RWBY: Volume 4, Chapter 6: Tipping Point

It's been several months since the Fall of Beacon, and the world of Remnant is still recovering. Tensions are high, lives have been lost, and the members of Team RWBY... are divided. Each of our heroines now faces a journey of their own. While some must search inward if they ever hope to move on, others will venture out into the world in search of answers. Alongside the remaining members of Team JNPR, Ruby Rose has begun the long trek to the kingdom of Mistral, but the road ahead is full of surprises. New friends and enemies await, while the threat of an even larger catastrophe draws near.

"What the heck? Why isn't she doing all that cool stuff from the character trailer?" That's because the character trailer comes AFTER all of this. I always wondered why Ruby wasn't as good at fighting in this volume as she was in the character trailer. But if you look at the end, during her calling the rest of team RNJR you can see Jaune's new shoulder pad in his picture. So between when that happens and now, she must learn some new stuff from Qrow or something. She probably hasn't figured out how to use her semblance like in the trailer, judging by her fights this season.

The lack of consistency with the technology in this show really bugs me. Like they have tv, news channels, phone type devices, flying ships and cannons on boats but Ruby's crew has to walk for months somewhere.

Like, maybe I'm misunderstanding the tech in this world cause they said something about Atlas tech being hard to get ahold of but a holographic tv that gets a signal in the middle of the woods is in the next room.

Also, Blakes parents are surprised that she showed up? Couldn't she have messaged them somehow? And how come everyone knows Beacon has fallen but nobodies parents seem to care? Like "oh your school fell to ruins 8 months ago? Thats totally cool, we wont try to contact you or anything." The kids just kinda leave school grounds and wander around how is every parental figure chill with this???

And if Ren's parents were part of that village, how did he not know it was there? Where are his parents now? Where are anyones parents at all?!?!

Beacon was the main antenna for telecommunications. Four amateur huntsman/huntswoman would not be able to secure a flying vehicle as they are all in use for evacuations. Vehicles run on dust. dust comes from the Atlas. The world is in chaos. You must also remember that that world is much more harsher then ours. You must expect the worst when calamity happens. You aren't misunderstanding the tech merely that the means of use for it all is currently in a bind.

Ren's parents died, as confirmed in volume 3, however, I understand where you are coming from. How does the CCTV work? Is it what TV's, phones and radios work on? If it supposedly can't work after the fall of Beacon tower, how does the TV Yang watched work? How does Ruby call Ren and Nora during the trailer? I feel like that's a small hole that needs to be filled.

One thing to note is that the various nations are heavily underpopulated, when compared to modern standards. I believe one of the WoR also mentions that mechanized transport, at least over land, is very hard to come by, sheerly by value of the fact there's giant monsters patrolling the most likely routes.

Long distance communications were likely handled via the towers, which were discussed in another WoR. This means that, say, Blake's parents wouldn't be able to contact the mainland (if Menagerie even gets signal), even if they get news in the post (and it's pretty difficult to mail a letter to someone who is moving). Most likely, short range communications (in-city and perhaps in-nation) could still be handled by radio.

TL;DR - Research infrastructure and watch WoR.

So, during Weiss's song (I don't think there's been an official title, right? I've pretty much just seen it as "This Life Is Mine"), the first line is, according to the wiki (which isn't 100% accurate all the time), "I'm not your pawn." But almost everyone is hearing "pet" instead of "pawn." Which makes sense because you can distinctly hear an "ehh" sound (it's funny 'cause I saw in a YouTube comment of this video that someone heard "kid." But that doesn't make sense at all because 1: the pronunciation, 2: because this song is very clearly a very subtle passive aggressive song directed at her father disguised as charity, Weiss saying that she's not her father's kid doesn't make any sense. Because she is his biological child, hence a "kid"). And I agree, pet makes more sense than pawn, if we're talking about things (/people) being owned (and, to some extent, controlled).

But to be honest, I hear, "I'm not your pen." (I know, doesn't make sense.) The next word starts with the letter n, which may contribute what I heard. But if that's the case, then that means that what she's actually saying is "I'm not your pehh, not another thing you own." But the pehh and n of not are connected in the vocals. So, basically, what I hear is, "I'm not your pehhnnnot another thing you own." Meaning that the lyrics would actually be, based on what I heard, "I'm not your pen, not another thing you own," or they're "I'm not your pehh, not another thing you own."

(This is based on what I heard; I'm pretty sure that the actual lyrics aren't "pen" or "pehh.")

    I hear pen/pehh because I don't hear the letter t being pronounce.

