Make off-screen characters LOUDER! They aren't that far away, they are just off-screen. Their voices shouldn't diminish by 1/2, maybe like 90-95% if you HAVE to do it.

    "Agreements like these..."

Guys, I think something is wrong with Raven.  She keeps repeating the same line over and over, unaware of everyone and everything around her.  It's like she's frozen in time or has ten second memory loss or something, almost as if it's scripted.  She just REALLY wants to get the point across that she doesn't trust any of them.

All jokes aside, spectacular job CRWBY in the sound department and making everything run as smoothly as possible.  We appreciate all the hard work, so keep it up.  :)

Awesome! So does Rooster Teeth do all Foley, or do you get some recorded elsewhere? Or use sound libraries for some? I'm making a game and I know how important Sound Effects are, but it's also, in my opinion, the hardest thing for games. For someone working on a small budget, what would you recommend regarding SFX? Thanks :)

    • ChrisKO FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Might steal your tacos

We do a bit of foley as well as use sound libraries as our main resource. It all just depends on if we have the tools to record it here.

Our libraries span pretty far and wide, which I'm super grateful for, but it can get a bit pricey. There are tons of good(ish) free SFX libraries out there that you can use as your baseline. Then, of course, you can look at sound dogs and other single-sound-license sites to slowly build your library. I'm not a huge fan of those, but they're useful when you only have < $50-100 and need a range of sounds. If you can save up, I'd try to buy a library from BOOM, Blastwave, or Sound Morph that fits what project I'm working on. I love those 3 so much. Sound Morph's sounds are currently my most used.

      Hope this helps! :)

When the audio is delivered to editorial, it's in uncompressed .wav format at 48k/24b. From there, any compression that happens, occurs during the muxing process. Does this answer your question?

Kudos to the sound artists! I've seen other documentaries on TV and it's amazing what ideas they come up with to create a specific sound.

What's the craziest sound-making device/produced sound combination you've made in RWBY so far?

    • ChrisKO FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Might steal your tacos

Thank you! And that's a great question! I'd say the craziest thing we had to put together was a full-team effort and it was RWBY4's big Grimm, the Nuckelavee. A whole lot went into that one, from gathering some of the folks around the studio to come and crack their necks, fingers, backs, etc. to all the various layers for its vocalizations (Bill Orendorff's vocalization, + creatures, + animals, + pitching, + distortion, + so. many. things.).

Oh yeah, that thing was positively horrible on so many levels. I'm happy that there's been some focus on sound. It's often so inconspicuous, yet when it's not there...

I can't help but be reminded of the LOTR Appendices where they talk about how they find the sounds for the final mixes, like waving a toilet plunger through the air for the Watcher, or playing animal roars across sewer tunnels.

"Agreements like these are built on trust and needless to say i don't trust a single one of you"

"Agreements like these are built on trust and needless to say i don't trust a single one of you"

    "Agree..."

Man...i really hope you don't have to go through that with every single line, i'd imagine it gets overly repetitive after a short while

However, without someone to do that, the audio would probably be nowhere near as crisp as it is - and i thank you all for making the show sound so damn good.

I can almost guarantee that it is like that for every line. Back in high school and college when I was studying film production and editing, even the very simple work we did then required listening and watching the same few seconds over and over again to ensure it looked and sounded right. And that was nothing compared to the attention and effort that CRWBY goes through for this show. They do have presets that make the job a bit easier, but you still have to listen to it after the presets to ensure they're doing their jobs properly. Because one thing I learned well when I taught myself how to edit, is that presets are more of a shortcut than a fix-all. Makes the fine tuning a bit easier.

But, I am also exclusively speaking through my own amateur experience. So I could very well be completely wrong, and speaking out of my ass. butt

@LazarouDave, thank you! We most assuredly do listen to things on repeat. :P Longer post incoming below!

@Fenrir_Shade, you hit it pretty well on the head.

We listen through/clean up every line of dialogue (as well as we can) to make sure we've got as many of the unnecessary clicks/pops/breaths out of there to keep it sounding nice and clean. It's a lot of listening to things on repeat, which can definitely can be maddening at times, but it's totally worth it when you can keep the audience well immersed in what they're watching/listening to.

As for the "presets" or "templates", you're spot-on there, too. It makes getting the episodes done more quickly an easier feat to manage, but it is certainly not a 'set-and-forget' thing. It helps get us 60% of the way there during mix per character, but we still have a lot of balancing that goes into it as well as changing things up based on how the actor's recording went for that session. Then, of course, there's reverbs and other things we'll do based on locations/emotional decisions in that particular episode.  thumbsup

      Thanks for the comments, friends!

It's just part of being an editor. During the process, you end up watching and listening to something over and over and over until it just becomes background noise at some point. That's why it's important to take breaks so you can give your brain and ears a chance to reset.
