The discussion about confidence & giving yourself credit made me think of this:

If you've ever dealt with serious depression or issues of self loathing, it's sound advice to keep in mind.

Typically when someone says "poly" they mean polyamory, which as MicheleFeghali said, it means "many loves". And there's several different variants. Sometimes it's a couple that has other serious relationships. Other times it's 3 or more people who are all in a relationship together. Lots of ways to interpret it. I'm in a polyamerous relationship right now. I'm married to my husband, but he has a serious girlfriend who we both consider to be part of our family. While I don't have a sexual relationship with this other woman, she is very much part of our family and we're very open with each other. I don't look at her as my husbands girlfriend, but rather just another unit in our family. The three of us even share a bed.

The biggest thing that is most important thing for us is honesty and openness (which is important in any relationship) but I feel like it's even more important when it's a poly relationship. Otherwise things tend to go south.

Lawrence talking about self-confidence makes me think he should look into the idea of dialectics, statements which are totally opposed but still simultaneously true. I'm in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy right now, and one of the main tenets of DBT is, "I am the best person I can be, but I can also always try to be better." He should remind himself that while there is always room to improve and do better things, personally or professionally or whatever, he's still doing the best he can and that's something to be proud of.

Polygamy = "many spouses", polyamory = "many loves". The first is usually based on religious practice while the latter is more about multiple emotional relationships (with or without sex). Loved hearing everyone's thoughts on this segment!

"kink shaming" The Shape of Water is pretty ironic considering the entire purpose of the film is to respect and love The Other. It's also a river god. Who wouldn't want to fuck a god? Don't b ignant Mariel.

Hey Lawrence, not sure if you will see this but I feel very similar to you when it comes to being satisfy with my work. However I have been trying to change that. In my mind I have always felt that being proud is dangerous and the only way to achieve or create or to improve is be pushed down, to be trash because somehow being proud of what you did means you are satisfy with what you have done. I believed that feeling of not being worthy enough or to feel nothing I have done is ever good enough is the only way to improve. But I am starting to think this is flawed.

I have started running a lot recently and just finished my first marathon. The training has been quite hard and spending hours on end by yourself while you put your body through pain and fighting your own mind to not give up on your runs has forced me the question my motivation. The day before my first marathon I found this saying "Be proud but never satisfied". At first it didn't meant anything to be, sounds like just another saying. However after my marathon, which I absolutely f-ed up and made it the most painful mentally and physically thing I have done in my life that saying hits me. I have never been more proud that I somehow didn't give up despite the pain despite the constant nagging to just give up or take a short cut during the marathon but I was not satisfy. My time was crap. It was no where close to where I wanted it but I was still proud. I am starting to believe that pride and self satisfaction doesn't necessarily come from the same source and that they can co-exist and maybe it is important that they co-exist. I think, to some degree, my constant denial of my achievements may have push me to continue to improve however the damage it has done to my confidence and my mental well-being from the constant self discouragement has be slowly destroying me.

I think to improve and create require two forces. When you need to design or be creative you need to be positive, you need to be confident, you need to believe in yourself, you need to be proud because that's when you can freely explore your thoughts and your ideas, that's where you can gather your strength to train or push another day. When you execute on a your idea or your creation or your training, you need to be critical, you need to be hard to satisfy, you need to be disciplined because when you execute it is when you need to put your idea through wringer, to check yourself, to question yourself. Both are necessary to the process.

Lastly, I think during my runs as I question my own motives I found that my self loathing may not be of completely pure origins. I think I find some pleasure it telling myself I am worthless and nothing I do is good and that the self loathing is not there purely because I want to be better. Maybe deep inside there is this desire to fulfill this self created underdog story that we want in our lives. Somehow if I put myself down, the day I rise I can be more proud or more glorious because I came from trash.. except at the beginning I made my own trash and buried myself it in.

As a Polyamorous person, I have found the biggest difference between a poly relationship and an open relationship is in a poly one all partners are "committed" to each other in the same way people in the "traditional" monogamous relationship are committed to each other.

I currently have a wife and a girlfriend, we've been together as a triad for 3yrs now.

