Volume 5, Chapter 6: Known by its Song

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 6: Known by its Song

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

I just rewatched this and I still think everything between Raven and Yang has been written sloppily.

Yangfinally meeting her mum and snubbing her for Ruby should have been tense and cathartic but it just wasn't captured.

Raven didn't sound like a callous hardass, just bitter and petty and annoying.

And there are so many things Yang could have said to cut her down to size and resolve all the tension we've built up, but all we got were a few generic outbursts and some snide remarks.

Most of this volume has failed to build tension and satisfyingly release it. Moments like the reunion of RW Y have sadly been the exception. I was disappointed with v4 but upon rewatching I saw some strong poignancy and was moved by it. Rewatching v5 episodes I mostly feel nothing, and the wasted potential makes me sad and frustrated.

I've always been critical of this show but at the same time it has inspired me, sparked my imagination and made me cry for joy and beautiful sadness. I don't want that to go away. I don't want my investment to fade to nothingness before the story ends.

Please Miles, Kerry and everyone else: get your shit together!

This is a bit of a stretch.

I don't know about you, but something interested me about that one little moment at 4:44 where Qrow is looking at a list of huntsmen and huntresses. I paused to look over the names, and one of them caught my eye...

    Silver, Stark

    Ring any bells?

I mean, it's probably nothing, just a mere coincidence. It's an extremely small chance I'm actually onto something, but if I am, I'll be happy as fuck.

I'd like to point out three things:

    1. Do we REALLY think that Ozpin didn't know that Jaune faked his school records to get into Beacon?

    2. Do we really think a bow tie successfully hid the fact Blake was a Faunus from her professors and Professor Ozpin?

    3. Why would Ozpin appoint Jaune, a fake, and Ruby, a "child" as leaders of their respective teams unless he had some plan for them?

I mean Jaune has proved to have an unnatural knack for battle tatics (in season 2 they're playing a four-player conquest game and Jaune takes over for Blake and wins despite the fact he has never played the game before) and Ruby has silver eyes which makes her destined to protect others (something her uncle told her).

Also, Raven's description of how Oz treated STRQ is very similar to how he treated RWBY. Is it possible he intended to take members of both teams to form some kind of team that would serve him? After all, Oz chose Pyria to be the Fall Maiden, knowing she would no longer be part of JNPR. I suspect he planned to create a team with Jaune, Ruby, and at least two other people.

So in his spare time, Piccollo runs a Ramen shop? (Kudos if you get that reference) Moving on...

Another great example of just how bad things are, with that opening sequence featuring Qrow's search. Every huntsman and huntress is either dead or out-of-contact.

What's up with Vernal's weapon? Is that some kind of oversized, pincer-firing hand-cannon?

About Raven's speech: Kind of a letdown. She didn't tell Yang or Weiss anything other than 'Be wary' coupled with plenty of vague-for-obscurities'-sake. That tidbit about why Raven and Qrow went to Beacon, however, that was something else. In this scene, I was reminded of Volume 2, when the girls were looking for the White Fang's hideout and, in the evening, sat around the camp fire discussing Professor Oobleck's questions for them about why they wanted to be huntresses; now Raven's basically saying, 'Aww, that's cute. For a child.' Now that I think about it, her attitude reminds me of Roman Torchwick - especially in Volume 3 when he started mocking Ruby for thinking her life would be like a fairy tale; "You wanna be the hero? Then play the part and DIE like every other huntsman in history!"

Another thing that sent alarm bells off in my head; the dead coming back to  life. I hope that was merely a reference to Ozpin or something. Please, RT, PLEASE don't bring back Pyrrah in the flesh. Flashbacks I can handle. More training videos? Ok. But she needs to stay dead. This anime-esque series has been doing a lot right; the willingness to have perma-death, and apply it to named, loved characters, is a highlight. Its existence removes certainty and predictability.

Plus, as others have noticed, Pyrrahs' death forcibly gives Jeane Arc reason and drive; a place in the show. He has gone from hapless extra with cliché troubles, to someone with an vendetta. Now he's striving to better himself because he's haunted by the failure of not being good enough to save or help Pyrrah. And the feelings are all the more bitter because he was thrust aside by her; she rushed off to die, inadvertently telling Jeane  he would only get in the way (ironic, considering Ozpin's warning to her). Furthermore it brings to mind that Jeane's original resistance to Pyrrah offering to help; because he was tired of being the 'lovable idiot, stuck in a tree while his friends risked their lives.' But I digress.

How did Yang not know her mom could do that? I assumed she knew back in Volume 2 as Yang told Blake about her search for Raven, and Qrow just happened to show up and save the day. Then, out-of-the-blue, Raven said, 'What Ozpin did to Qrow and me..." Did he give them the ability to transform into birds?! If so, that catapults the theory he really IS the wizard who created the Maidens, on to more credible ground

Lastly, that meeting of Weiss, Yang and Ruby was perfect. All that's missing is Blake and RWBY will be back. I guess Ozpin/Oscar will join RNJR. So will Team ORNJ be a thing?

