Volume 4, Chapter 12: No Safe Haven

RWBY: Volume 4, Chapter 12: No Safe Haven

It's been several months since the Fall of Beacon, and the world of Remnant is still recovering. Tensions are high, lives have been lost, and the members of Team RWBY... are divided. Each of our heroines now faces a journey of their own. While some must search inward if they ever hope to move on, others will venture out into the world in search of answers. Alongside the remaining members of Team JNPR, Ruby Rose has begun the long trek to the kingdom of Mistral, but the road ahead is full of surprises. New friends and enemies await, while the threat of an even larger catastrophe draws near.

I got crap for saying this before but I may have just used poor wording so i'll try again: What if Yang isn't going for either Ruby or Raven, but instead Blake? Before you jump down my throat, I've got backup. First, The ship Yang got off was the same ship that took blake home. Could be a coincidence, but it still seems weird that CRWBY would put that in randomly, and even weirder if the ship made such a strange course adjustment, going from beacon to Menagerie to patch to Atlas? and it did kinda look like they were landing in Menagerie to me. Second, the lack of detail as to where Yang's going. Even though asked outright, we never got a reply. Why is that? You could argue the CRWBY is trying to build hype and speculation, but I doubt she's going for Raven cuz a) pretty hard to find and b) She would definitely put her sister and team before her mom, she even gave a big speech about the search not "consuming" her. "But what about Ruby!" I hear you say. Both Tai and Yang seem to be confident that she can take care of herself, perhaps even aware that qrow is watching her. Even though Ruby is the more likely target, I still find blake to be an in-character possibility. Plus, all the bmblb stuff and hints that have been hinted at from day 1 (Don't attack my ship, because that isn't the only reason I have this in my head.) Even this volume where we got tons of eclipse couldn't keep the bee out, with a lot of hints by blake's actions and even a friggin song.

Overall, not the most likely possibility, but a probable one.

i don't think so, because yang arrives at a sign post that has mistral on one sign, and bandits on the other.

    • Tporter

.....Which is where Blake is going. Her search for Blake would take her to mistral.

At this point I think all roads (or flight lanes?) lead to Mistral. Ruby is already there with Nora, Jaune, and Ren. It is known (at least to us) that Salem is targeting Haven Academy next; so we can infer that Adam is likely to be there along with a large number of White Fang. Winter is also likely to be there since Weiss is seeking her out, and appears to be getting out of Atlas while she can; which suggests that Winter is also not in Atlas (probably on some secret duty from Ironwood).

Blake is in Menagerie. And Yang doesn't know that. So no.. She isn't going after Blake... Apparantly it is Raven... Though the song and her ending suggests that it's Ruby. So that's really confusing

Actually, I think Ruby is the winter maiden, as odd as that may be to say. it is said that the silver eyes is a special trait, but I doubt silver eyes also gives you the same looking powers as one of the season maidens.

We've seen Autumn's fiery eyes, and in the few moments before Ruby blew up the tower her eyes do the same thing only white. Or arguably Silver, I won't deny that Silver eyes might hint at something else perhaps related to Magic and Maidens.

That's my best guess right now and as cool as it would be for the "Silver Eyes" to be something similar to or even greater than the power of the Maidens, I think it's a safe bet to say Ruby is the Winter Maiden.

Although now that I think about it I kind of prefer the concept of the Silver eyes having some powers itself. That would be awesome.

So guys I think the most important thing this season is why only Spring is important in Qrow and Raven's conversation? Why without only her will they all die? We know Cinder is now Fall however the Summer and Winter Maidens are unnaccounted for. Summer could have been Summer Rose but she's supposedly dead... So does Salem already have the new one? Or is Summer not really dead but trapped somehow? Also with regards to Winter I have no idea why they would name Weiss' sister Winter without having her eventually become that maiden... Which begs the question is her very absent and mysterious "alcoholic" mother winter now? Is this known by Salem or did Salem take her power personally. Salem looks very much like the winter maiden and could possibly even be one and the same with Weiss' and Winter's mother hence why they have kept her a mystery when the father is not... Other maiden candidates are likely Glynda as in RWBY episode she displays powers very close to Amber's that border on magic. And she can't have that plus the little fixer upper powers she always uses... Also why not use her for the Fall maiden as a very power adult woman already devoted to the cause rather than Pyrhha unless she already is a maiden?

