Couldn't Barbara have just borrowed the book? Or didn't she know that's what Libraries do?

I like the way Blaine had to be told by Daniel that albums are the way music is supposed to be listened to. I'm pretty young and I think listening by album is much better, even though I have Spotify and use it. Also, picking and choosing Pink Floyd songs is blasphemy! You should never break up those albums, they're one long jam! Same goes for Zeppelin but it's not AS essential, but you definitely should listen by album in that case too.

I was born in 84 so i'm a few years older then you guys. I had a pager when i was a teenager and smart phones were not a thing when i started driving and became an adult. I work in the tech world though now and I my job wouldn't even exist without what we have now.

I think your looking at it wrong though, Of course you couldn't do your job with out the technology, your job only exists because of it. The real test would be to drop you in the middle of no where and see how you do. Even if you lost your phones you could always find someone who had one and could help you. The real test is like a zombie apoc where everyones tech stops working and you have no out.

My phone-meal etiquette is if someone else has their phone on the table to use, then I take it as a non-verbal as it's okay to use like at lunches. Otherwise I leave it alone

I liked the documentary, though personally I would have appreciated the experts to talk more about the hard science and psychology involved. Though it bothers me that people are taking this as a wake up call, it seems so obvious to me that it's healthy to spend time engaged with the physical world and your physical senses. It scares me that awareness is fading for the need for balance.

Can we get more of these podcast/commentary on the RT Documentaries or other big productions like Immersions? I personally would find it really interesting to know what went into the production of those shows. Great job on the documentary, I am looking forward to the next one.

I understand why people don't listen to albums anymore because of shuffle. But I primarily use spotify and I listen to albums in order all the time. Much easier than I did with iTunes. Sometimes I couldn't afford the album but with spotify I press play and it is all in order for me along with that artist's other albums. In fact, I think I've gotten more into albums since I began using spotify.

    • WalnutSpice

I find myself listening to full length albums more when I put in a CD or Cassette. I feel like I have to much power with Spotify. Like on a tape or CD you only have that one album, on spotify I can listen to anything anytime so I constantly find myself flipping all over the place

    • VeryPlite Medli the Earth Sage

Maybe I'm different from everyone else but I actually enjoy listen to an album a couple times over before using shuffle, some albums tell stories or build in a unique way and I enjoy the overall piece compared to single songs. But I didn't feel that way until I had spotify since I would hardly buy full albums before.

Great interview, I loved the extra insight to what pre-tech is like for our generation. Nice Simpsons(?) reference at the end there too (release the hounds).

That guy that never shuts up in travel did happen pre-tech, there's a comedy about it with Steve Martin and John Candy. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, just looked it up ;D

So what there they using to film around the hosue and at the doctors, gopros? That footage looks far to good for an old film camera.

    • buddycombden FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

They said, the only exception to the no tech rule was handi cams to film in situations like that (I think around 35min)

    • WalnutSpice

They used tape for the video recordings. Also, the film photos look good because film photos are by nature way more high quality than digital cameras because film catches light with all detail, nothing left out. Digital cameras sense RGB colour and convert it into pixels, film goes down to the tiniest detail that can get lost in a pixel. That being said, I'm not bashing digital cameras, film is just naturally superior but digital is catching up. The reason digital is now more popular than film is continence and price. Film you have to buy (Roll of 24 photos normally) and then have to pay to get them developed.

I found the conversation about how awkward it is to eat alone without a phone fascinating. I live alone and only bought a smart phone for the first time last week. I go out to eat alone at recounts sometimes, just to get out of the house. It took me a long time to get over the awkwardness. these day's i'm all like "Yep just out on a date with myself, nothing to see here people."

I tend to eat alone (as in totally) with netflix or something. Out in public, yeah it is kind of "honest I have friends"

I'm 41 so I was an adult before the iphone etc. In relation to being out in public and eating alone or sitting at the doctor's office, you learned to think ahead and bring a book , some magazines, some music, etc. There were always TONS of magazines in doctors offices etc. There was just plain alot more reading when you were bored I think. If not, it was totally acceptable to just sit there quietly with your thoughts and not be thought of as a looney, lol. They didn't have the advantage of growing up learning to think ahead for these situations,

Plus people look at you differently now if you're just sitting there doing nothing in public, I know. I've never owned a smartphone. I only started using a cell phone in the last 3 years or so. I'm not against technology at all by any means, or ignorant of it.. I'm a total computer nerd and have built many systems from scratch from ordered parts. I can install, manage, and fix operating systems and software. My friends and family always think of me first and call me when they have any kind of tech problem. I've been paid (privately) to build computers or do upgrades etc. I play alot of pc games by myself,(and console games since the good ole Atari 2600) online (used to be huge into MMO's), or with my kids (private minecraft server). I'm on facebook, twitter, youtube, various websites and forums regularly. My kids have an xbox one.

But all I own are a decent gaming PC and a very simple flip phone. All I can do on my phone is make calls, text(which I rarely do, I buy 2500 text bundles that last me months), and take really crappy pictures , lol. They DO still sell them, I just got a new one this month. A friend bought it for me as a gift. He wanted to buy me a cheap Android phone, but I talked him out of it. I know how to use one fine, because we bought my kids Android tablets a few years back and have upgraded them since. When I go to visit them (I live alone now) I sometimes use one if I have nothing else to do. Plus I have to fix problems on them sometimes or pay for games or apps.

I just choose to leave all that at home when I go out. Alot of people think I'm weird or assume I'm some backwards old tech hating weirdo, but I'm used to it and don't feel the need to defend myself. Ya I DO get strange looks when I'm just sitting at the park doing nothing but watching my kids play, no phone in my hands for long periods of time. I think some of them suspect me of being a creep, lol. I've just chosen to try to stay comfortable with just being with myself, and I made that choice before the controversy of people overusing their phones. I don't judge them or anything, though people can be rude sometimes when I'm trying to visit with friends or family. I think one of the reasons is because I have pretty bad social anxiety, and I know just burying myself in a phone when out in public would be too easy. Ignore others AND my own thoughts, worries, and insecurities. So I guess I just wanted to point out that we do still exist. Not out of ignorance or hatred of technology, but just as a personal choice. I kind of enjoy it.

I agree with Barbara that it was nice to see her and Blaine as themselves and not a persona. That is one of the reasons i like Funhause so much, because they regularly have shows were they are themselves and not a persona.

I would love to see more of these and see other members of RT and see what they are really like and not what their persona is. I understand that these are normal people with persoana lives that they want to keep personal and I respect that and want them to have part of their lives private, but it is just nice to see who someone is and not who their persona is.

I loved the documentary and loved the opportunity to" spend more time " with Blaine and Barb out of the office. But... I go really upset during the '$1million dollars but...' shoot lunch break when no one interacted with Barb. I actually might have had a little cry, because she looked so nervous trying to introduce a news item conversation and was totally 'on the outside looking in.'

I am a locum pharmacist, even when I'm at a new place and know no one, I would NEVER sit next to someone who was unoccupied and ignore them! I ask permission before getting involved in conversation with strangers (so I don't get stabbed) and I'm perfectly ok if people say they want to read or get their head together, and I too prefer strangers asking permission to talk to me, but totally ignoring coworkers (or anyone whose name I should know) is not on!

Plus the entire NHS in the UK is still held together by pagers/bleepers

: type in their number&your number on a phone, wait by phone, (repeat) (fucking repeat again), they call you back.

Or: receive message, call number on screen from phone.

    What is hard about that?