  • Fudgemint

All of Qrow's bit was fantastic, starting off comedic and going right into heartbreaking, but I have some issues with the rest of the in this one.

    1. Yang mentioning she's seen the raven before.

I'll be completely honest that I'm more bugged by this one than I should be. So I know it's meant to confirm that the raven we seen a couple times was indeed Raven herself, but I felt like Yang saying she's seen it before came off like...holding the viewers hand, for lack of a better term. Granted, I don't know how to do it differently aside from just removing the line all together.

    2. The skepticism with magic.

Weiss: "We have rock magic, soul magic... But, I mean, there's no such thing as magic magic."

This is something the series has a problem with in general. Before Ozpin's talk with Pyrrha back in Volume 3, we didn't know that magic wasn't considered real in their universe (it's possible something has been said in a Q&A eons ago, but nothing in the show itself that I recall,) and when the magic-like Dust and Semblances is used nearly every episode, we have no reason not to assume magic isn't real too. Even in the very first episode we had what can only be called a magic fight with Glynda and Cinder. I just tend to dislike arbitrary skepticism unless when used for comedy.

    3. The tent scene.
How to put this, Raven's lines came off...weird. I get what she was talking about, but she would talk yet not say anything. Take the Ozpin part. Raven would say "that's how he planned it" and how he "has a great and terrible secret" but doesn't actually bother to explain what Ozpin is, and this feels like it's because us viewers already know it more than part of Raven's ploy to convince Yang to stay by dangling the answers to her questions on a hook.

Yang's "That doesn't make any sense! How could he have... No. Why would someone even do that?" line bugged me, because it makes it come off to me like the "how" doesn't matter. It does. It would be one thing if Yang was told that Ozpin is really really old before this, because then her dismissing the "how" would have some reason to it (because he's super old yo.) "That doesn't make any sense! How coul-why would someone even do that?" would keep both the "how" and "why" equally important.

    4. The RWY reunion.

Nothing actually wrong with the scene itself. I just feel like this would have been better placed at the beginning of the next episode than the end of this one. Qrow being surprised at Yang feels more....ending-y.

I dunno. Maybe my opinions will change later on, but that's what I felt during the episode.

Know what bothered me when Raven was talking? She made the statement that the truth is hard to come by and that a story of victory is the story of defeat for another? Like, what's the context? What is she talking about?! I know she is trying to impose she knows the truth or something like that but, it was just odd. Raven, I love you but you need to word better.

Eh, it's only two more layers of magic than we already got. Like, we got spoopy interaction at a distance magic, and crazy fast makes time all gelatinous magic. Magic+Maths*Time=Science. Anything we don't understand seems oddly magic.

      2. Magic

So this is from my point of view, thus I could be mistaken (and I'm choosing to ignore the easy solution: RoosterTeeth and Monty weren't sure where to draw the line when this show first began, so that magic has been slowly defined instead of clearly stated) but here goes:

Dust is an Element with several properties. In the world of Remnant it could best be described as having its own spot on the Period Table of Elements, except it doesn't seem to have a consistent form. But it DOES have form. Meaning it's matter, it takes up a space and is measurable; it can be manipulated and refined, experimented on, used in construction of other things, etc.

Semblances are a bit trickier to explain since these really do seem to fall under magic. Except these can be genetic. Weiss and Winter share a common Semblance. I'm betting Tai and Yang also share a similar special ability. So there are rules to Semblance (though, as Ren explained a chapter or two ago, it can be random) and Semblances are definitely bound to the corporal world. For example transferring the Maiden's power (by redistributing her Amber's Semblance to Pyrrah) required another body, it couldn't be simply stored in a computer or something. (Conspiracy theory: Penny's true purpose was to take the Fall Maiden's power). Another sign of Semblance being bound to certain rules would be Emerald, whose power actually causes her some discomfort and strain. The hunters and huntresses don't need Dust to use their Semblance, but when used together it makes the wielders much more capable and dangerous.

Magic: By its very nature (traditionally and in Remnant) magic is boundless. It's basically a power that requires no rules, no regulations, and is as powerful as the wielder needs, or can fathom. It has no container, no true measure. That's why it so often appears in fables and other literature; it's a get-of-writer's-jam card, able to solve almost any problem. Usually More Magic has been the solution to any bind its wielder finds themselves in. Sometimes they attach words to magic, or swords, even masks, sometimes handsigns, occasionally an object like wands, but (especially in anime) these things are regularly disregarded as needed because magic is magic; to the writer it shouldn't have limits.