Also, since it's pretty obvious to everyone watching that Weiss's song is a subtle passive aggressive technique directed at her father basically telling him to f*ck off, disguised as a charity event, I wonder if anyone in the audience is questioning the lyrics. More importantly, why did Jacques not confront Weiss about it? Maybe he didn't notice, but in my opinion, it's like verbal-social plot armor. And Whitley was clapping for her too, but that was probably just a ruse to make him still seem "supportive," and he was kind of making a smug-ass face so... yeah.

You know, I have always been a little disappointed as to how fast Aura depletes. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a human character, but I'd expect something a bit more than a hard kick to be the final straw to deplete one's Aura. I know I wouldn't be able to last even a second in such fight, and that team RNJR are hunters and huntresses who weren't able to complete their training, but still...they always get exhausted a little too fast for my liking...Just saying. Don't hate me people.

Well to be fair, given Tirion's skill difference it would make sence that he's strong enough to break her aura like that. to put it in gaming terms it would be a bit like a group of level 10s going up against a level 25+ collectively they just about hold their own but Tirion can still punch through each individual as a weak point. From a skill and experience standpoint it does make sense.

So, geography wasn't one of Ruby's subjects while at Beacon, I take it?

Really starting to feel as though being a member of the Schnee family, or to even live in Atlus, you must be pompous or rich. You'd think a society that carved its way into existance in such a harsh environment wouldn't be so focused on the doilies and caviar.

On a side note: Interesting that none of them seemed as concerned by Ironwood opening fire with a hand cannon as much as they were by Weiss' summon.

Bit-by-bit we're getting some of that overdue backstory for Ren and Nora. Was Ren of nobility then? Or affluence?

That opening clash was sick. Ren showed off some quick thinking by shooting Jean's shield to turn him so that his arm was at the right angle for a block, and the bullets even ricocheted off to hit Tyrian. And Ruby charging up Nora was brilliant. But how is Tyrian cutting through Ruby's aura? It's like Adam with Yang, but there's nothing unique looking about his weapons, other than them being what they are, if that makes sense. And is he a Scorpian-Faunus? Can't remember but that's the first one I recall that wasn't a beast-Fauns of some sort? (And did anyone catch the change in eye colour?)

Now that Qrow's there, though... mmm. Can't wait for Episode 7

I still think Qrow is Ruby's father, he probably left Ruby with Taiyang because she would be safer with him. Qrow also needed to help Ozpin with his secret recon missions and couldn't be the father that she needed. That's why he's been looking out for her both in secret and to her knowledge. He wants to keep his little girl safe, but can't risk the attachment and compromising feelings of having a family. since Taiyang raised her, he doesn't have to worry about not coming back from his assignments because he doesn't have someone who depends on him to come back at the end of the day. Ruby will have a home and a family to go back to so he doesn't have to get distracted about staying alive for her, he just has to complete the mission. This is all just a theory of course.

    • Kerisato

That's possible but if you look at some of the artwork and imagery released so far, of Summer Rose, you'll see that Ruby's hair colour and eyes were clearly derived from her mom while Yang's are clearly a mix match of Tai and Raven. I suspect it'll eventually be revealed that Qrow was interested in Summer Rose but they never got together because while Tai and Qrow were both teammates, the former was there while Qrow was off doing missions for Ozpin.

It may al be that Tai was Summer's crush throughout their time together on a team, but Qrow was always seen as weird, like his sister. And when Raven left Tai alone with a kid Summer stepped in and eventually got her man. Who knows, it may have even started as a favor to Raven. A kind of: I'll look after you family if you're really intent on leaving them.

And because Qrow was Tai's teammate, Raven's brother, and had a thing for Summer it just made sense for him to train the girls, Ruby in particular.

    • JustinGovas

I believe tai is her father. I think it has been confirmed but hey theorys are always interesting.

    • teamMAZE

I do think it'll be a lot more interesting if Ruby was actually Qrow's daughter, and it's not too far fetched if you ask me. But as of now, it's just a hope and theory. According to what has been shown Taiyang is Ruby's dad, and since we don't know of Summer's relationship with any of her teammates other than Taiyang, we can't know for sure.

    OK theory time.