    • WolfWhiteFire

Main reason I can think of, normally the power choose a young maiden, and only a young maiden. An adult woman doesn't fit that description, and with how precarious the situation already was, I can see why they would want to keep as close to what the power is used to as possible, to minimize the possibility of it rejecting the new host and going back to the rest of it. Also, I think that unless Winter is already a maiden, the chances of her becoming one are low, since personally I feel she is past "young maiden" status.

to be honest i love the design of Ozpins cane, as someone who fences it just appeals to me so much and for some reason seeing Oscar (or as some of us say OZcar) hold it at the end reminded me of when i first discovered fencing and how much i liked it (cant relate to Weiss because i'm not exactly brimming with cash lol). this comment is really just me talking to myself but i feel some people could relate this to other characters also. for example boxers can probably relate to Yang to some degree, and ninjas can relate to Blake id guess (wouldn't know, they never say anything)

The release dates for the video & soundtrack for Volume 3 were the same day. If Vol 4 follows suit, a number of websites have the Vol 4 DVD/ BluRay listed as June 6, 2017.

Having said that, Volumes 1 and 2 videos and soundtracks had distance between them, with the BluRay/DVD being released before the soundtrack a few weeks apart.

Also, heard somewhere that Jeff was recovering from injury, which was also delaying soundtrack production. (But I don't even know where I heard/ read that or how true it is.

Here's hope we get to hear it as soon as next week!

Mean while in Dark Souls 3 a message in front of the player on ground says, "Isn't that cuuute....they think RWBY cast have now put in their most creepiest grimm ever."

  • Elaps

So, it's been a while since I've had information on up and coming RWBY development. That's ok, i'm pretty patient. But, with that said, I've been thinking for a while about what I want to see in the future of RWBY. This isn't necessarily season 5 stuff, because I truly think that some of it is too soon for that.

    1. I want somebody on Salem's side to steal Ironwood's research on aura, especially pertaining to the interactions with Penny and Amber/Pyrrha. Giving things that normally don't have aura aura, moving aura around, and I want Salem to eventually create a Grimm, or group of Grimm, that have aura, stolen from innocent people.

    2. I want to see Yang practice her semblance more. I know what it does, I know she's experienced with it, but I feel like she doesn't HAVE to be angry to use it. Weiss was able to summon more effectively when angry, and I feel like Yang just hasn't gotten past that anger barrier. I want to see her use her semblance while remaining calm and collected. There's absolutely no reason that I can fathom why she wouldn't use her semblance if she doesn't have to be angry, since her semblance, from what I understand, is merely a buff to her self, making her stronger and faster, and if she remains calm while under this state, she would be so much more effective, and I want to see it. Eventually. I hope she's going to see her mother.

    3. More RWBY. As I said, it's been a while since I've seen any new RWBY, and I kind of miss being addicted to it. That's about it... These are all I can think of that I haven't seen somebody else mention yet. Either way, lots of love.

-A Random Person on the Internet

    • Alforbia

Just to clarify, Yang's semblance isn't just a straight buff. Its about absorbing damage with her aura and being able to add that force to her own attacks. So, while I don't think she'd need to be angry to use it, she does need to take serious hits to use it effectively.

Though, I'd say that her fight with Mercury was actually one she didn't need to get angry about. She took a serious combo smash from him, then activated her semblance tactically to turn that against him. She didn't seem particularly seem mad at Mercury at that point, and she didn't seem mad afterwards either.

The rest of your points, though, spot on. :)

I must say this show has come so far in the past few seasons its incredible...so much dedication and time put in to such a well put and thought out story... but there comes a time were you pass a bump in the road with every good show... and you can bet your ass this is it...

