I watched this podcast live and I haven't had the chance to listen to this until tuesday morning. I've spent almost 5 days wondering what the hot dog butt story is.

I can say I have indeed tampered with peoples food. Years ago working overnights in a deli down the block from a college you deal with a lot of asshole abusive drunk college kids. So fuck them, I feel no guilt.

I don't get people who are rude to waiters like why? Is it really that fucking hard not to be an asshole? Even if you take the possibility of them spitting in your food out of the equation just don't be an asshole what is your problem?

Burnie mentioned how the international audience would get mad about the tipping discussion, but as a Canadian I hate it the most because the American culture has come over here but we already pay a lot more for money. I usually tip anyways, even though the food costs more so 15% is more and they're making more but whatever. Thing is I remember forgetting to tip a bartender once for pouring a beer and he got pissed at me and I gave him what I would have and walked away thinking I shouldn't have because that's the complete opposite of what tipping culture should be. It's not gratuity, it's pretty much just paying as much as you would be, but sometimes more, I'd rather only tip when someone earns it or leave my change and not count the percentage.

the tipping thing is dumb, i only tip if im sitting in to eat, if im going to your place, and picking it up, what did you do to deserve to be tipped? you handed me a box with my food in it, and gave me a piece of paper... no, fuck that, you get no tip, if im sitting there, and you come by and fill my drinks, and we have a nice conversation, and chat, and you take my order, and enjoy doing the work you do, ill give 20-30% i dont care about how much money you make an hour, i give tips when im being serviced on

The vast majority of restaurants, it is the servers who are packaging up your food, putting the little sauces in the little cups, napkins, sides, flatware, etc, not to mention making sure everything gets timed correctly so it's all hot and ready. Tipping less for take-out is fine, but you should tip something.

Bingo. If I'm doing the services that you'd normally be tipped for, I don't give one. Picking up pizza/chinese for example. However if I were to get something like carside to go, I'll tip because they have to package it all up, bring it out to me, etc. They're rendering an additional service by walking my food out to me so I'm not inconvenienced.

The thought of that being a practiced maneuver from the waitress is a clear sign these are men. How do you think we put in tampons?

I'd say there is a bit of a difference between a tampon and a hot dog that just came off the flat top/out of boiling water.

"One guy dealt drugs ..." only one? There's a reason restaurants don't drug test and retail jobs do.

I'm with Max on the foodservice retribution, I was in line at a fast-food place the other day behind a jerk with a giant family who kept fucking up their orders, and then the guy came back and aggressively asked for mustard, cutting off the person placing their order, and then came back to complain again for some reason ...  it'd be justifiable to shoot him on the spot, much less spit in his burger. But nobody did, because they're better than him.

When my order arrived, they plated it for eat-in rather than to go, and the guy behind me tried to make a joke about it

    "That was a to-go order"

    "Sorry :gets a bag:"

Guy behind me: "Ha, bet they won't do it again!" or something along those lines.

I shut him the fuck down: "With what they've been through in the last half-hour while I was in line, I'm not gonna complain that they forgot the bag." in a jovial tone, of course, but staring into his eyes and not smiling. Rather the opposite of smiling.

I think he got my point. And also that's why I will never work in foodservice; I'd fillet somebody (who deserved it). I did work as a cashier at a grocery store, and ... I'd like to not remember that part of my life.

Worked the register at a Toys R Us for a few months. Most soul crushing job I've ever had. Mothers trying to steal shit constantly. Shoes, Pokemon cards, diapers. Anything. And then all the people saying they're tax exempt because all the toys they're buying are for the church and not for their 5 kids that are currently trying to break the bouncy ball machine and claw grab machine and screaming at the top of their lungs.

Burnie's margarita story is very relatable.

Senior year, spring break.  I got a 45 oz margarita and vaguely remember getting back from the bar to where my towel was on the beach.  Next thing I knew my friends were waking me up saying it was time to leave and only one out of every five words I spoke were coherent.

I had the best pizza of my life after that.

Working hard was the standard. It shouldn't be appraised and given some sort of a reward on top of a wage.

Tipping doesn't make sense if the expectation is you work hard anyway. Do construction workers get tipped? why does service get some sort of strange reward? How about your garbage man, hell I bet you're glad he does his job. This is all ridiculous on a logical and a moral argument.

    • Ryutsuisen FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

The problem is the base pay; because tipping is expected service staff get paid less than half of what a garbage man makes. If you don't tip, they don't pay rent. If the base pay were increased to a functional wage, like what a construction worker makes, then the entire tipping culture could be cast aside. Incentives for service staff could be the same as every other profession, if you're rude to the customer you'll likely be fired. Don't want to be passed over for a promotion? Then do good work! This would require employers to pay their employees more money upfront instead of passing the cost to their clientele. They would rather be cheap.

    • Rad-Watson FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

      @Ryutsuisen.

I didn't consider the base pay issue.

I don't think it can be compared to a promotion. Working hard ought be the standard for a good wage. It seems like a shady issue propagated by the tipping system which is getting out of hand.

I understand it's a complex issue but I don't think it means it should exist, it is not a good situation altogether.

Incentive should be pay, and employees should be able to be fired for poor performance over a period of time.

I like the idea but hate the cause; a culture that pays its service workers badly and makes itself feel better with pocket change instead of consistent performance with consistent fitting wages. The labourer is worthy of hire and if they don't meet the standard fire them and find new hands.