I think that the headmaster or mistress of Haven will be based on the cowardly lion from the wizard of oz, seeing as Ozpin, Qrow, Glinda and Ironwood are representing Oz, the scarecrow, the good witch and the tin man respectively and Salem is representing the wicked witch of the west. The cowardly lion is the only one of the major characters (other than Dorothy who is most likely Ruby herself) not to have a character in the show. I think that the headmaster or headmistress of Haven will been a member of their society who has either abandoned them or retired to run their school, it is likely that they will be threatened or coerced by watts into betraying the others and potentially revealing the members of the society (obviously Salem already knows about Ozpin and Qrow, but she either doesn't know or doesn't care about Glinda or ironwood's involvement).

It might be interesting to see, should her scheme in mistral fail or not go entirely to her plan, her retaliate against the society on a personal level by attacking Atlas and the Schnee's more viciously and perhaps sending more assassins to murder Ruby, Yang and Taiyang to get to Qrow, as well as Raven if Salem isn't working with her or can't find her tribe.

      Ozpin - Wizard of Oz
Glenda Goodwitch - Glenda, the Good Witch (shocking I know)
      Ironwood - Tin Man
      Qrow - Scarecrow
Ruby - Mostly Little Red Riding Hood but also partly Dorothy
      Zwei - Toto

Taiyang - Cowardly Lion. He has the look, the yellow-y/brown colour scheme, and he was pretty absent for a time after Summer died, but always wanted to protect people, so he could be the Lion after he gets courage. plus it fits the closer team. I think a random person we haven't met yet being part of this weird cabal they have going on is unlikely, and we don't know much about Haven at all.

Oz and Ironwood are headmasters, but that doesn't mean the whole squad has to be. but Glenda and Qrow are both teachers (Glenda at Beacon, Qrow taught at Signal when he wasn't on missions), and so is Taiyang (Signal Academy)

So Tyrion is interested in Jaun.  What I'm interested in is a couple of things not been cleared up.  Firstly what's Jaun's semblance?  nora has her lightning thingy ruby her speed but all you hear about Jaun is in the first series when Pyra unlocks Jauns aura and says "you have a lot of it"

Secondly Jaun says to Ruby in S1 that his weapon's a hand me down.  Could it be that Jaun's family past has something to do with Salem/the grim?  I mean Ozpin must have known Jaun's level of combat skill wasn't up to scratch but he let him stop with out questioning it and even made him leader.  Also pyra clearly seen something in Jaun, which I don't think was pure attraction

    • XanderB100 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Jaune is based on Joan or Arc, a great leader who was chosen by God. Her words could inspire the hearts of man and that's what made her so great. We don't know Jaune's semblance yet because they are intentionally holding it back from us, but I'm willing to bet it's something like being able to drastically power up himself and/or his teammates in combat. We're supposed to see him as this bumbling idiot, because that's essentially what he is, though he's clearly getting better. we're also supposed to know he has great power locked inside, like Pyrrha said. it's just a matter of tapping into it. Pyrrha saw and felt his aura first hand, but I think Tyrian is just strong enough to be able to feel it by being near him. or maybe it's his time in Salem's world that's changed him. bear in mind, we also don't know Ren's semblance yet either.

Jaune says his whole family were Hunstmen, so it's likely that people know the Arc name, even if it's not well, there are some who remember. and Ozpin is clearly unconventional, so he either knew Jaune's father/grandfather and saw potential, or he too could see Jaune's latent power and knew making him leader would draw it out. this is the same man who took a child 2 years too young to join his academy and said "Welcome aboard btw you're leading a team now." simply because he saw her fight, and she has silver eyes and that may or may not mean something. also he saw Jaune on a team with Pyrrha Nikos aka the invincible girl, who was known to be an impeccable fighter, and Lie Ren, a literal ninja with skill enough to 1v1 a King Taijitu EMPTY HANDED and win. if he was going to learn anywhere, it's with those two.

but maybe Ozpin is just a sucker for the name aesthetic and that was the only way it would fit

    • Simcard Mr

I was just meaning, I'm interested in seeing where the story will go with Jaune. People seem to over look him because of the lack of military training he had before Beacon, but the more he practices the more you can see there's more than meets the eye.  Like the gusts of wind you see when he's listening to Pyrrhas training on his scroll.

You do get a glimpse of Ren when he's fighting the Taijitu of, something, (since it wasn't explained can't be sure what that was) where Ren sort of blasts the snake with some sort of blast (not from his weapon).  Since it was in Pyrrhas chat to Jaune about aura I'd be more implied to say it was that over semblance but yeah would be interesting to see Ren's too.

RWBY started out before Frozen though, and Frozen can hardly claim the monopoly on, "person can't fully control their powers yet"... Just so happens that their abilities are similar.