First of all the the build up for season 5 was very good and im very excited for the next season,  but this season was way to much... just unnecessary dialogue and bullshit scripts to make a quick buck off the fans for no fucking reason... get your shit show together rooster teeth because this season was dick... You people are so lucky that most people love this show and i can bet good money if season 3 wasn't a HIT... this show would flop so fucking fast you'd have no idea... Not to mention the story is flawed already with the shit writers you have to begin with... Not explaining ANYTHING about the in depth story about the maidens or Oz Pin... to bad Monty wasn't still alive or he'd probably fall into another coma just from watching this shit season... But to wrap this shit of a show up, season 5 better be a BANGER or CREWBY is gonna get fucked up by the community, not that it hasn't already...But i digress, Have a nice day :)

wtf med127, i loved vol 4, it was suspenseful in light of the deaths of vol 3, they helped with world building outside of w.o.r, they made 3 awesome new grim, gave us an epic backstory, improved the graphics, gave us more qrow, kept us on the edge of our seats for the whole time, and they didn't even kill anybody to do it. they really outdid themselves in my opinion, they even kept it light hearted enough that i didn't stop watching, after all, if they were as grim and dark as vol 3 i would have stopped watching and pretended that the show stopped at vol 2

There's a point in every story where characters, and the audience, need to take a step back, collect themselves, lick their wounds and recuperate. Volume four is downtime. It was full of character development, EXTREMELY well animated action scenes and exposition that made sense in the context of the universe. I loved it.

    • Darmandorf FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Lethargy Enthusiast

Seems as though the only one getting fucked up by the community is you there Mr.-68 Karma. It's obvious to see why.

I thought this volume was really quite good and showed how the fall of Beacon affected all of the characters and what they were going to do about it. It was very much character focused, which is fine. It got me to feel for the characters and their situations more so than any other volume.

The animation quality took a huge leap forward, it's looking better than ever. While the fight scenes may have lacked the same go with the flow crazy action that V1 and V2 had with it, they're still very good and rather tense. Though again, fitting with the theme of the volume, the real strength was with the emotions the characters were able to portray. In particular, the scenes with Blake were very good and her expressiveness with her ears really made it enjoyable.

You can't say how much you love the:

"... well put and thought out story"

      then a paragraph later say:

"Not to mention the story is flawed already with the shit writers you have to begin with... Not explaining ANYTHING about the in depth story about the maidens or Oz Pin".

Not only are you completely contradicting yourself, but you seem to understand nothing about storytelling. If anything, the introduction of Salems crew helped tell the story better than any other volume.

Finally, the joke about Monty was really inappropriate and rude to just about everyone who's worked on the show, including him. Though it's apparent you don't really give a shit about the show itself or anybody who worked on it. It's also apparent through any lack of an explanation of your opinion that these thoughts aren't even your own and you just saw what other people were angry about and couldn't think for yourself long enough to form your own opinion on the volume.

      But I digress...

Theory time! All the headmasters are based from "The Wizard of Oz". Ozpin = Oz duh. General Ironwood = Tin-Man. And if Lionheart is talking to that man I bet he's a bit cowardly. Has this come up yet?

    • CloudedSun

What about the Scare Qrow? Doesn't seem like he's a headmaster, but there has to be one more that we don't know about.

    • firefistsabo

Its not the idea of the headmasters, but everyone in Ozpin's Inner Circle. Qrow is the Scarecrow, as many see Qrow being rash and having no brains. And Glynda Goodwitch is, well, Glinda the Good Witch of the South. This leaves the Shade headmaster to be someone else... Also, remember, the Wizard of Oz's real name is OSCAR Diggs, and Oscar is of course, the name of the boy Oz's body is now inside. So, l suppose you could say (for both Oscar in WoO and RWBY), Oscar is the name of the real person, but it is the identity of "Oz" that everyone truly cares about.