The magic of Remnant, of the Maiden's specifically, is basically unlimited power. It's probable Cinder intensely trained with what little Fall Maiden power she had prior to taking the rest of it. As mentioned in that Volume 3 flashback, she wanted power, she wants to be feared. Amber (the Fall Maiden) didn't have such ambitions, even with such a short clip of personality, she obviously was living a gentle life.

Sorry for the length, hope it helps.

Despite many doing nothing but complaining about the length or the lack of action, Volume 5 is so far turning out to be my favorite overall. We finally got some Ruby development, team RWBY is finally going to be together again, we got a winged fanus after all this time, the few action sequences we've gotten have shown character growth as well as how the animators are improving. Now we just need Neo and everything I hoped for this volume will have happened. (Plus, everything Nora says so far is gold.) Just think, there's still plenty left to go. The action and major plot twists everyone's waiting for can still happen.

Anyway, my point is, RWBY is not just about the fighting or the episode length. So can we just enjoy what we have?

I guess the plots really have to catch on somewhat, and I think it would be like what I presume... The huntsmen and huntresses of today die, while the new generation of them rise to fight against Salem. What is current today is being destroyed, and it means... anyone who protects you now is a target. Even if they have the sense of justice in them, all of them will never stand a chance. Only those who know the truth have the edge. The rest die, and it becomes an impossible war. Somewhere between these lines.

Through out Volume 1-3 you will see a black bird from time to time, most noticeably when Yang is looking out her window when she is lying in bed in Volume 3, Chapter 12. Again! With the feels RT! That was a great reunion, and overall, a great episode!~

While I admit at first, it didn't feel as sweet as when Yang and Weiss reunited, it definitely became real sweet and adorable as it played on~ :D Especially when Weiss joined in on the reunion hug~ (Gawww~ That was so Freaken Adorable!!!)

I love the fact that Ruby was all apologetic and fearful upon seeing Yang for the first time in months.

It really shows that even though Ruby has been through a lot, and definitely grown in many aspects, she's still a child at heart! She feared being punished by her sister for, essentially, running away from home.

RT could have gone with Ruby, just filled with bawling tears and bomb-rushes Yang with the biggest hug she could give, but that would have been an incredibly cliche moment.

I really want to emphasize the fact that she was 'fearful' of her older sister though.

You can see at 15:40 that Ruby was, at first, shocked beyond belief, but shortly after, her eyes and expression immediately filled with fear and worry; worry for what Yang has to say about her and her journey.

Even shortly after that, at 15:44, you can see that Yang's eyes become narrow and quite 'hollow', while having a rather stern-looking expression; almost like a 'calm but angry' look. Then Ruby, soon after, begins her apologies and regrets. I could name more small details about body language and such, but this post is long enough as it is xD

It's moments like these that really do shine in RWBY. The attention to detail is fantastic, which in turn, brings out the characteristics that we all love about our beloved huntresses~ :D

Nerdyderpy... about your assumption of Ruby being the Summer maiden... maybe that could have been a possible plot, but she doesn't know yet. That means her powers laid dormant then? How come Ozpin doesn't know where the Summer maiden is then? You could have a point.

WINTER Schnee, SUMMER Rose, VERNAL (don’t know last name XD

      And Cinder FALL

I think that salem took the summer maiden powers and the winter maiden powers, she did it the same way Cinder took the fall maiden powers( I think Salem gave Cinder the little grimm ). Since only the fall maiden is left, she is the most important and that's why every one is going after her and are not talking about the others.

U mean Spring maiden is the last 1 remaining right?

I have a little theory about that. I think Summer may have been the Summer maiden (I have more reasons but I won't go into it here yet) but Ruby didn't get them- I think Raven killed Summer and took the power for herself. If possibly all 4 members of team RWBY end up with the maiden powers (I also have actual reasons to believe this) I think Yang will end up with the summer power. I find it likely that she will have to fight Raven and either kill her or witness her death anyway.

I'm just waiting to see the whole team come back, maybe some of them talking to Jean about Pyrrha, Blake and Sun coming back and maybe even Neptune showing up looking more badass than usual

I don't care. As long as the clips are 30 minutes on average.

if you hover over shows it tells you things coming up on the left, which includes episode 7 in about 22 hours

elitelenny223 Will you stop with the 30 minute episode crap. You've spammed it about a million times. You do also realise that no 30 minute time slot shows are actually 30 mins? Anime is about 20 minutes, 24 with opening and ending usually, depending on length. You're not going to get 30 minute episodes ever even if they ever manage to reach the industry standard.

Eh for me they can just stay hidden because it is going to be more about team RWBY than anything else.

I can't describe how much I've missed seeing our girls together. With the reunion of Ruby, Weiss and Yang reunited I truly have hope that Blake will reunite with the others by the Volume's finale. I don't expect RWBY to have a super happy reunion with Blake return, but there is plenty of time later for Team RWBY to rebuild their sisterly bond.
