RWBY: Volume 4, Chapter 7: Punished

It's been several months since the Fall of Beacon, and the world of Remnant is still recovering. Tensions are high, lives have been lost, and the members of Team RWBY... are divided. Each of our heroines now faces a journey of their own. While some must search inward if they ever hope to move on, others will venture out into the world in search of answers. Alongside the remaining members of Team JNPR, Ruby Rose has begun the long trek to the kingdom of Mistral, but the road ahead is full of surprises. New friends and enemies await, while the threat of an even larger catastrophe draws near.

I don't know if you guys notice in the minute 13:59 his aura gets drained the electricity look fadded, but in the minute 14:02 the electricity looked more brighten, I think during a battle the hunstman's aura gets drained but they are trained to restored to full charge.

Okay, so I've now watched the second half of this episode 25 or 30 times (literal not hyperbole) because I am completely obsessed with Qrow, every gorgeous moment in Qrow vs Tyrian, and especially "Bad Luck Charm". But let me talk about Weiss again for a moment. How awesome is she in this episode? Her storyline this volume has been a bit hit-miss for me, but I am seriously in love with her female-empowerment awesomeness in this episode. Am I being too dramatic if I call her a role model? When she's hurt, she doesn't hold it in, she doesn't bury her hurt and pretend to be fine - she let's herself cry. Sometimes you just need to cry.  But then, she stops crying.  She stops crying, gets up, and fights back. It's perfect. I won't be so presumptuous as to tell every woman to be like Weiss, but WWWSD is something I'll be keeping in mind. Get hurt, cry, stop crying, get up, and KICK BUTT!

If you take a close look at the text layout of the book Oscar is reading,.. It seems familiar somehow. Classic poetry book? (Gawd, that layout looks familiar.)

And of course, that BEAUTIFUL fight,.. when Nora centers herself in front of Tyrian, after his 'dirty-word', I was just BEGGING for him to come at her. No(ra) means No(ra)!!!

Holy shit! I always wondered about whether or not two people's Aura's or souls could combine. I even had this whole scenario about it which I will share:

In this world people manifest their Aura's to defend themselves and use power right? So if someone was sharing their Aura with another, say twins connected by soul since one or the other died during childbirth, then would they be able to manifest the soul of the other?

If they share aura's and by extension souls, could you theoretically pull a Shadow of Mordor and have them enter the field of combat?

Hey mate, Weiss is "nice but can also be a little bit bitchy". Can you really blame her for being that way considering what Monty himself has said about her character and how everything has been decided for her in her life, and because of it, she is a bit of a rebel.

Ultimately, she is one of the characters that you learn to love the more you know about her.

So I hate to be this guy but I gotta say it. With the trailer I was really worried the crew wouldn't be able to do monty-esque action sequences, I felt like it was this shows greatest strength and was just worried that it would be lost. But this episode just blew apart that worry, it's not the same but you can see the parts where it's similar and all the cool original style they added in too. I guess what i'm trying to say is, you're doing great, and I was wrong to be worried

Ok, besides Crow popping Tyrion in the nose, I'd say the part I liked the most was Ruby cutting off his tail... wasn't really expecting that of Ruby, and that's what made it so amazing.

And I'm in agreement with many others apparently, kept hoping Weiss would bitch slap daddy dearest and her little snot of a brother. Got a little irritated at how passive she was about the whole thing... I mean, isn't she an adult? 17 at least, and she's old enough to risk her life in combat but is still susceptible to grounding? I call BS, no way that'd hold up with the police. Well, any police Papa Schnee doesn't have in his pocket. Looking forward to seeing how Weiss gets out.

