generally i find that if a diet is making you feel weak and/or dizzy or something like that, it's your body telling you that what you're doing ain't healthy, you can eat healthily without starving yourself

Thursday podcasts are alright, but it would also be nice if it was every other week to help with the dissemination of content. The 1 on 1 style is great as long as the focus is on that and not on the third wheel off camera. This episode it was alright, nice balance, but in previous ones my thought has been "why not just pull out the couch." Like the Monday podcast if you're off camera/mic you're off camera and mic. Off topic is nice in that you can just walk on set and leave. But if the focus is going to be on those two people it needs to be just on them. Granted the side station does add allot to the conversation when it's needed, so there's value in that. But if it becomes the center of conversation you loose the effect of what you're trying to get out of the 1v1, it should only enhance the conversation not become it.

A lot of these diets are actually pretty bad for you.  Please only do diets that are certified and peer reviewed by nutritionists and preferably have articles published in a medical journal.  For example, juice cleanses, not great for you.  If you are on a diet and are losing more than 2-3 pounds a week then it is not healthy for you.  The best advice that nutritionists and doctors will give you is to eat less and exercise more.  Paleo and gluten free diets all have certain benefits but also deny certain nutrients that your body needs and are worse for you in the long run unless you make sure to add in replacements for what's missing in your body.  As another example I know many vegetarians and a few have had vitamin B-12 deficiencies. Nothing wrong with being a vegetarian, but you'll have to work to get all of the other nutrients that you're missing.  Bill Nye's new show on Netflix has a good episode about this that anyone wanting a new diet should watch.  And just to be clear, dieting is fine, just chose a diet that is healthy. My diet doesn't restrict any foods, it just restricts the amount that I eat. In my last health check, I have perfect cholesterol, sodium levels, healthy weight range and everything.  I still eat cheeseburgers and the worst stuff whenever I want.  Alright, "steps down from podium"

Sophie sounds like a complete idoit, all these weird things she are doing have no long term effect, like people that lose weight in big brother (they all gain it back in like a month, look it up), except even then there is a result. Every "benefit| Sophie thinks she is getting is strictly from the placebo effect.

I think your thinking of the biggest loser. The only that happens is because their bodies are put into extreme stress and made to workout really hard. The whole 30 thing is just removing foods that aren't necessary to ones diet like preservatives and added sugar. Also the effects aren't placebo because removing preservatives from a diet creates cravings for them, what Burnie and Ashley are going through, but once the habit is broken your body naturally rewards you with endorphins (happy hormones). Its the same feeling that a smoker gets when they no longer feel the urge to smoke, you feel lighter and happier.

I can't speak on the other things she does but that doesn't mean you should attack her for it.

Poor Bernie and Ashley both are too dumb to know "diets" don't do anything, at all. Though i dont watch you guys for intelligence so im okay with it but it is sad that you guys fell for any sort of diet besides ones that avoid your death/serious harm like dairy free diets if you are loctuse intolerant.

Diets to me are the one of the most unhappy things that I won't do ever. Not only you are probably eating the most untasty food ever, it's also too regulating that causes a lot of stress. Sure it might be healthy but is it worth it to destroy your mental health in the process which it's not to me.

It's great that people can do these diets but don't try to convince to do one for the sake of doing it because I don't want to be miserable doing it.

@swordking123 Not all just some. Some really do help like cutting out sugar and unnecessary preservatives helps significantly with those who are overweight and want to make a first step to losing some.

Also Adam Ruins everything video was about 'low fat foods' not diets, two very different things.

@KnightWa1ker You are aware that Adam Ruins Everything is an entire half hour series and not just a bunch of Youtube clips right? The episode that clip comes from is from an episode dedicated towards dieting and exercise. The episode (on top of the whole "low fat foods" subject) covers that sugar is the probable cause of all the things fat gets blamed for, counting calories and fitness trackers are essentially guessing games, and Extreme exercises can hurt your metabolism long term. Check out the episode, it's really informative. (If you look hard enough you can find full episodes on YouTube if you don't have a cable subscription to check them out on trutvs website. Heavily modified for YouTube but it's essentially uncut.)

@Chiron723 Yeah I do realise it is a 30 minute episode, (I live in Australia and refuse to pirate or illeagally stream content so I haven't watched the whole episode, I assumed it was all about low fat food and similar topics, I assumed wrong as it seems) I was just rebutting @swordking123's comment saying that all diets are bad. I just wanted to say that not all diets are bad for example cutting out sugar is a good first step.

The youtube clip was just meant to add to that debate by showing that foods with sugar make you fat and not that the whole episode says that diets are good/bad.

And I know that the clip says probable cause but I have family and friends who are living proof that sugar makes you fatter. Also the topics you state about the episode while being about health aren't about diets, like whole 30 which is what @swordking123 was implying in his comment.

I thought that raccoons didn't have saliva glands that is why they wash food. Is that a myth or is there some other reason why raccoons wash food?

    • RedRose84 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Find me a land mammal that doesn't have salivary glands and I will be very surprised. Of course they have salivary glands. Dunking food in water is a preference, not a necessity. It's largely observed in captivity where water sources are always very close by, not common in the wild. They aren't going to haul food all the way to a water source before they can eat it. Saliva is absolutely necessary to be able to swallow food, and very important in starting the digestive process. No mammal has a mouth that can function while dry.

Be careful with any sort of extreme diet fads, especially if they talk a lot about nonspecific "toxins". Your body already has a natural way of ridding itself of harmful compounds with the organ known as your liver and unlike these fads, the liver has over 500 million years of real world success.

I agree with this, and it's why I chose to do the Whole 30 instead of other things. The Whole 30, specifically, is designed to let the body naturally reset itself by removing certain categories of food for a short term. The most important part of it, though, comes after that 30 days when observing how a person (as an individual) responds to each category of food when adding them back. Three of the food categories are selected based on science about their effects on the body when consumed in excess (I think the others are just the authors' fanaticism). After the short-term experiment, I had data available to better customize my dietary practices long term; it was very "customized" results in the end, and I was free to apply that data as I saw fit. For example, for me, I found I didn't really have a problem with legumes, and grains and dairy are mostly okay for me (just had to cut back on rice and wheat), but sugars in ANY amount definitely were an issue for me more than anything else (everything from congestion on consumption to digestive upsets). Some of it was common sense, sure, but experiencing it first hand really hammered it home for me, and I feel a lot of confidence now to form my own long-term strategy based on what I learned about myself. Now, I just let the body do what it does naturally without bombarding it with too much of certain things, and I more mindfully recognize when I'm hitting a point where I need to say "no" to something. It's all about treating the body well long-term, for sure!

Ashley and Burnie! I'm so glad to hear you are doing a Whole 30, and I hope you get something valuable from it. I did a Whole 30 back in late 2015, and it truly changed my life. After getting over the carb flu at about Day 14, I felt better than I'd felt in years. Mostly, though, it was the period of adding foods back at the end where I discovered how my body was reacting to certain categories of food, and now I have some better long-term eating habits that have made a HUGE difference in my health. I got my cholesterol down to normal without any meds, I got some weight off (still have more work to do in that area), and my whole system feels like it is running better.

Sorry to gush! I just really liked how doing a Whole 30 changed me for the better long-term, so I love hearing that others are giving it a try, too!
