Beck is only 26 episodes, so it's not that bad. You could watch 2 episodes a week and still do it as long as Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.

If I were to try and sell someone on an anime, depending on how you look at it it might not even be an anime, is the Danganronpa series. It started out as a game, but now has an anime adaptation of the entire first game and another anime that tells its own story in the world. It's a really interesting story that I feel will take a bit too long to describe in this comment, but the reason I feel it's super hard to sell to people is that it takes absolutely forever to watch and understand. This is a series with 3 main series games, another full fledged spin off game with the first main character's sister, and 3 full season animes dedicated to it. If you don't spend over 100 hours learning Danganronpa inside and out you didn't do it right.

My hard sell is totally Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin. It's a very deep, but dark story about 7 youth in post WW2 and the messed up lives they had to endure to become the men they are today. The ending is super worth it but its not for everyone.

So, I imagine it's hard to organize with RWBY and other animation in full gear atm, but is there any chance we can get the long teased "Gray and the gang talk about Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron Blooded Orphans for an episode" episode someday soon? It's such a great show that I have to imagine is one of the shows that is (heavily or not) influencing Gen:Lock and would love to hear what Gray and anyone else that watched it thinks. Thanks ;)

One of my personal favorite animes is S-Cry-Ed it is weird like weeeeiiirrrd. Not FLCL weird but still weird and amazing. That or Big O, which gets super existential in the second arc but is also a great late 90's early 2000's anime.

Awesome anime that is hard to sell but worth watching: Shinseki Yori (From the New World in English). Reason that it's hard to sell: First few episodes are dense as fuck. It's not the kind of thing you can turn on in the background and check in on every so often while playing board games. There is a lot of in-narrative exposition that contextualizes events and the actions of characters later on. An inattentive viewer that is on their phone or otherwise occupied might lose interest fast as they don't understand what is going on. It's a series that takes its time world-building so that it can pay off a lot of awesome plots and sub-plots in really cool ways. I've recommended this series as some of the best sci-fi/fantasy genre blending I've ever seen. The barrier to entry is investing your time in this world and cutting out distractions, and a lot of times the inability to multitask turns people away. I've only convinced one friend to watch it all the way through, and then we talked about it for weeks, sometimes on the verge of tears because it is that fucking good.

For an obscure amine: Plastic Memories. It's a beautiful story. There were some episodes that had problems (like trying to insert comedy that didn't really work and just got in the way of the story), but it's still totally worth it. I watched it when it was in progress and then again a couple of years later.

Hi Yssa. I don't know how to reply to a reply so I'll reply here.

In a lot of ways this show is about how people deal with the death of a loved one. Without spoiling too much, Tsuikasa works in the retrieval department of a company that makes giftias (near-human androids). The androids have a limited lifspan because after a certain amount of time (around 9 years I think) their memory starts to deteriorate. At that time they need to be retrieved because they will become unstable and dangerous. Retrieval is done by teams of two: one human and one giftia. The owner of the giftia has to sign an agreement for the retrieval. Frequently owners are reluctant because the giftia has been a member of their family. Early in the series, the audience finds out that Isla, the giftia that works with Tsukasa, only has a couple of months left. Tsukasa finds out much later, after he has worked to form a close bond with Isla.

Hey. So it is my first time watching Fan service. I have a feeling i'll be there more often ;). I have one question do they only talk about Japanese anime or others too. And if yes then did they talk about "Wakfu"? I would love to hear what they thought about it. Or any of You guys for that matter.

Hey thanks for the reply. I was curious mostly because where i live anime and comic books are still more or less obscure topic. Pretty much only ones i got to see/read as a kid were French or Polish. Marvel, DC, manga.. those are still kinda new to me ;) Legally watching anime online (because physical releases have astronomical prices) isn't so easy. Even Netflix failed me. I mean.. c'mon no Fullmetal alchemist!

So yeah You guys just became my anime catch up program ;)

We are anime-exclusive, but we sometimes like to throw in some "lol cartoons" for our news segment in the beginning. There was an episode in one of our previous seasons where we kind of covered "American anime"--maybe we can talk about other anime-style shows made outside of America like Wakfu someday!

Also, I hope you enjoy our show! Thanks for watching :)

For an obscure anime... i'm putting forward Oban Star-Racers. it's one of the earlier Thomas Romain shows, and it might be a neat opportunity to talk about Japanese/foreign co-production and french anime-esque shows?

It actually has a pretty decent English dub, too.

Not sure how far on or off the beaten track it is, but I enjoyed the hell out of Maoyu Maou Yuusha. It wasn't anything that spectacular but it was a pretty nice change of pace from the stuff I usually watch. The pace was a lot slower and the plot was a little more mature, diving into everything from religion, economics and war. Fun watch.

If you like that show, I would recommend a show called Spice and Wolf. Maoyu has been called a knockoff of Spice and Wolf. The story is, a traveling merchant meets a Goddess, and they travel around a medieval world having economic adventures.

Fair warning, the anime leaves off early in the story. But the main story in the light novel is finished, and fully translated. They have even started translating the "sequel".

I've never heard of Maoyu Maou Yuusha, but I HAVE heard of Spice and Wolf! If MMY is like S&W, and judging from your description of it, McSwaggly, I'll put it on my list :0

(Also, I feel compelled to say I would rather read S&W via manga or light novel than watch it. Even the manga explanations were dense enough that I was like ?? It'd take me a while to register because I'm kind of dumb.)

I'd like to see what they think of Girls Und Panzer ... The anime that got me watching anime regularly (I'm a tank nut!) ... I think the show is hoot ... the follow up OVA and film were spectacular. Storyline should be easy for Mike to follow :D ... Since Funimation are doing (Dub) Space Battleship Yamato 2199 now... I'd also like to see what they think of the storyline there also ... subtly different from the original storyline, better animation and excellent soundtrack.

Some obscure animes that would be interesting for Anime club would be Death Parade, Gakkou Gurashi/School-Live and Selector Infected WIXOSS. Death parade is a show about life, death and choices, with a really good story and visuals. Gakkou Gurashi/School live is about four school anime girls doing school anime girls stuff, except it's not and turns to be a story of escapism and survival. Selector Infected WIXOSS is a card game with no time wasted on explaining the mechanics or the cards, said time is instead used for story and a madoka magica like twist.

I liked that Cole brought up Punch Line, because it was one of the first animes I thought of when I heard the question. I almost dropped it after episode 1, but held on just long enough to get pulled along through the rest. Punch Line might win the award for most genres mixed into a single season of anime, and it does a good job of exploring and subverting some of the fatal tropes of those genre. It'd be fun to find out how the rest of the cast would react to the insanity that show brings and somehow turns into a great story with an awesome conclusion.

I have a few suggestions for Anime club

    1. Death parade: A quirky fun/dark anime about grim reapers who play fucked up boardgames with various couples in order to determine whose soul goes to the afterlife.

    2. Kings Game: AKA the goriest game of Simon Says ever. A transfer student finds himself at the centre of a death game having survived a similar ordeal at his last school. He now has to try and beat the game or watch his classmates die in horrific and brutal ways.

    3. Blood Blockade battlefront AKA Cthulhu meets Cowboy bebop. After a mysterious fog surrounds new york city. Overnight the city changes and becomes inhabited by strange and eccentric beings from another world. Leonardo Watch finds himself at the centre of a conflict that threatens to throw the world into chaos, all the while trying to save his sister. This is a fun anime with an excellent roster of characters and a kickass soundtrack that Miles will love.
