After having to perform a crash landing, an NTSB guy told me that fatal, single-engine plane crashes are about as common as fatal motorcycle crashes. My recommendation to anyone interested in learning to fly is to ask experienced persons, think about your personal priorities, research the matter, ask "...why we're here?" and then, if you want to accept the risk...let's go flying!!

The following article indicates fatal, single-engine airplane crashes occur 2.66 times as often as fatal motorcycle crashes.

yes submarines can launch missiles submerged although it depends on the type of submarine as to what types of missiles they can carry. the us has SSN , SSBN , and SSGN. all of which are very capable platforms

"We do not sow" are definitely the words of Greyjoy, the house that rules the Iron Islands. Basically they're taking pride in being thieves and pirates, and never doing productive work.

"What is dead may never die" is a ritual expression among worshippers of the Drowned God, the religion to which most free Ironborn subscribe. Greyjoys will use the latter phrase, but for religious, not political, reasons.

Just one note: please stop talking about the "proper" pronunciation of words or please go back to school and study linguistics. It's not Gavin's specialty and he is almost always wrong:

      Original post:
      "noun \ˈbü-ē, ˈbȯi\"

      First comment:
"all of which could be Anglicised as either disyllabic [buwiË] (boo-ee) or monosyllabic [bɔɪ] (boy)."

      Second comment:
"I believe that this comment shows that both bwoy and boy were used in 1810 England"

"The 1892 International Webster's Dictionary gives both boy and bwoy as pronunciations."

I've been completely consistent this entire thread stating every time that it can be pronounced either way and has been for a very long time in both America and in Europe.

    • honan FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

(I realise this is a bit late) You do realise you just argued your own above comment and contradicted it by first stating it is pronounced 'boo-ie' and in the second, provided sources stating it shows 'boy' as correct. Im not sure what point you're making, but you seem to be supporting my original claims but don't seem to realise thats what you're doing.

One common 18th century pronunciation of buoy in England (and presumably also America), seems to have been bwoy (/bwɔɪ/). The book A Practical Grammar of English Pronunciation by Benjamin Humphrey Smart (London, 1810) says

      Bw, in the words
      (9) Buoy, buoyance
is represented by bu. They should never be pronounced boy, boyance.

I believe that this comment shows that both bwoy and boy were used in 1810 England. This pronunciation also explains why buoy is not spelled boy.
      books.google.com/books?id=KRY4AQAAIAAJ&pg=PA27&dq=buoy+pronunciation&hl=en&sa=X&ei=vfUVUpmTOJLY9QSPrYGoBg&ved=0CGMQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&q=buoy&f=false

The 1892 International Webster's Dictionary gives both boy and bwoy as pronunciations.
      books.google.com/books?id=qL8WAAAAYAAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=international+webster+dictionary&hl=en&sa=X&ei=10MVUsLPD_W-4APclYGgCQ&ved=0CDAQ6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=buoy&f=false

Both of those sources support my claim and one is British while the other is American. I'm not sure why you ruled out my earlier source for being American because, from what I can see, the British agree with the Americans on this matter.

buoy (n.) late 13c., perhaps from either O.Fr. buie or M.Du. boeye, both from W.Gmc. *baukn "beacon" (cf. O.H.G. bouhhan, O.Fris. baken). OED, however, supports M.Du. boeie, or O.Fr. boie "fetter, chain" (see boy), "because of its being fettered to a spot."

So you have two possible origins, one originally pronounced [bÉ¥i(É™)] (French) or [bÅ“É›i] (Dutch), and the other [boi] (French) or [bÅ“i] (Dutch), all of which could be Anglicised as either disyllabic [buwiË] (boo-ee) or monosyllabic [bɔɪ] (boy).

Sorry to burst your bubble, but just because we don't play in the Commonwealth Games doesn't mean we Americans are actually less educated than you guys, as you've just shown.

im australian and i pronounce most things the same as gavin. I'd say the one who grew up and was educated in england probably has a better education when it comes to enunciation than someone educated in america, simply because it is the ENGLISH language after all. you cant link an american website to support your claims that the american way is correct. that site even shows its origin and pronunciation back then, which is 'boye'- funnily enough, sounds a lot like the way gavin said it. sorry to burst your bubble there champ, but go to a school outside the US and you'll see how wrong you are.

My aunt was a contestant for don't wee for a wii, and I remember really freaking out when I heard someone had died, I was really afraid she had passed. We called her and found out she had vomited right during the show, and was eliminated before the other person had left. it really unnerved me how close she was to something that terrible.

Pretty good podcast. I would absolutely puke if I ever went bungie jumping and someone crapped/pissed their pants. Wouldn't you go to the bathroom before hand just to be sure that doesn't happen? And I can't wait for next week's podcast, maybe even The Patch, to see if Gus got a response from that company about their Retro game system breaking.

This kinda got me right in the middle, during the talk about the "Hold your wee for a Wii" incident. I am very close friends with the son of the woman who died, albeit I met him a few years after it happened. He seems to have gotten better about it, but he's told me multiple times about how surreal (and traumatizing) the whole experience was for him. No one should have to go through that. Sorry for ranting a bit.

This needs to be said. Barbara is a cute, but a terrible pod cast member.

She is a pretty face. That's it! The puns aren't there, and the men talk over her. And she knows it.
