    St George's day is an interesting case, because St George may be the Patron Saint of England, but also the Patron Saint of several other countries, including Spain and Georgia (The European Country, not the American State, although I'm now wondering where the State got it's name from). You could argue coincidence, except for the fact that all three of these countries have at some point used the St George's Cross, red cross on a white background, as a flag.

    I remember reading once that St George was actually a Roman Soldier who protected innocents against the abuse of his fellow soldiers back when Rome was amassing their empire, so you never know; maybe the 'Dragon' St George supposedly slew was like a crocodile or something, and the facts were just embellished as time went by.

    An italian who came to America made the pizza in America. The orginal "pizza" was some Italian dish that was like the pizza but more of a cake type thing I think if I remember the documentary I watched correctly. He made it flat because of ingredients I think and less money and then it became a big thing. He named it after himself I believe or something. I don't man this stuff was a long time ago but I had to comment that Bernie was originally correct with saying Pizza was made in America

    Appreciate the Australia shout out, but I'd like to point out that the last major time people 'hung out with bats' on Australia Day was the Cronulla Riots, which was a very serious case of racial violence. We do have casual racism, (which John Oliver talked about well in his live show here recently), such as some people (namely bogans) jovially discussing the problem with having too many 'Lebos' [Lebanese people] or 'Abos' [Aboriginal people]

      Right on dude, I agree that Australia is a racist country (just ask Adam Goods) and I call Australia day racism day because all patriotism is inherently racist but....... carrying bats? I've lived in Australia most of my life and I, and everyone I know have never heard of anyone taking a bat out for any reason except to play cricket.

      This conversation left me with two questions, 1 where the hell was this lady going? I mean I lived in Sydney during the riots and never even thought about taking a bat anywhere. 2 why the hell would you go to a place where everyone is carrying bats? If these people were in Sydney there's heaps of nice beaches why go to the one with all the idiots with bats? More people get injured on an average Friday in the cross than at the beach on Australia day. I think that the people they were hanging out with were wimps.

    Why would you pronounce .gif like the peanut butter brand Jif and not like the word gift without the T?..

    • Mysta FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

      Because.. gigantic, giraffe, gelatin, George, savage, ginger(TWICE!), suggest. There's at least half the words with g that are soft.

    • Kalilaila FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Chaos Light

      1 year ago

      GIF is a hard g not a soft g; what the formats creator uses doesn't matter, because there was a pre-existing JIF file extension and image format. The JIF images are the same format as the present day Jpeg ones. If you were talking about a gif image, then you used a hard g; and if you were talking about a jif image then you used a soft g (aka j).

      Besides, the file extension for GIF is an acronym of Graphical Image File; which uses a hard G, so not using a hard g is just silly.

      @Ashley
      There is no debate. The Oxford dictionary (the maximum authority that defines words in the English language) accepts both pronunciations as correct. And here is why they concluded that:

      Hard G: No idea. Acronyms by definition are abbreviations that are used as words, following exact same pronunciation rules than... you guessed it... words. So the hard G is only used if followed by the vowels "a,u,o", and the soft G "e,i,y" so I don't know how they came up to accept that.

      Soft G: The creator of the acronym defined its pronunciation as a soft G word. Why? so it would sound like "Jif" its favorite peanut butter brand.

      Cheers!

    The absolute worst, gag-worthy, near-vomit thing I ever saw was on some TV documentary. It was in a third world country. A 13-year-old boy had a cut in his crotch, and flies had burrowed inside his crotch - inside his fucking body. He went to the doctor because of a discomfort in his lower intestines and there were dozens of flies nested inside him. I would have shot myself right then and there.

    I feel sorry for Dan because he has to spend more money to rent a car every time he comes to Texas to visit Gavin because Gavin doesn't want to learn how to drive so he can get wasted without worrying about driving himself back home. I'm beginning to wonder if one of the AH crew intentionally made the bicycle Gavin's default vehicle in GTAV.