    Lyrics for Qrow+Ruby  vs Tyrian

    Pain
Is your reward for being near me
    Fate
Won't be your friend when i'm around
    Fade
    Before the tragedy that follows
    Flee
    The situations I surround

    I'm a hole in light
    I cannot lie
I will change the Color of your life
I don't mean to bring you pain
But I will, just wait, I can explain

    I am no one's blessing
    I'll just bring you harm
    I'm a cursed black cat
    I'm an albatross
    I'm a mirror broken
    Accept your fate
    I'm your bad luck charm

On second thought, there are a few lines that may be wrong here, it's a little too hard to hear clearly.

      There's some disagreement

I'm a hole in light - I'm a harbinger , both work, and i'm beginning to believe the latter

Some people say Accept your fate is supposed to be Save yourself, but i just cant make myself hear it...

Awesome!  New favorite RWBY song!  Your lyrics look a lot more accurate than ones I've seen on other sites, so thank you for that :-)  I agree with your edit though, it's almost definitely "harbinger".  I think it might also be "I shall bring you harm", but that's the part it's quietest, so it's hard to say. As for the 2nd to last line... "Accept your fate", "Save yourself", "Save your fate", "Safe to say", I listen over and over and I can't get it.  For that one we might just have to wait for Jeff to tell us or for the clearer soundtrack version to be released (quickly please please please!)

      I'm hearing Fade as Pray...

And the "hole in light" line, I'm also hearing that as "I'm a harbinger" (very certain)

with the second part being "that you might die" (not as certain)

Oh and I'm almost certain colour is karma.

      Pain
Is your reward for being near me
      Fate
Won't be your friend when I'm around
      Blame
Me for the tragedies that follow
      Grave
      The situations that surround
      I'm a Harbinger
      I cannot lie
I will change the color of your life
I don't mean to bring you pain
But I will; just why I can't explain
      I am no one's blessing
      I'll just bring you harm
      I'm a cursed black cat
      I'm an albatross
      I'm a mirror broken
      Sad to say

alright, this is probably just me being hopeful at this point but if you notice the eye change with Tyrian (and assume it means he's switching from paralytic venom to lethal venom in his tail) his eyes are purple when he tries to sting Ruby and yellow when he's attempting to sting Qrow. One might assume that purple eyes means paralytic venom, and yellow eyes means lethal (because Salem wanted Ruby alive). When he finally grazed Qrow, his eyes were still purple and his tail was at an angle like he was trying to sting Ruby by going under Qrow's arm. Hopefully this means that the venom will simply put Qrow down but not kill him. However, Tyrian's look when he manages to get Qrow makes me worry because he had the smirk of a man who knows he won, which of course goes back to maybe he was smirking because he was about to sting Ruby as well. But again, I'm probably just being hopeful because after last season it seems they just decided to go Game of Thrones on us and kill every character we love.

ok, i'm fuming at wises dad and brother not that i didn't kind of expect something shiny from them. but as much hurt as wises has had, we had our confrontation with daddy, and his essentially penultimate betrayal, and we cried and now were practicing. i'm sure she will be gone from the house in no time, maybe someday she will rest the company back. for now not being heirs actually free her, to do what she wants. but dam i new i hated him, i hate him i hate him i hate him. to borrow a Nora saying "break his legs" or maybe his arms, so he stoped ing them to grab people and hit his women, i bet he hits his wife to. also, cool fight, ruby got in some good moves working with her unclad that fine shot citing off his tale, after he wounded Qrow. i really hope Qrow is ok, poison is a bitch, and they are in the middle of no where. i wonder why he also went down with the roof it seamed on purpose but they both left it with out aura so dangerous move. i hope he turns out to be ok, and now ruby will no the maidens are real. maybe we'll even learn something new, when ruby learns. also Oscar and Jaune sound very similar. also just had a thought no one outside of Becon new Blake was a faunus, so if Weiss' dad found that out he'd be probly even more disgusted with his daugther for consorting with those animals.

