most subjects and social interaction. I don't really have a point, I just needed an outlet.

Unfortunately that is quite a common experience. Chronic/recurring mental illness in particular can be quite dangerous as it has a way of latching on to self-esteem and changing the way we think about ourselves. This is mostly because when we experience such an illness for an extended period of time we lack the ability to recognise the illness as anything other than our normal behaviour.

But you don't have to tackle this on your own, as I hope this video and others commenting have made clear. I hope you feel able to get help if you feel you need it, and I wish you all the best.

I've watched this 2 times now. Doing homework while listening, and I can't help but feel the tears welling up in my eyes but never falling, and the pressure in my head, my fingers shaking just won't stop. I really enjoyed this, more than I think I realize. I'm not elevating Blaine to godhood or anything, however I do feel for Blaine, empathize really, with his struggles and his uncertainty about whether his little acts of catharsis are justified. This made him seem so much more real and relatable. You are a Bro, Mr. Gibson.

I know a lot of people like to watch RT content to get away from their problems and they probably felt like this episode was a downer but it's nice to step back in reality for a second. These are real issues and I'm glad we can all talk about it. Also HUGE FUCKING PROPS TO BLAINE.