    • SirLucidus

I think Winter is Elsa, or perhaps the Ice Queen from the original book (The OG Ice Kween). Weiss being Snow White is probably because what is happening to her right now. She was raised mostly by her Butler (who was revealed to be the "seven" dwarves do to his multiple personalities) She recently dishonored the Schnee name (Ate the Apple), and now her father is going to keep her in her room for a LONG time, or at least till she escapes (The deep sleep - we can infer this due to her only being in her room throughout the theme song). Now, (even though this is SO cliche and Weiss is definitely an independent woman) she's gotta wait for her Prince charming (Neptune?) to free her from this mess.

Then again, this can be relating to something in her future that happens...

But Qrow is too much of a wild card and I've been exposed to enough literature to know that lovable wild card characters are not guaranteed to last.

Thats a horrible reason to hate a show.... I dont want him to die either but if he does he does. So be it.

Go Weiss! Also, anyone else curious what caused Tyrion to take an interest in Jaune?

we all know by now Jaune is hiding some crazy power that he doesn't know he has. I think Tyrian can see it

Well, we know that Jaun has an enormous aura, which was said by phyrra in season 2? And I think that Tyrian's semblance is that he can deplete one's aura, because every time he hits Ruby her aura lights up and seems to be sucked away? Maybe he gets stronger because of it?

It'd be cool if Tyrian used his ponytail in his fighting style like Jackie Chan in one of his old movies.

I like how they're actually SHOWING aura in combat now, it's a nice touch.

I feel as if the aura touch will play a bigger role. I think it was necessary for them to show it so we knew Ruby couldnt fight back, due to her aura being depleted, but i also think it may have something to do with Jaunes semblance (possible being healing) being unlocked.

Remember way back in Volume 2 when we all thought Ironwood was gonna turn out to be evil?

Yeah, I've never been so happy to be wrong.

And why would Jaune interest Tyrian? Why indeed...I first thought it was because of Jaune's eye color, because it's similar color to when Tyrian's eye color becomes when he's about to use poison.

Their eye colors are different as in Jaune's more of a indigo and Tyrian's more like violet, but it's similar. Well, that's what I thought, but now I think it's kind of a lame reason.

    • Joppe54

Short answer is that Jaune has got an enormous aura, and Tyrian's semblance probably involves depleting someone's aura. Maybe he gets stronger out of it, I don't know

I couldn't comment on it before because I lacked the time and had bad connection, but Tyrian is sure quite uh...what's the word?? Poetic? Good with language? I dunno, but he kind of reminds me of Torchwick in that sense. Heck, why are sociopaths good with words?!

Oni Yuri...huh. I don't speak Japanese, but I do know some words, and that sounds like it would mean something like...Demon Lily.....which may actually mean Tiger Lily from the context clues. Let me check google.

Yup, Oni Yuri(鬼百合) does mean Tiger Lily, which means "wealth" in the Japanese language of flowers. Fitting.

Hmm... So I was watching volume 1 with my cousin cos I'm trying to get her into the series, and I've realized how much the voice actors have changed.

Ren is obvious because he got a full VA change, it still suits him though. I'm also beyond glad he has so many lines this volume.

Ruby's voice has definitely gotten higher pitched, which is funny because... You'd think puberty would do the opposite?

Nora and Jaune are basically the same, which I love. Babe and dork must stay the same..!!

Well... I guess there hasn't been that much change as a whole.

not sure more experience leads to a higher pitched voice? I actually prefer her V1 voice more, it would fit the maturation Ruby has gone through.

Other voice changes I do find have come with lot's of experience. Weiss and Blake's in particular I feel.

Also, I feel like that's only singing-wise. I find it's actually kinda rare for females to literally get higher pitched voices as they mature, as most of my female friends, including myself, don't exactly has higher voices. They're just less squeaky, to be as least descriptive as possible whoops-

Weiss' mother still not being in the series after the fundraiser sort of raises my suspicions even more about her... If anyone is interested in my theories about the missing maidens I just started my first website and there's a theory on it if you want to check it out (yes the website needs work but see if you like the article) www.ynotwrite.com leave a comment for feedback if you want

Isn't his madness and borderline mania just manifesting in his facial and edgy looK?

Everyone who clinks glasses and speak nicely in board rooms are calmy measured where as Tyrian's physical appearance captures his manic, action-first talk-later character,

      Maybe radical& borderline unhinged even

nah. Fuck him. hate him as a character, not even a good hate for a character. If you want to look at an Insane Character done right, go look at Kill la Kills Nui Harime.
