They should do more podcasts like this where they play a drinking game and get drunk because this is one of my favorite podcasts just because of the drunken chaos that happens lol

A bit hypocritical eh Burnie? He's always mad at people who try to take credit for other's links, but a few podcasts ago, he was mad at reddit for not crediting the RT podcast for all the links they got from them.

    Quote:
I've gotta say this its been bugging me. Gavin is right. He's talking about the odds of picking the numers 1-6 sequentially from a hat and when you take a number out you can't pick it again. meaning you would have a 1 in 11,441,304,000 chance of doing so. This is because you multiply the chances for every round, the first round is 1/50, the second 1/49 etc so 50*49*48*47*46*45. For the first round there are 50 scenarios and for every one of those scenarios there is a second round in which there are 49 scenarios, so 50*49. Gavin is right.

@Pennnguin, what do you mean Gavino is right? What you say is correct indeed. But Gavino was suggesting that picking a sequential series like 1-2-3-4-5-6 is somehow more unique than any other combination. But what you said in your post, goes exactly the same for *every* other combination. So the chances of picking 1-2-3-4-5-6 is exactly the same as picking, say, 1-12-6-5-3-18.
So it is true that the *combined* chance of picking any of the possibilities for a sequential series is much smaller than the combined chances of picking any of the other, non-sequential series, but that is simply because there are much more different possibilities for a non-sequential outcome than there are possiblities of a sequential one!!! The *individual* chance however of getting any given sequential outcome, is *identical* to the chance of getting any individual NON-sequential outcome.

Let's say you put the numbers 1-2-3-4 in a hat, and you have to pick three numbers out blindfolded.
You can get the following sequential outcomes:
    1, 2 and then 3, or
    2, 3 and then 4
(and 3,2,1 and 4,3,2 if you include the 'countdown' ones)

    The non-sequential outcomes are: 1-2-4, 1-3-4, 1-3-2, 1-4-3, 1-4-2, 2-1-3, 2-1-4, 2-3-1, 2-4-1, 2-4-3, 3-1-2, 3-1-4, 3-2-4, 3-4-1, 3-4-2, 4-1-2, 4-1-3, 4-2-1, 4-2-3 or 4-3-1.
So there are 24 possible outcomes, only 4 of which are sequential. So the combined chance of getting a sequential outcome is 1/6th (16,667 %), but the individual chance of getting each of the individual outcomes is 1/24th, which is IDENTICAL to the individual chance of getting each of the non-sequential outcomes!

Your gut feeling tells you that a sequential series is more unique, but that is only true if you are talking about the combined chance. Some people seem to incorrectly let their gut feeling thell them that each individual series is individually more unique or special than any other individual series, which is clearly WRONG.

Just listened to this podcast yesterday.
Seriously funny; some of the best genuine LOL-moments since I started listening about #150 or so. I just wanted to mention though, that Gavino is totally wrong about British English vs. American English. I read research somewhere, that since the first moment Europeans moved to the America's, the British language has actually changed *more* than American English has. One notable thing (excuse me for using technical terms here....) is that English used to be what is called "rhotic"; which means they pronounced the "r" the way Americans do now (New Yoh'k-ers excluded). It is thought of as typically American, but it is actually the British who changed their pronunciation to a "non-rhotic" one. Irish for instance, is still "rhotic".

I also seriously doubt Gavino's theory about different accents within Britain being more similar to one another, than within the USA. Have you ever listened to a Geordie accent (comedian Ross Noble) vs. cockney (traditional London accent, for instance Jason Statham), or a Liverpool accent (comedian John Bishop) or Johnny Vegas (he's from Lancashire) or westcountry (Vicky Pollard from Little Britain) or Scottish-English? Hmm seems that comedians provide the best examples, or it may just be that I watch too much "Q.I.". :P

Gavin, I shave outside too. You were right in saying "it's too thick" to shave in the sink. If I shave any part of me into the sink or shower, it immediately clogs. So I take that shit outside.

Loving the maths part of the podcast! You guys are both wrong as it all comes down to order(i.e is it important). Cast one (birthdays) order is not important therefor simple maths like dissus. But in case two (lotty) order is very important to get sting of numbers (1,2,3,4...) then it is one vs the rest. These theories are known as combination and purmutation. therfor gus and co you are correct in case one, gavin (you dumb brit hope you loss the ashes) you are correct in case two.

gavin and the number sequence is so stupid. getting 123456 is the same as getting 41 32 21 27 19 9 becaus e they are numbered differently. the last one doesnt matter. you counld get 3 3 3 3 3 3 and it would have the same probablity

after all of these stupid Gavin podcasts, I'm TOTALLY with Jack on wanting to punch Gavin! -.-
    he's Rooster Teeth's Karl Pilkington.

  • ccttssgdl

I think Gav was trying to say the probabability of getting 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 is lower than getting 1 followed by any other number, he wasn't trying to say it was less likely to get 1, 2 than 1 followed by any individual number in the set. So it was just lost in translation from UK English to "American"
