Just wanted to add a few thoughts to the "drone" discussion. Building and flying RC aircraft has been my main hobby for the past 8 years. I agree that the safety guidelines are poorly defined by the FAA, but please look at the AMA guidelines. The AMA is the community based organization that the FAA referred to, and has been around for 60 years and offer insurance to model aviators. Also, drones may not have come as far Gus expected, but RC planes have. My latest model is an F-14 Tomcat with retractable landing gear, working swing wing, and twin ducted fans for less than the price of a drone. Packing this kind of tech in a model truly is the future, and it is exciting!

I would like to point out that Rapid City, SD holds the record for the most unpredictable weather in the US, and Spearfish, SD holds the record for the fastest weather change on record. The temp dropped around 40 degrees in about 3 minutes. It dropped so fast that you could hear the glass in your windows expanding.

You don't get DOWN from your car you get OUT of your car. I know in Spanish you subir (climb up) and bajar (climb down) your vehicles, but in English you don't climb ONto your car you climb INto your car; so you therefore get OUT of your car not DOWN from your car.

I know you drive a fucking Prius, so you have absolutely no reason to be getting DOWN from anything. If anything you should be getting UP from it!

Burnie must learn that Instant heaters dont need to heat that hot, only to about 44C (113F) to take a shower in. Meanwhile Kettles need to heat it to over the boiling point. Naturally, showering in that would be quite unpleasant.

In addition, These machines follow the chemical law that increased surface area = increased reaction speed. They push the water through multiple small heated pipes to heat much faster than one thick one. The system would work to heat water to a boiling point, but would take massive amounts of energy, this system is used in power plants to evaporate water near instantly so that the steam can turn turbines. Not practical on a household level though.

I know other people have commented on it, but when is this podcast going to be available on iTunes? I missed my Wednesday morning routine of podcast listening!

On a related note: would it be possible to make videos from the RT App playable when your phone is locked (like YouTube videos)? Just the audio... I sometimes listen to the vids rather than watch them. And it would solve my problem with this episode right now :)

Regarding the Podcasts app issue, I have a weird issue. If I try to download any Rooster Teeth podcast through the app (Off Topic, The Patch, and now - annoyingly - the main podcast), instead of downloading the correct file, it will instead pull down a random old Drunk Tank episode - usually from the first 75 or so.

I don't know whether it has something to do with me still having all of those old episodes on my iPod, but it's super annoying, particularly when I'm trying to download something away from home and don't have access to my computer.

    • BlackBrane

Same here. I can slightly remedy it by deleting the RT podcast, unsubscribing, and searching and re-downloading the newest episode. This works sometimes. BUT, even when this does work, if I fully close the Podcast app, when I open it back up later, the random old RT episode is queued up, and the new episode is nowhere to be found. Incredibly frustrating and confusing, mostly because I know RT is not at fault for it, and I don't know if there's anything I can do to fix it besides wait.

I've actually discovered that the following procedure generally works (if I don't have access to iTunes - syncing there usually works):

      - On the incorrect version of the new episode (eg. an episode of The Patch that is playing an old Drunk Tank), select "delete download"

      - Start streaming (not downloading) the episode (for whatever reason, streaming always works for me)

      - While the episode is streaming, hit the cloud icon to download it

      - This usually downloads the correct file. You might need to mess about with pausing and/or playing something else to get Podcasts to recognise that it has the whole file downloaded.

SpaseX is a huge deal because we have never recovered the first stage liquid engine of a large scale rocket (at least fully in tact and still working). sure this means we can reuse the first stage and the control systems worked properly and blah blah blah, but the impotent part is we can now completely disassemble the first stage after a flight and preform a ware and tare analyses. this may show that that the fuel tank didn't have quite as much stress on it as predicted and maybe 1um can be shaved off from the walls, a bolt can shrink, etc. in short there is a lot we can learn by studying the first stage after launch.

why do we care: well we can make "Space Travel" more reliable, Safer and cheaper. A colony on mars also seems a bit more possible. Hell, if SpaceX can shave enough mass they may even let you bring a potato.

As someone that worked at Peapod (slavetown) for Stop and Shop you can immediately assume any produce you've ordered hit the ground at some point and if it didn't make it to your order it was sent downstairs in attempt to play some poor fool and if it doesn't make it that far it's back upstairs to try again tomorrow. DO NOT GET PRODUCE FROM DELIVERY SERVICES.

Just a PSA from this guy.

So I started googling instant boiling water kettles and came across this gem:

"They’re not suitable for boiling large quantities of water, or for making lots of cups of tea in a row. If your lifestyle involves those scenarios, head to our kettles review to find an energy efficient Best Buy kettle instead."

never mind the awkward phrasing, but if you are making a lot of cups of tea would you not just make a pot?

This is like how you guys still use signatures when using your credit cards. Weirdly inefficient and antiquated for a country that seems to have everything else first.

    • Scriblerias

I don't feel like we, as a nation, "have everything else first." I mean, yeah, in some industries we manage to pioneer and lead the world, but I'd say for the most part America is super locked into tradition in a lot of different ways.

Anyway, totally heard of an electric kettle, but it's not a product that would be useful to me. I don't drink tea, and if I need to heat up water I'm using it to cook, so I need to do it on the stovetop regardless.

My favorite part of the chip cards in the US is that we just started getting them issues nationwide and no one from the banks to the stores know how they actually function so 3 of 5 times I use mine I'm made to enter my pin number AND sign the receipt. Visiting the EU last summer and seeing how it was really done just makes me laugh every time I go through the process now.

    • ktgcake FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

See i've never even heard of someone microwaving water. That seems really weird to me. And the "you guys have everything first" was mostly about more mainstream things like iphones, amazon prime, uber, netflix, instacart and drones that they talk about on the podcast. You guys are a lot more advanced with stuff like that.

@Gafgarian In Australia no one uses pin anymore and signature hasn't been used for maybe ten years. We have a thing called PayPass that means you just hold your card against the hand held pin machine for 2 seconds and it reads your chip and thats it. No pin number or swiping or inserting your card unless your at an ATM or somewhere with really old machines.

Russian revolution was 1917, Tsarist Russia entered the war, and one of the promises of the revolution was ending Russian involvement in the war. Finland was a grand duchy of Russia, which they conquered from Sweden in 1806 or something.
