George R.R. Martin has told the creators of the show what his plans for finishing the series are, just in case he doesn't get to finish the book. So they already have a general idea of what will happen, so not everything will be made up.

For what Gavin was talking about with the mirrors, if you were sitting at a mirror that was 1 light year away you would see the earth 1 year in the past. But to use a telescope to look at that mirror from earth, you would be seeing the earth 2 years in the past.

To what Gavin was saying about there being light there already this is true, there is light already there from Earth but that light is already a year old. So you will always be looking 2 years in the past.

Also, Burnie, I too have the issue cooking chicken but not beef or pork. Chicken's problem is that it has to be cooked on lower heat for a longer period of time and if you're using charcoal that's harder to do. It's easier with gas, but I have never gotten it down. Chicken always has to be put in the oven for it to be decent in my house...

I am an EMT and I have to say that there is some truth to what they were saying. There is a greater urgency to get to the patient then there is, typically, to get to the hospital. Most of the things that I see on a daily and weekly basis are not immediately life threatening. Technically, if a patient is alert and oriented, then they can make decisions for themselves and any impositions can be subject to legal action. So, the patient has control over whether or not they go to the hospital, but it is typically strongly encouraged that they do. If they decide to go to the hospital and it is not critical, then we will ask the patient if they want lights and sirens, but fairly rarely.

I'm with Gus on Science is Math. The understanding of math, motions & kinetics of objects and particles translated to physics. The application of physics between atoms translates to chemistry. Chemistry between molecules is the bare basics of biology.

I wonder why it sounds like something out of a movie. It's not like the movie Outbreak used Ebola as the inspiration for the Motaba virus to the point that they used a picture of Ebola to represent Motaba or anything.

My ambulance ride didn't have any sirens blaring, and there was concern that I might be having a heart attack (ended up being a major panic attack). From what I've seen while driving around town and observing them in my neighborhood (I live in a neighborhood with a lot of elderly residents), the ambulances only use the sirens on the way to the situation. They may use a deep horn if they need the road ahead to clear up.

*facepalm* Gavin. One year for the light to get to the mirror, then another year for the light to come back to Earth, 1 + 1 = 2 years. And this is nothing new, Star Trek was using distance as time travel back in the 80s and 90s. Plus, to be able to actually see what has happened in the past, the mirror would have to be put into place via faster-than-light travel; which, according to general relativity, starts to bring about its own complications concerning time.

Also, I always feel like the ambulance is going to the hospital. That or just trying to make the light/get through traffic (which is 90% of the time). But since I live in the suburbs and there's only one enormous hospital, it's pretty easy to see if they're going there or not.

I think I'm the one big exception with the Destiny review thing. I thought there was quite a few things wrong and dropped it immediately (played it twice). I know a lot of people got hooked and are passing the boring game months playing it (and enjoying it too), but it totally missed me. The lack of story and repetitive gameplay just made it fall flat for me. I've agreed with almost everything Ryan's said on The Patch. He said he had a blast playing the glass raid thing, but that's the "end" of the game. I can't invest that much of my time playing a game that I don't enjoy much to get to good parts. It's like waiting in a roller coaster line for 3 hours and the ride lasts 2 1/2 minutes. The problem I see is this: Are people playing it because they love it, or are they playing it because there's nothing else to play? Can Destiny stay relevant after the holiday releases? Personally, I think the "released version" doesn't have enough content to keep people invested for much longer (and the first DLC doesn't come out for months if I'm correct). I could be completely wrong, but we'll see.

So I was really bored and calculated the possibility of seeing a mirror a lightyear away, using a telescope from Earth.

The surface of the lens of your telescope would need to be about 170 million kilometres wide. The Earth is only 12,742 km wide, which means that the lens would have to be a little over 13,2 million times wider than our planet.

This is all assuming that he's seeing an image on a 60in. display. (Which would also have to be interpreted by a computer hooked up to another telescope with a lens that's 170 million km wide.

Gavin is right. kind of. Light travels at the speed of light, Duh. But even so it has limitations. The light we see from all the stars around us are years old. So we are currently looking into the past. There are stars in our sky that have gone out but we still see them because its taken millions of years just for the light to travel to earth. In the same way it takes about 7 minutes for light from the sun to hit earth.