My advice is talk it out with your partner, communication is key to any relationship. It may be an uncomfortable to bring up, but it can grow into something worse if you let it sit in your head for too long.

I am also  open to answer any questions anyone who reads this has.

I've made a comment to a similar effect before, but I'm really uncomfortable with how casually people discuss looking through other's phones. If you're being cheated on and lied to that is awful and you have every right to be mad, but this feels like two wrongs don't make a right scenario. And saying if you have nothing to hide then is shouldn't be a problem is how the NSA justified wiretapping all of the United States, or the profiling of certain groups.

If you're at the point that you have to go through someone's phone, you should just end things because you've lost trust in that relationship on both ends. If you feel like you're being lied to and confronting the person doesn't reveal the truth, what's the point in moving forward in that relationship? Whether they are lying or not if you lose trust in a person then that's it, it would only become toxic to keep this going if no matter what you don't feel like the other person is being honest with you. You deserve to be with people you can trust, in all relationships.

Thank you, I agree. I was really surprised that everyone else was so...okay with what Maggie was saying.

I believe people deserve their private time. And I respect people's privacy. Some people need less privacy "time" than others, and some people are more open than others... but I think part of respecting a person is respecting their personal space.

"No boundaries" doesn't mean to breach someone's privacy, IMO. I don't have my boyfriend's password and he doesn't have mine. And it's not because we don't trust each other, it's because we respect and trust each other. I feel like Maggie looks at it at a completely opposite view.

...Basically, I would never date Maggie hahah, I could never be with someone with that mentality.

Polyamory in many ways is just redefining what is considered cheating in your particular relationship outside of the implicit definition of cheating in a monogamous relationship. It will take different forms for different couples.

As to Christopher's question, I would talk to her about it. It's clearly weighing on you and you will feel a lot better if you tell her.

So female ejaculation is a thing, my wife does it sometimes.  There seems to be a great debate as to whether or not it is pee, vaginal lubricant, or whatnot.  I personally don't care what it is, I just think it is HOT AS HELL!  Ladies, please do not be embarrassed if it happens to you.  If your significant other finds it to be gross, dump that person immediately.

As someone who has watched every single always open so far, i have to say. This was a phenomenal episode. I am not a big funhaus fan but lawrence was a phenomenal guest and was given great room to speak and was honest. Additionally, as it is a finale i would like to add. Barbara, your hosting skills having very clearly improved over the last 3 seasons. This episode was a great example of that. You did not rush people for answers, you did not cut people off, you gave all the time that was necessary to discuss these great topics and enough time for each individual person to show off their personality. This was a longer episode and was a more serious episode while still being extremely funny and would like to tell you that at least someone is noticing your hard work. I cannot wait for season 4! (p.s. pls bring lawrence and maggie back)

edit: wanted to add this is being written upon my second viewing of the episode

I was one of the many people who disliked Lawrence when I first started watching Funhaus content, but that was a long time ago. I relate to him more than anyone else on this website. I was seeing a therapist for a little while but felt I was more intelligent and knew how to fix my problems more than someone I was paying to listen to me (not that it's a bad thing to go to a therapist, I just knew it wasn't working for me.)

Lawrence you are an absolute delight and it's really great to see you in stuff where you don't feel the need to be the character version we see on Funhaus! Great episode and I can't wait for season 4!

Its almost like white people are known for doing really fucked up things in Africa and Asia over hundreds of years lmao the sentiment behind her statement is that the idea of "whiteness" is one built on power and always has been. There is no "white culture" I'm 100% Bavarian/Dutch, and can be extremely proud of that culture, white is the color of my skin and has nothing to do with my culture or heritage specifically besides what that color means in its ability to open doors others can't societally. There's a reason why you're not allowed to be proud of "white culture," because the only thing specifically attached to being "white" is using using your skin-tone as justification for being a piece of shit. That's why I hate that I'm classed as white or Caucasian because neither are actually accurate terms, similar to how "Hispanic" means fuck all when discussing Spanish and colonial Spanish culture. Sure, Germany and the Netherlands are part of the Caucasus but so are parts of West Asia and Northern Africa so that's not even an accurate title for central/western European groups. According to the federal government I'm the exact same white that a fully Portuguese guys is. Fuck for a minute in history even Germans weren't considered white, by original Anglo Saxon standards I'm just as "savage" as they would have considered someone with dark skin at the time because I'm not a true Anglo Saxon. This book does a better job than I ever could to explain the sentiment and how the goal posts have constantly moved throughout history. If this triggers you, ask yourself why. 9781844677696_Invention_white_race_1-bb9