Someone kindly correct me if i'm wrong. KINDLY. But isn't Qrow a better fighter with a scythe? From what i remember the fan wiki and just random episodes or other sources pointed at him being mainly a scythe wielder (yes i know the sword is the scythe, but if you're better with that kind of weapon, use it? ), hence the dramatic gear turns when he first fights winter or saves ironwood from the grimm. In such an important fight, would it not be better to use your signature weapon? Or is it that the fighting style of a scythe was less suited to combat Tyrian? Also, yes i agree with the other comments, someone needs to take a bat or some other weapon to Weiss' dads knees, he's just an absolute twat.

GOOD GOD I could watch that fight for hours on end. You guys have me hooked. Just please don't dawdle when it comes to stuff going down. Weiss needs to be escaping next time we see her. In the meantime, hoping for some yang action tomorrow. Tho with her going this long without an appearance I'm wondering if they'll just skip the training and cut to yang meeting up with the team in the middle of some battle or something. Which would be kinda cool, as long as they have her talk about it thru flashback or something.

Alright, I'm probably going to catch flack for saying it, but...

Ruby herself doesn't seem to be very interesting this season. I mean...how is she doing, after the loss of Penny, or Pyrrha? Does she regret (possibly) sending someone to their death (Neo) during the BoB? Does she ever think about how her family or divided friends are doing? V1-V3 was pretty awesome at having this character emote, take time to learn from her mistakes, debate herself, and build a believable rapport with the people around her; but so far, we're 7 or 8 episodes in and all we've gotten from her is a robotic anime-smile while she be's a badass and an (oddly-delivered) "this is my fight, tooooo~". We haven't seen her really work off of her new team and deal with its new dynamic (2 leaders, what everyone's relationship is to each other, etc.), or grow as a character since the start. She's just kind of...there.

And I get it, there's a TON of exposition and explaining to do to get the story rolling, but even that seems like it's really over-shadowing the heart of RWBY - which to me, has always been the relationships between the characters, not the lore-dump. (Said lore-dump could use a more even-spread, instead of all at once like this, because honestly, it's getting a little hard to follow lately. lol) I hope we get to see more of Ruby in the following episodes; she's always had a very unique and likeable personality, and I was more excited at wanting to see THAT develop than anything else. :)

Love you RT, and Happy New Year! :D

I agree with the whole Ruby's emotions.  I mean her own sister got her arm chopped off but maybe she's using that as incentive to keep pushing on?

I know we're into 7-8 episodes but they're giving the characters a back story to understand a little about the characters ie we know weiss doesn't get on with her Dad but now we know why she doesn't get on.  And don't get me started about Wittley, chip of the old block playing weiss as he did (like how daddy come into the power by using his head and business tenacity) It does make me think 2 things what about "mother" and we've seen twice now Weise using her semblance, a semblance inherited by the "Schnee" bloodline and as that comes from their moms side what's not to say Weiss goes on an all out offensive to escape?  She already has the backing of Ironwood who controls the military and since she's no longer the heiress what's she got to lose? (going off on a tangent a bit there) but yeah I still think there's still a lot to be explained perhaps RT could have put some background on some of the characters in previous seasons but there was no real need to do so.

Just a little devil's advocate here. Ruby has never, in my book been the most interesting character in the show. I'm with you on the interesting thing being the relationships between the characters and character development as a whole, but Ruby has kind of been a bit one-dimensional. I don't recall the quote exactly but Yang remarked on her always knowing what she wanted to be, what she wanted to do with her life, and why. She's a driven young woman who's not that hard to figure out. She also seems the type to just bury hardship and keep on plugging on without thinking through too much. Remember the convo RNJR had last episode about how Ruby didn't really know how long this voyage was supposed to take? I personally think we're seeing Ruby deal with the fall of Beacon about as much as she ever will, not much.

    • shadowmoonwolf

Honestly, I'm thinking Ruby's seeming nonchalance might be more worrisome than Jaune's open distraught. Think about it... Ruby's a happy, bubbly person, despite losing her mother at a young age. She might've been very little, but her wardrobe and visits to her mother's grave show she still shares a connection with her lost mother. And yet, Ruby is happy, bubbly, and silly. She also started off as incredibly naive. She started on the huntresses' path without ever dreaming she'd be fighting anything other than monsters.