I'ts October third 2014 (1:00am West Jordan Utah) and I just listened to podcast 291. I listened to podcast number 1 on the last day of August 2013, and have been trying to catch up since then. (If I remember correctly about 100 had already been released when I started the series.) Averaging every month to 30 days and every podcast to what?... an hour and ten minutes? I have been listening to them for 14 months, so 420 days, so that comes to 339.5 hours. (14 days) of just podcasts. 339.5 divided by 420 equals .8. and .8 of an hour and ten minutes is 58 minutes. I have listened (ON AVERAGES) to 58 minutes of pocasts a day, for the last 420 days! Today I caught up... I regret nothing...

On the topic of disabling YouTube comments, I'd like to point to Totalbiscuit's video from last year in November. Still proves to be relevant and, though having comments are good for community, remember that circumstances are never the same, and not every channel will work the same way.

On Destiny, you must understand that people talking about the game's flaws, while still playing the game consistently, has to do with the good (or not) ol' MMO grind. Destiny is an MMO, whether Bungie said so or not, and the addiction that is typical of progression based grinding games is very apparent. Just because you play a game for a long time, doesn't mean that A. The game is good, or B. That they actually like it. As for reviewers, you cannot expect professional reviews for MMO's to be based off 1 hour play times. They play the game to find flaws and REVIEW, therefore, they will play the game for many hours.

It wasn't that the internet created the hate, its that peoples voices are more easily heard on the internet. Also people tend to be assholes when they are anonymous.

The best part about the internet is that everyone has a voice.

Actually the mirror would reflect light back to you from when it was placed by 3 years in the past. If you get rid of the idea you'd need to be moving at faster than light speeds in order to place the mirror, which isnt actually possible unless light passes through a different medium, but just say had the mirror appear at that exact spot the mirror would effectively reflect back whatever light was there at that immediate point. So theoretically if the mirror just appeared there then you would actually see three years into the past. This is because light from Earth at the moment when the mirror appeared would still require one year of travel there and then one year of time to travel back. Whereas the light that was already there is a year old itself and therefore is even older than the light that would reach it at the time of the mirrors appearance. So basically a scientist who looked at the mirror exactly one year after its placement would see 3 years into the past.

For the mirror conversation, if somehow the mirror was there, you wouldn't be looking at the Earth a year ago, you'd be looking at what ever the mirror was pointed at a year ago (most likely random space). The only way to see the Earth's past is to pass by the mirror perfectly centered, then pass it in the same exact place a second time. Which I don't think can ever happen except maybe the sun which would be hard to stare at...

Burnie is right about George Lucas' complaints. Because of the internet, it's now alot easier for opinions, especially negative ones, to be shared and repeated on a scale that wasn't possible in the past. And that's not including the anonymity that sometimes comes when sharing the more scathing and inflammatory opinions on the internet.

Burnie also enjoys an exceptional amount of universal love from the internet as of now. Google searches for "Burnie Burns sucks" or "I hate Burnie Burns" literally yield nothing (replace Burnie Burns with Greg Miller in the same two Google searches for a control experiment). He might think differently about this "backing away from audiences" thing if that ever changes (fingers crossed it doesn't, because nobody needs an army of anonymous haters in their life).

  • Firestar1992 Pandora

George R. R. Martin actually has a mini-me author in Christopher Paolini. The Inheritance cycle is like a kids version of the Song of Ice and Fire series. Inheritance was meant to be a trilogy, and the books expanded to the point that he made a fourth book, and had longer and longer gaps between publishing dates.
I'm not a Pewdiepie fan, but I'm just going to throw out that he created a website for his fans, so supposedly he is still interacting with them, just not on YouTube. It's kind of like Achievement Hunter, because 90% of the comments on the Let's Play channel are either trolls or genuinely negative. smiley12.gif

    • RoseSpinoza

Yeah, I found it ironic that Burnie seems to have no knowledge about how toxic the Achievement Hunter/Let's Play (and sometimes RT) Youtube comment community has become. It's .... quite the thing.

Of course, because of how bad it's become, I've started coming to this site proper more often. So, maybe it's just as planned? Haha.

The mirror WON'T SHOW UP UNTIL AFTER A YEAR.

A photon takes a year to hit the mirror, and then it takes a year for the photon you hit your eyeballs.

But keeping a mirror in a viewable, useful range at 1 light-year is virtually impossible.