    • Mythicsful FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

This theory is old actually, and your iteration of it has holes. The more accurate version of it is that certain characters are based on the Wizard of Oz. Ozpin and Oscar are both Oz, as Oscar was the first name of the wizard, and his full name's initials spell out "OZPINHEAD." As someone else mentioned, Glynda is based off of Glinda Goodwitch, but that also means that she is a maiden(the witches are symbolized by the maidens), and is one of the good maidens left at that. This paints a picture that we will have had two good witches alive and two wicked witches alive. With Glynda as one, and the spring maiden not being compromised yet, that means we have our two good maidens/witches. Cinder would be the wicked witch of the east, and Salem is likely the wicked witch of the west if she turns out to be a maiden. Now tin man is likely Ironwood, scarecrow is likely Qrow, the headmaster of Haven(professor Lionheart) is likely the cowardly lion, and Dorothy is none other than Ruby Rose. To give evidence of Ruby as Dorothy, we have her name (Ruby slippers) and her eyes (Silver eyes; in the original production of The Wizard of Oz, Dorothy had silver slippers instead). So there you go buddy.

wait this was the finale? WHAAAAT?!?!

  • LCwolf1287

There's something oddly calming actually about this finale, volume and the state of the series as a whole compared to the end of the last volume. Don't get me wrong, we all know that there is still lots of buried corruption, we barely know anything about Raven (Oh, and I like her; I know, everyone else hates her), unanswered questions about Oz remain, the headmaster of Haven definitely can't be trusted, Vale is still in tatters, Remnant as a whole is still horribly fragmented, none of the primary characters have ever truly reached their full potential in combat or otherwise (that we have seen, anyway; we don't know what some of the older characters have accomplished in the past), and there's still a lot we don't know about the powers and abilities of many different characters. I hope they do a World of Remnant on semblances. I'd love to see that Remnant phenomenon explained.

I found out about and became a fan of RWBY and RT right after Vol. 2 was finished so I experienced the full ride of suspense accompanied with vol. 3 and the lead up to vol. 4. In between 3 and 4, I have to say, I was way more anxious to see the next vol. than I am to see vol. 5 right now. That's not me taking a jab at the series though; I LOVE RWBY. Vol. 4 was amazing and I'm really excited about vol. 5. The difference between then and now though is that the cliffhangers after vol. 3 feel very different compared to the cliffhangers at the end of vol. 4. It's almost like the playing field has been leveled ever so slightly in favor of Ruby and her compatriots and we got to learn that Qrow is going to be alright. I was worried there. Luckily, we only have to worry about the state of his liver now

I enjoyed this finale. My favorite was the intimate JNR moment. It was great to see Weiss and Yang hitting the road, and I'm really stoked for volume 5.

On the whole volume: I really liked that we got to know Blake, Yang and Weiss better, and that they've received noticeable character development. Ren and Nora backstory was also very emotional, and wonderfully executed.

The art has been lovely, the colors and everything. The action, especially the Tyrion fight was a lot of fun. Crow is just the best. Spending a little time with Taiyang was also really neat. Salem was a commanding presence every time she appeared, and her co-conspirators are all cool and mysterious.

Since the main reason I watch this series isn't the action, but rather the characters, I didn't mind that the story slowed down in this volume.

What I really missed is seeing more of Ruby's internal struggles and emotions. Her letter in this episode is delivered excellently by Lindsay, but otherwise it feels empty because Ruby's emotions and internal struggles had almost no focus in this volume at all, so the letter is a conclusion to a journey that.I never got to see.

True, I got a few glimpses into what she might be feeling, namely in chapter 2 when she witnessed Jaune practicing with Pyrrha's video, in chapter 10 when she told Jaune that it's all her fault, and in chapter 12, when she dropped a few tears while writing the letter. And I really appreciated these moments.

But I think they weren't enough. The reason I'm so concerned about this is because I love Ruby. She and Yang are my two favorite characters. And just like with Yang, I want to see Ruby fail, struggle and lose control before she succeeds. She saw two of her friends die with her own eyes, her sister wouldn't speak to her, and her team split, so she must be hurting. I really hope there will be more focus on her internal life next volume, especially considering that she's supposed to be the main protagonist.