Systemic racism is different than casual discrimination, which is what people mean when they say "you can't be racist against white people". You can't be racist against white people because white people have never been systematically oppressed.

After watching this episode, as a long time fan of Funhaus, specifically Lawrence and Adam, since they appeal to my self-confidence issues; I must say that Lawrence has done a good job of encapsulating the "always could have been better" mentality. Plus, for a robot, he's very good at psycho-analyzing others (regarding the poly/commitment issue).

Maggie's mentality when it came to phone snooping really lost the plot for me. If you have strong suspicions, confront your partner first. Don't violate their privacy. Being in a relationship doesn't mean they lose any right of privacy. It kinda contradicts her "be honest or get out of my life" Modus Operandi.
Yes, her partner betrayed her trust, but two wrongs don't make a right.

I agree completely with the Maggie thing. If you don't trust someone to the point that you need to invade their privacy then you need to confront them. If you still are suspicious then you need to move on from that relationship.

Can someone explain to me how it's okay for Mariel to say "Give us a little prance" to Texas? Even if she is joking it made me feel uncomfortable, especially when we live in a time with Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey like sexual harassment happening everyday. And I'm pretty sure this isn't the first time Mariel has said something along these lines to someone before in RT content.

You mean uncomfortable because it's homophobic? I guess the test would be if she'd say that to anyone regardless of sexual orientation. I feel like she would. She's also just asking (he could say no) while not holding any power over him so I don't think it's that similar to Spacey or Weinstein.

I think it's okay because they are friends outside of work and understand the context in that they are comfortable and having fun with each other. The issues that you are comparing it to involve a power difference between the people involved where the victim feels forced to do something or is uncomfortable with the situation and that not he case here. I can kinda understand how maybe you feel uncomfortable but the two people involved seem to be comfortable and really thats all that matters.

I feel as thought some of you took my comment the wrong way or maybe I stated it incorrectly. I was personally in a situation where someone I thought was my "friend" would time after time grab my butt and make sexual remarks towards me. I didn't want to make a scene so I would often just let it go. After a while I decided I would confront them, when they did it and they would respond by saying "oh take a joke" or "lighten up". After a while I told some of my other friends and they gave me the advice to stop hanging out with that person. Since I've opened up to people about this happening to me I have seen it also happen to others, which is the reason behind my comment. When Mariel said that to Texas, it reminded me of how that "friend" would treat me. In no way did I mean to start any drama, I just don't want anyone who is being mistreated by another person to feel life they have nothing to do.

I resonate deeply with Lawrence's confidence issues, as I'm sure many others do, part of why I wanted him to be on always open. Unfortunately the only therapy I attempted was cut short (it was free from school) because I couldn't properly describe the problems I have, or even what emotions I feel. So I'm just left figuring things out by myself.

I get that completely. I'm seeing a counselor on campus, and it seems like every week before going I have to plan out or reach for what I'm going to try to talk about just to feel like I'm not wasting their time. And even then it's near impossible to identify that nebulous wrongness that I can't fully comprehend or put into words. It gets tedious, trying to verify that I have a problem when it's not fully clear what exactly the problem is. I'm not sure if that's anything like what you're going through, but you are most assuredly not alone in that.

That being said, it's sucky that you'd be dropped for not being able to express yourself sufficiently. Ideally, part of the purpose of therapy is to help you understand those feelings that you can't really describe. But I suppose that's the price a student pays for having access to free, albeit limited, counseling. Good luck in figuring things out!

In regards to the confidence section, I feel that this show gives me confidence. Just the reaffirmation that it is good to be confident in your own body and of your personality helps. So thank you Always Open!