The best comparison I have is Steven Universe. Steven is much like Ruby - happy, silly, optimistic, and he sees the best in everyone. The show introduced some very dark material lately and at first, he seemed very much unphased by it, much like Ruby. He was still the same smiley, happy kid at the start of each new episode. Until Mindful Education aired. Without spoiling too much, it suddenly became apparent that he'd been internalizing all the bad stuff that had happened and it was beginning to overwhelm him.

My point is that Ruby's nonchalance may in fact be a facade. Her former innocence and naivety may have put her in a position that she doesn't know quite how to cope. Even worse, Ruby doesn't have the luxury of a cooldown between major events like Steven does - she's the semi-leader of a group of young, inexperienced hunters traversing a dangerous terrain inhabited by monsters. Breaking down and letting herself feel can put her group at risk, especially since she's seen how much Jaune is suffering. She also doesn't have the level of protection Steven has, being surrounded by seasoned fighters, one of which can see glimpses of the future. In her case, feelings are dangerous.

So the question is - if Ruby is internalizing her pain and remorse, how long can she keep doing it? What happens when she finally can't keep up the facade anymore?

Why did I get an alert of this saying "Episode 7 Redux?"

I've been wondering the same thing, even the URL changed. Maybe there was something wrong with the visuals in the episode that they wanted to fix and re uploaded the new footage hoping no one would notice.

Okay...I'm very confused. If Weiss isn't the heir anymore, then what does anyone gain by holding her hostage?? Jacques has tried this before and failed twice with both her and Winter. Plus, he left Myrtenaster in the room with her...does he really think he can keep her there? (That doesn't make any sense.)

Also, if both of his daughters have already said "f*** it" to the company before, how come Whitley wasn't made the heir at the start?

And why is Weiss upset by this? She's technically free to do what she wants, and still holds influence in high society, regardless of being the heiress (plus, has Ironwood's support, and the respect of many others as well).

Sorry, it's just a lot of information at once and trying to process it all. That fight was pretty dope, tho.

I think the reason Weiss was so devastated by losing the title of heiress was because her main goal in life was to return her family's name and her family's company to it's former glory, and now she doesn't get to do that. She hates what her father is doing with the company, and now she can't do anything about it.

But that's the thing: Winter seems to be doing just fine where she is, as a military Officer/Huntress. Weiss is also loved and respected among her peers as a Huntress. We've never seen her DO anything as an Heiress, not even in her free time or mentioned in passing. She doesn't work the social circles, discuss or mention financial ambitions and/or competition, hold conference calls with anyone, actively attempt to resolve human-faunus relations, or do anything that would indicate that she's a future businesswoman AND heir of their global financial empire.

Everyone already knows she's awesome as a fighter - which is fine - but the peoples' problems lie in the ethically-lacking, morally-gray business ventures of said company. I've always been curious since V1 where she implied that she would be taking on both careers at the same time, exactly how she planned to fix things as a Huntress. And so far this volume, it's being played more like she's just a Princess trapped in a castle by her evil Keeper, and spends her days wistfully wandering the halls with confusingly, nothing to do. (Is it a wonder, then, that Whitley took over? It could be implied that we've never seen him until now because he's actually the only one trying to get things done xD)

And to be fair, it's not like paperwork is 'exciting' by any means (I'm NOT asking to watch these characters file their taxes, lmao), but it would be helpful to show Weiss actually working. More 'show' than 'tell', you know?

I've complained a few times about Tyrian's apparent extra senses (holding most issue with the bullet blocking), but my brother stumbled on an idea that explains it while integrating the "poor vision" and "using sound to see" conclusion (which of course wouldn't help block super-sonic bullets). Perhaps what he has is like a "vision/sensing" take on Pyrrha's metal-kinesis, a sort of "metal-vison."