    I would like a feature that would turn on or off autoplaying especially right now every time you go to a new page of comments, it automatically reloads the video.

    Also, "literally" is one of those type of words. People used it incorrectly so much that it's now just defined the way people incorrectly use it. It's a bit frustrating.

    I travelled from Ireland to London for a Jamie T gig a few months ago. It was a one night only, rarities and acoustic show. He played stuff he'd never played live before, and played stuff that he'd never even released. Tickets were fairly limited and I was so lucky to get some. There were cunts behind us talking really loudly for most of it. A girl in front of us turned around at one point and asked them to stop pretty aggressively. She probably made it worse to be honest because they spent the rest of the show shushing at her. Other people ruin everything.

    Wow. Loving the comments America is making about Australia. Every country has their weirdos and shameful past, segregation in America till 1964, but the majority is good. As an Australian I pride myself on belonging to a country of so many immigrants and cultures. My home town has a large population of Italians and we celebrate their culture every year with the Australian Italian Festival. http://www.australianitalianfestival.com.au/

    Today I learned that in the USA they used corn starch "peanuts" for packaging, while in Europe (or at least the part where I live) you can actually buy them as "healthy" junk food! (Though I guess they just look similar while the production process is slightly different, or at least more sanitary)
    Picture right here
    And this looks somewhat similar

    Glad to hear Gavin and Meg are using Lyft-- I think they're better all around anyway. They're generally nicer, the rides are generally cheaper, and I think the company treats their employees better. One time, when I was walking to university in the early morning (I lived a 15 minute walk away), I spotted a little girl (maybe 8-10 years old) in school uniform, crying on the side of the road. Before I approached her I noticed a guy walking his dog just walk past her. I knew that there were some elementary schools near by, and that somewhere in the area was a school bus stop, so when I approached the girl on my way, I asked if she was ok. I honestly don't remember the exchange, but it ended up with me giving her my phone to call her parents for a ride home. All the while, though, the man walking his dog, who basically ignored her, doubled back to where we were. When he approached us, he just stood there, as if to "supervise". I immediately looked at him and said, "it's taken care of, she just needs to make a phone call."

    While I understand the fear that people have regarding sexual predators, that fear hurts situations like the one I was in, because this girl may have sat there for hours had no one stopped to help. Why did this guy, who ignored someone in need in the first place, all of a sudden so interested in seeing what was going on? That pissed me off, and still does. I'm confident (and I guess reckless) enough to help children when I think they need help. I know that I've been in situations, growing up, where I wish someone was kind enough to help me when I was helpless.

    Agreeing with Gavin and Meg, GIF would also likely be classed as correct as you might not know but flaccid is actually pronounced flac-cid not flasid, but everyone calls it flasid so it is now also correct. So GIF and JIF are probably both correct. But then at the same time. sort of agreeing with Burnie where we shouldn't change how words are said because people say them wrong (but GIF sounds better :)). Good podcast :)

    beating a dead horse but... "Gif stands for Graphics Interchange Format. when graphics is pronounced “JAFFICKS” Then I will pronounce Gif with a “J”

    Gear =/= Jear

    Get =/= Jet

    Gift =/= Jift

    Give =/= Jive

    words with a ‘G’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ can be pronounced with either a hard ‘G’ or a soft ‘G’.

    Words with Germanic roots such as ‘gear’, ‘get’, ‘gift’, ‘give’ (see above) are pronounced with a hard ‘g’ while words with Latin or Greek roots such as ‘gem’, ‘general’, ‘giraffe’, ‘giant’, are pronounced with a soft ‘g’. it’s not exactly a “general rule” that ‘g’ followed by an ‘e’ or an ‘i’ makes a soft ‘g’ sound.

    In conclusion, “GIF” is an ACRONYM starting with a word that begins with a hard ‘g’ sound, so “GIF” is therefore pronounced with a hard ‘g’."

    - this has been bad paraphrasing from an unknown hard g warrior.
