@Gavin: If you accidentally suck the air out while drinking a beer the lower pressure increases the rate carbon dioxide bubbles are coalescing, the beer foams like mad, and quickly overflows. I spill beer all the god damn time when drinking from bottles because of this and people always give me strange looks.

Loved this podcast especially since I watch almost the same movies and TV shows that were talked about. However, it was a bit sad none of you mention Thor 2 amongst best movies of 2013.

Regarding the Man of Steel conversation. They were terrforming earth the make like Krypton, but i don't think it was ever stated that the Kryptonians would lose their powers. It was my understanding that they got their powers from the Sun. i could be wrong though as i only saw it once.

No mention of The Newsroom, Sons of Anarchy or Boardwalk Empire? They are missing some good TV while watching Friends reruns.

interesting anthropological analysis by burnie at the end of the podcast, i wonder how much that holds

  • mattvarley

Responding to what Burnie said about evolution and why we don't have some things. There hasn't been a situation where we as humans were pressured ecologically to pass on those traits. Let's say in the past there was a person with said trait like broader hearing. For him/her to pass it on to us essentially it would have to be beneficial for him to have it and everyone else who didn't have it died. It's nature selecting that trait to be passed on by effectively eliminating any other trait.

I seem to recall from my anthropology classes in undergrad that when access to women is restricted (due to demographics or whatever), it actually tends to lead to a general reduction in female power, because their apparent 'high value' among the more populous male group leads to increased commodification of women — in other words, treating them as valuable objects rather than as people with agency. Obviously that kind of thinking will lead to all kinds of bad behaviour and the mistreatment of women in their culture.

(As a note, the argument 'since there are fewer of them, they have more power' contains within it the commodification of women as an unexamined assumption.)

(Which made me feel kind of bad and then I turned off the podcast.)

the thing about evolution is that it doesn't happen with a specific goal in mind. it's likely we can't see ultraviolet rays because we just didn't need it at the time. or that it was a detriment for certain ancestors of ours

There must be something wrong with me, because I've never watched most of the shows you talked about (though I have at least heard of them), however I'm one of a zillion rabid Sherlock fans. How is it that you've never known about Sherlock??? How do you navigate the internet without running headfirst into Sherlock references and memes?

A TV show that I both am surprised and not surprised to not get a mention is Hannibal. It was a really good show and though it didn't do as well as NBC was hoping, if they go to sell it off, there have been many channels that have expressed their interest in it. Really hope it comes back for season 2.

    TV = House of Cards

It's a show that finally makes me like Kevin Spacey. Thought it was brilliant and makes me actually excited to see other future stuff since.

Movies = I couldn't think of one movie that I liked above the rest however these are some of the ones I saw this year

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Never saw the first one, not a fan of the series. It was actually a good movie. Nothing more nothing less

Thor: The Dark World - I hated the first one but this one was actually good. I don't know how to describe it...

We're the Millers - Funny. Seems like Jennifer Aniston is making one last push to say "hey! I'm still hot!"

Gravity - Visually amazing. Overall I'm glad I watched it once but probably won't see it again. I just really hate Sandra Bullock.

Elysium & Pacific Rim - Are both of those awesome action movies. Story isn't as important because it's about the action and making that look good and both do a good job. Elysium more so than Pacific Rim.

Man of Steel - I hate superman. I think he's a lame superhero but I actually enjoyed this and it might be because of Michael Shannon playing the villain. (I recommend you watch "The Iceman" on netflix)

This is the End - Loved. Just a decent comedy in the end

The World's End - Loved. If you like Shaun of the Dead & Hot Fuzz you'll like this. Shaun of the Dead is still better.

I think "captain phillips" is my Movie of the year. So damn good from beginning to end.

Fast 6 is really good and The Wolverine is not bad( i love the after credits stinger). Man of steel is pretty good superman movie, and Iron Man 3 is good iron man movie.Thor 2 wasn't bad(I hated all the human characters) Don Jon was a really weird movie about sex, relationships and porn. Hunger games:catching fire was better than first one movie but that's not saying much.

Pacific rim was overrated movie(very generic)

For movies you guys really need to include "The Way Way Back" it was a Phenomenal movie but i think that it was a bit understated. I really enjoyed Steve Carell's performance, it was quiet a change from comedy but he really pulled it off well.
And just in case anyone cares House of Cards should win, Breaking Bad was good but.... House of Cards man...

I wish I saw more movies this year, but I have to say that I am really looking forward to Inside Llewyn Davis, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle! Also, This is The End was probably the top comedy of the year for me (maybe The World's End was better, but I remember more from This is the End) and Gravity was probably the only BIG movie I saw this year and it was great. That said 12 Years a Slave is supposed to be amazing but seems like too much of a bummer for me to make my movie of the year.

As for tv shows, Breaking Bad and Mad Men are always in my top shows, Bob's Burgers was great this year, Walking Dead has been really good as well, and Game of Thrones was great!. Steven Universe was actually my favorite new show this year, and Adventure Time is also a favorite of mine. But I think I have to give Breaking Bad and Mad Men a tie for the show of the year. Eastbound and Down and Hello Ladies were both really good as well, but Parks and Rec has to be the top comedy of the year for me though.

That Nigerian cook video was pretty incredible, but I'd have to go with the Gravity Gun video. Or Bound 2 just because I love Kanye and that video was hilarious. Although there was also a video from funny or die that was a fake holiday movie for Thanksgivukkah that was great.

Can't wait to hear about the video game choices on The Patch!

For movies, Evil Dead. I know it's a remake, but it's done so well, that it feels less of a remake and more of some other group of people who find the Necronomicon 30 years after Bruce Campbell's adventures. After all, the book never got destroyed. For TV shows, American Horror Story: Coven. Last season was quite ehhh, but this season is really good. Lastly, even though I know you won't nominate your own stuff, for internet video, RWBY. Although one could argue that the format is more like that of a TV show, so it should be in that category.

This is the End was a horrible movie. Nothing but constant religious overtones and crude humor with a predictable ending that went nowhere.

I am also wiped out for the day when I vomit. I also tend to pull rib muscles and throw out my back, so I'm sore for the next week as well.

Psh, dreams. I'm lucky to remember one dream a month; and it's usually one that make me go "WTF?!?!?!?".

The brain not making sense to Gavin, stop the fuckin' presses.

Speaking of cat cameras. James May's Man Lab did that recently in Season 3 episode 2 to see how viable it is as a roaming neighborhood watch. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_May's_Man_La...
