I always thought "woah" and "whoa" were actually homophones. The former was an exclamation of excitement and/or awe, while the latter was a call to slow down, usually to a horse.

On the Spot with Sally and Gavin while they do not have access to the alphabet in ABC's of storytelling! That's a show right?

Cool to see Sally and the RT become more familiar with each other and branch off into doing more content together.  She has to be my favorite guest to see on the podcast.

To be frank stating that any word "should" be pronounced a certain way is pretty interesting, because "oe" was borrowed from Latin where it was originally pronounced "oi" which was borrowed from Greek where it was originally pronounced as this long "ee," and if we went back further we could trace the phonology of it to roots in other languages... Language evolves, and in this case it seems to have evolved back (?). Like the Greeks pronounced it with the hard e (though written as omnicron iota) , but the Latins bastardized it and Latinized it to become oi (as in coil, but written oe), and then as Latin evolved we dropped the oe (and the oi) and began simply pronouncing the soft (e), Latin at that point was evolving rapidly as the language came into contact with Germanic and Slavic languages, among others.

And... on that note, of language evolving (which it does today much faster than it ever has), because language is completely subjective and arbitrary, there cannot be an incorrect way of saying it in an objective sense. You can say it wrong. Full stop. But whether something is said correctly or not is determined by whether or not other people are saying it that way. Aluminium and Aluminum are equally right, Davy chose Aluminium and then changed his mind, in that case, to Aluminum. But even if he hadn't... Even with names, usage (including context) determines both pronunciation and definition...

Not that it matters anyway, because it's a pretty dead language. It's only really spoken in the rural parts. And it's quite different then what is taught to the south of the country.

The standard is still actually aluminium. I imagine it always will be as the chemist that named it decided upon aluminium after changing it back and forth twice. US chemists and chemistry books were developed during a five year period where he decided upon aluminum, hence why even to this day the general public still use aluminum despite the international scientific community using aluminium.

I too will defend the displaying of the alphabet for On the Spot.

The comedy of the show (for me) comes from both the contestant's creativity as well as their ignorance. In the ABC's of Story Telling, their momentary ignorance of the letter they were on was funny the first couple times, but after that, it's like telling the same joke over and over, and becomes less funny. So I say, ditch this particular part of the ignorance comedy to promote their creativity comedy.

The Greek alphabet you showed there is the current Greek alphabet, trust me, I went to Greek school at my family's church after school every Tuesday night for 6 years. I also went to Greece this past summer (my first time out of the country!!) to visit family, and they do have signs that have those Greek letters on them around Athens (and everywhere else... It's the alphabet, dude).

A really interesting thing is that when I was visiting my grandparents' old village in the mountains of Ioannina, I found out that my grandparent's first language wasn't even Greek: their village had developed it's own language from being secluded in the mountains, like apparently this is something that happens all across Greece... Kind of like the different accents of Britain (but way more cool).

(BTW, any other Greeks out there cringe when people who don't speak Greek try to pronounce the letters of the Greek alphabet? No offense Burnie, but YIKES.)

Love Sally! Great to see her again. Though the usually lower brow humor and lesser academic topics and usual shenanigans are great, its great to have the higher echelon of education of academic discussion. plus the dichotomy of her intelligence and more academic jargon and speech compared to the seemingly lower average level of the other podcast presenters is quite fun and humorous. Great stuff.

Love when Sally le Page is on, so pleased there's another show with her in the works! I think the new format is a fantastic idea and really improves on 'Let me Clarify'; batch recording them so she can be there in person is a great step, plus I feel Chris is a perfect addition and would really add a lot of comedy to it.

I'm from the Midlands, Birmingham does have a silly accent. It's higher pitch and more sing-songy then most English accents but too posh compared to a Welsh accent.

Opossums and possums are the same thing.
There's a species of marsupial in Australia called possums apparently, if you're referring to that, but they where named after the american o/possum.

I spent days at my last job falling into a rabbit hole of unit standards. From memory, GMT is based on solar time whereas UTC is based on atomic time.

Essentially, IIRC, GMT defines a second as a 86400th of an Earth rotation, whereas UTC defines a second as a SI second (aka one bog-standard second). Earth rotation is slowing irregularly, which means the GMT second and the UTC/SI second aren't strictly equivalent (down to billionths of a second, so don't worry too much about it). In other words, UTC is constant, GMT not quite. Still, UTC is adjusted with leap seconds to approximate GMT, because it'd be weird if we let it drift to the point the sun rose at midnight or somesuch.

As a bonus fun fact, UTC is Coordinated Universal Time, or Temps Universel Coordonné in French. You'll notice neither spells UTC, because why would it? they wanted it to be the same in both languages and chose UTC as a middle ground.

I absolutely love Sally, she's not only smart but she's beautiful all the same. Having said that, the fact that she thinks it's called the "police alphabet" was one of the cutest things I've ever heard. Granted she probably just couldn't think of it at the time so she had to say something, but it's called the NATO Phonetic alphabet (alpha, bravo, charlie, delta, echo, etc.....)
