I had to go back and see the interview with Burnie and Adam Sandler but goodness gracious, small Burns is almost the same, with just a little less edge.

I'm from Yorkshire, my best mates cousin is from south yorkshire. 15 miles away and although he uses simliar slang and talks at the same speed (Sean Bean speed) his accent is completly different. And slang is alittle different but will be found in yorkshire. An alley way (thin passage) to me is snicket but to him it's a ginnel. Both orgin points are Yorkshire but one is used in North Yorkshire and one South Yorkshire but because this is a county both phares cross and everyone knows what they mean but they use one over the other. Super strange but the Yorkshire accent has being watered down alot over the years, same with all accents in UK tbh.

Maybe in America and England it's rude to just say what you want. Here that's the norm. If you starts saying thanks and please all the time you'll just sound like a pretentious chad. Worked as a waiter/bartender for two years, literally couldn't give a f if people said please or thank you. Just say what you want, you know why I'm there, I'm not doing you a favor i'm just doing my job.

If we're talking about things people say differently, why do Americans pronounce twat with an 'o'?

On from the accent conversation. I'm from South Yorkshire which has a very course accent. In a 20mileish radius from me in Rotherham we have Sheffield, Barnsley, Leeds, Wakefield and Huddersfield which all have very different accents. Like Leeds is a much more refined and easy to understand accent whereas even I have trouble understanding my Barnsley born and bred step father sometimes.

Are doctors in the US not obligated to inform the patients on the procedures they are going to perform?
It's like the first thing we learn in med school: Inform your patients and get consent.
It was so painful listening to the expalanation of epidural anaesthesia (and as the word implies you get anaesthetic :) ).
I get that Lindsay is not a medical professional, but she should be able to give a basic explanation on the procedure, assuming she received an explanation from her doctor. (which I have to assume she did not)

I can only explain from my experience, but my wife has given birth to our two children, and got an epidural both times.  At the time the doctors and anesthesiologists were explaining what they were doing and what it's all about, my wife was going through contractions and getting barraged by multiple nurses and other specialists. My guess is that she was probably overwhelmed and focusing on breathing through contractions.

Just a very busy, overwhelming event, and you don't end up remembering everything from it.

      Could be that yeah.
Though usually (at least in my country) the doctor and soon-to-be-mother decides beforehand what kind of anaesthesia they will use during childbirth. (of course complications can happen and then all plans go out of the window, and you won'T have enough brain power to listen to everything)

    • flowbot_21 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

A lot of people generally just don't care exactly how it works when push comes to shove and they just want something that makes them not feel pain. They do (or at least are supposed to) fully explain the procedures

    • Carnagus FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Yeah well, maybe I'm looking at this from a different perspective. I always listened very carefully when someone described a medical procedure to me, but I wanted to be a physician since I was like 6.
So yeah maybe hasty description combined with "I don't care just make the pain stop" can explain it.

The /r/anime thing was about what the subreddit was about rather than anime being some superior quality because it comes from Japan. It isn't a subreddit really about animated content in general. Everyone there was originally there for Japanese content so allowing US based content on the subreddit would open the flood gates to a bunch of stuff like spongebob and all that. It wasn't about the integrity of the show, it was more about what the subreddit was about specifically. Just felt I had to point this out since the /r/anime mods still get a lot of shit over the decision.

I progressed too quickly with my labor so I was unable to get the epidural and had to go "natural". WORST pain in my life, I bled so much that the 3 hours of trying to stop the bleeding are a blur I barely remember. Now I'm 35 weeks pregnant and dreading going through labor again.

I prefer to watch anime dubbed because I find myself reading just the text rather than watching the actual anime and because of that I don't get immersed in the story and I don't remember most of the show/movie. I will watch anime with subtitles on if there's no other option but I'll watch again if it becomes dubbed.

    • OrangeGalen FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I'm the same way, though I feel it's worse with movies. With subtitles, you're splitting your attention -however slightly- and that can make a major difference in someone's experience. Especially with movies, since the entire story needs to be told in 2-ish hours and you don't get to really see character's personalities to 'get' them like in animes, which can have hundreds of episodes if it's a long-running/established show. And even in shorter series, you still get a bit more with them than in movies.

*And when I say movies, I'm not talking about anime movies.

I was the same for a long time, but nowadays English voice overs all sound really cheesy and overdone to me. Dunno if the Japanese acting is better or I just don't pick up on it, but I'm all about subs now.

It might be a bit of a stretch to say that the UK has the most regional accents of ANY country. Maybe it has the highest density, but I'm sure countries like China or India (or even Papua New Guinea considering the insane amount of different languages they harbor) have a higher number of different accents, if not as concentrated.

Also how I feel about sub vs dub. It really depends on the voice actor. Some of them are awesome some of them are bad. Being english or Japanese alone doesn't make it better or worse. And sometimes things like an English dub actually fit into the story much better than the Japanese dub does, Hellsing and Black Lagoon for example. However shows like Drifters nailed it with the Japanese dub.

Thank you, Burnie, for talking about RWBY season 1 being poorly received. I've never understood why a show that tropy, anime generic, and just genuinely bad would continue.

I wrote it off and thought of it as the first RT show that wasn't for me and I pretty much always felt alone in disliking RWBY. Maybe now, reading between the lines that season 2 and on got better, I'll give it another try.

It's kinda funny on the accents discussion. I'm originally from California and so is my Mom but my Dad is from Michigan, and my step-mother is from Texas. So although my accent is predominately western (or American, however you wanna put it) because of my Dad and Step-Mom. I'll occasionally slip into midwestern and southern accents or mix them into my speech without noticing it.

Every region in the US has it's own accent/dialect. Hell the NorthEast has like a dozen different ones within 4 states.