But to end on a high note, I still really love this show and I truly appreciate all the effort and love that the crew has put into it. Shoutout to CRWBY, you guys are awesome!

I agree with much of what you are saying, however from what I've observed of the characters, Ruby doesn't quite need the same kind of development that her teammates do when it comes to trauma.

Remember back towards the end of season 2, when Oobleck questioned every member of team RWBY except for Ruby? And Yang said it was because Ruby always knew what she wanted to be, and why. It's a recurring theme for Ruby that her primary drive is to make the world a better place.

Also worth note is her last fight with Torchwick, and him trying to tell her what the 'real world' is like. (she clearly wasn't having any of that)

In psychology we call the ability to bounce back from trauma and withstand emotional adversity 'resilience', and it is typically a trait found in people who believe in something greater than themselves. (she also bears nearly every other quality of a resilient person, but I won't get into them all here)

Not all personalities need to be hammered into some new shape by their trials. Every so often, some kid manages to figure out what being a hero is all about before she's even old enough to fight.

I would have to agree with Thaineland's post before, with who Ruby is as a character whole with the resilience.  Also, I think at this point even if Ruby is experiencing a lot of inner turmoil we are not seeing she's having to be a big anchor to the three other team mates of the person who was lost.  Even if she has struggles we're not seeing, she can't express them at the current time in this chapter.  Not to say that it won't all come to a head by the end of chapter 6 for her, as I believe we'll be spending most of 5 building the other team members of RWBY so that they can be revealed to be the strength Ruby needs in her time of deepest turmoil.

Though that's just my suspicion in all this.

So....I love this series, it is literally the reason why I signed up for a membership. Right now though, the show is starting to follow the same problem of the Kill Bill series. First couple seasons in RWBY were all action, last couple of seasons were all story with little combat that was nowhere near as intense as the first seasons. Hell, I was grievously disappointed with this grimm. It had EVERYTHING going for it. Proper build up from flashback, teaser leading to final fight, emotional weight, and even the overall design is both ingenious and fucking terrifying...then all it did was stand in one spot and flail it's arms around like a retarded monkey that didn't realize the way to open a banana was not to smash it against the first person it sees. Though I must admit...I did have a happy little squeal at the Renora ship setting sail, but overall the season did end well, if a tad bit preachy. Still excited for the next season, and even RWBY Chibi, if that is to make a return.

I do truly love this series. It's a gorgeously in  depth world and so wondrously intricate that I want to know more about not just the characters, but everything this world has to offer. If I were to give advice, it would be to maybe take 2 weeks per episode. Previous artists and animators that I've seen who've struggled to keep up with the demand had their work suffer because of it. Take the time to step back, write a damn good story, because what you have so far is a too huge pile of a jumbled mess that just needs a bit more order and time to go through properly. We had 2 characters we know as evil have only one scene where they lie and walk off all evilly. Don't really see that as a reason to get opening title scenes. The animation has made enormous strides in quality, and I know will only continue to get better, though the characters are starting to stagnate, which is in part due to trying to get so many new ones screen time all at once. I would say take 2 weeks an episode. Make each episode 20-30 minutes long, but above all, don't lose the heart of this show. I know that everyone who works on this has poured so much effort into it, that I know they can continue to make the series grow. :)

    I had an interesting thought.

Ive noticed that Raven and Adam have some very similar features.

They both wear masks that are similar to a Grimm...

And plus,Raven and Qrow mentioned being part of some sort of clan, right?

Maybe Adam is somehow connected to Raven,or knew her?

    Lemme know your thoughts please

Adam is part of the White Fang
I thought that was obviously established
Raven's mask still brings up a lot of questions, but she isn't a Faunus, so being in the white fang is a no-go

    Please hire better writers, please.

I've gone from a huge fan, to avoiding new episodes at all costs from fear it'll be as bad as the last.

