The Gus/Burnie discussion on Social Security is truly uneducated in the most painful ways. They're not intentionally passing bad info so I don't feel upset so much as when we are given bad info we make bad decisions and there are a very specific group of people who want this bad info passed on because it supports their objective.

Social Security was meant to be a retirement fund, the reason 65 was chosen was because it was assumed that was the age when most Americans could no longer be productive in service. It also was acknowledged that life expectancy for a man was 77 & for a woman 81. The lower life expectancy numbers being bantered about include infant mortality. The much higher ones that are recognized today include only adults, thus eliminating the people who never contributed to SS from the equation and unfairly imbalanced the rating.

So yes, in 1940 when it was passed they knew people lived far longer than 65 years on average. It wasn't unknown and raising the retirement age as justification is actually counter-intuitive. The easiest way to sure up the fund for the future is simply raising the cap on contributions, currently only the first 117K for 2014 is taxable. If that was raised to double that the SS fund would be solvent another 25 years, if the cap was unlimited the SS fund would be solvent roughly 70-100 years without any alterations. Those projections are again assuming a loss of population which is statistically untrue.

Gen X is bigger than the Baby Boomers, Gen Y bigger than Gen X, Echo Boomers/Gen Z (2000-2020) is bigger still. There is not a lack of workers paying into the SS fund, there is instead a lack of profits being shared with the workers that allow for the SS fund to tax that brings it into question. There is some discussion of pushing a small tax on corporations to fund the SS Fund since they are resistant to paying their workers better. But that is more or less a non-starter for the right in our current political landscape.

If there is a silver lining in all this is that the era of FDR and Kennedy is on the rise as the Reagan/Bush followers of the right simply are dying out. The conservative movement in the US is shrinking at a fair rate though they won't die out for another generation or so. Still the fixes that are possible can be done within the next decade or so.

this is really late and you're probably well by now but i'm a microbiologist and gavin has symptoms of cholera or gastroenteritis. especially if it's from eating seafood (oysters) and has watery diarrhea. best thing you can do at home is coca cola + gatorade to replenish fluid and electrolytes but i would recommend professional medical help. you will have to collect your poop in a bowl or cup which may be weird but... at least it's "content".

I am living in Japan right now. All phones bought in Japan have the automatic shutter sound on them. For video mode, there is the initial sound when you press "record," but after that there is no continuous noise.

In case anyone is wondering, if you have snapchat it also makes the noise, but if you hold down the "shutter"/picture-taking button for a few seconds then let go, it takes a picture without any noise. :)

Not believing in Aliens is not stupid. Even with the size of our universe there is a probability that aliens don't exist. There is a formula to calculate number of planets that have life on them and the answers come up really small. Life is an extremly complex system of elements working together and chance of this happening is extremly small. I'm not saying aliens don't exist but not believing in them is valid and not stupid. So blindly believing in something is billion times more stupid than being sceptical.

I am currently working on a Masters in Geology and I enjoy the podcast immensely when you all talk geology. It's entertaining to hear perspectives from entertaining people who do not have extensive formal training on the subject because it makes me think about things in a diffferent way. Academia gets stuck in a rut with thinking sometimes and needs fresh perspectives, even if they don't make sense sometimes. Keep it up!

So, about the rope. While 3 or more poeple are tugging on the end, the entire rope (miles upon miles of it) is being blown around by wind and tossed about by waves. If the guy in NY falls in, it's not because of something that was done by 3 (or more) guys across the pond. There are too many interfering factors that are greater. To adress speed of push (a pole) and speed of pull (the rope) in outer-space, the mass of the object you are moving (miles upon miles of it) is so great, that the force you could apply is ineffectual. That is to say, you would move yourself and not effect the opposite end. Also Barbara, you don't love me, (wait for it...) because I'm not a lumberjack. lol