I don't know how you messed up so badly, but it's here.

Saying "the new episodes are bad" without explaining why you didn't like it contributes nothing to the discussion. Just wanted to remind you.

The episodes are bad because the writers are bad. It's a vicious cycle. I could point out as many things to prove that but it's too much since it's the writing style itself that's the problem.

      Hence, get better writers.

    • Knightofbalance

And I can say they haven't messed up one bit and have the best damn writers and it

"If you claim without evidence, it can be disproven without evidence." You never mention any evidence to support your idea of the writers of RWBY being bad. If you keep dodging this question with "too many reasons to list" then I can safely assume that you're immature and you like to spread false propaganda.

You just say the writers are bad and don't give anything to back it up. You say they they messed up badly, yet don't say WHERE they messed up. You say the episodes are bad, yet they each made their point and most were better than the one the preceded them. If you think the writers are bad, yet make a poorly written and thought out comment, there's something wrong there.

So, you say the writers are bad, yet you don't even explain why? You couls at least voice your opinions with actual examples of what you found bad. Don't just say "it was bad", explain why you think they're bad and you won't end up looking like a jackass.

The danger of Seasonal Rot aside, RWBY's writers for volume 4 are in no way worse than the ones for Volume 1. Primarily because the writers of Volume 4 are the ones from Volume 1. Luna Miles (Jaune's VA) and Kerry Shawcross (Neptune's VA) have been writing this story with Monty Oum (Lie Ren's former VA) since the start and Oum left enough notes for them before his death on February 1, 2015 to continue the series in his stead. Most likely to blame for the lack of good fight scenes may be that Rooster Teeth has changed their animation gear from Maya, which they used for the first three volumes. Volume 1 is merely repeating itself in that the creators are still testing out all their new toys in the animation industry. And Volume 1's animation received a major refining during Volume 2 if a certain food fight is to be any basis.

Altogether, Volume 4 may have some to be wanting, but has done it's job in handing a second take on the current situation of the now-broken Remnant and setting-up for the high-stakes struggle for power in Volume 5, which just got premiered last week.

I absolutely love Rens avenging angel style kill on what I feel is best described as an Apocalypse or Horseman Grimm. However what really brought on the tears was the that it was Nora that was the emotional staple that was able to hold Ren back from killing himself by acting recklessly during the fight.  Seeing Nora openly express her concern and need for Ren in her life really grounds her care-free enthusiasm and adds even more depth to her character.

You guys are slipping hard core on the continuity errors. The story is great, we definitly needed some character developement, yangs could have been...less whiney...but otherwise it was all quite nice.

Thank you for keeping sun as rediculously awesome as he is (fav male character by a long shot)
Weiss has some of the best story bits, but then, im biased (fav female character by a long shot). Seeing the ivincible qrow beaten in a straight fight did a lot to set the tone for the raw strength of the enemies our heroes have to fight. would love...LOVE, some insight into exactly what the hell is going on with ozpin and why he transfered to this farm boy. Would also love to know a bit more of whats behind the silver eyes.
Oh yea, and when it comes to the new animation style, you guys get a lot of hate from a very vocal set of people. But, i speak for many many fans here when i tell you that the new style is amazing. Fights are smoother, all movement is more fluid and making huge strides for more natural movements.

All in all you guys have done extremely well this season and wed all love to see you keep it up.

i dont think the fights are as good as vol 1,2, or 3. these fights are far better, in the old fights the camera was jumpy and slightly confusing, the backgrounds were vauge and not designed much, they were mostly just shaded in places, which is fine, but still, and it seemed like it was a simple one at a time attacking pattern from the enemies with no co-operation or enviroment usage, in these fights, the enviroment was used many times (namely every single fight except cinder murduring grim) the backgrounds were beautiful, and the camera let you see the big picture, not just a small segment of the fight. the only thing i would like more of is team training with them being taught by qrow how to fight (he has a sword to train jaune, a scythe to train ruby, huge strength to train nora, and agility to train ren) overall, good job
