I love when hydraulic presses squish any kind of non-Newtonian fluid.  I bet it'd look rad in slow mo!

OK BUT PEOPLE ACTUALLY DO THAT AND IT'S ACTUALLY SCARY. Our structural lab is across the hallway from the undergrad society lounge with big-ass windows and if people see you working they tap on the glass to get your attention BUT THE PUMP IS REALLY LOUD SO THEY HIT IT REALLY HARD AND IT MAKES ME JUMP.

Hydraulic Press Channel got their hands on a Phantom Flex 2K, and the first thing they shot?  Crushing a deck of cards and a book (Link).  It's a pretty good video and I think it's a fine example of great minds thinking alike.

i thought it wouldve been mentioned already but i dont believe thats a hydraulic press. it seems to use the two big threaded rods to draw the press down.

    • dangerst FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold @Danger_Street

It's a Baldwin Hydraulic press, it has 2 hydraulic posts and 2 guide posts with mechanical movement I assume in case of hydraulic failure or manual feeding required. You can likewise hear the hydraulics in the video.

EDIT: @TimothyG, there is a "Baldwin Locomotives Works" logo right on the machine. actlBVm.gif

This was the logo the used when they were in the cycle of making diesel locomotives, they also had several other patents in hydraulics but because this was before 1979 the patents are not easily searchable. They shut down in 1972, this is still in a functional perspective a hydraulic press.

    • TimothyG FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Mr. Dad-Bod Canada 2016

It's actually an old-school universal testing machine. Here's what one of these old dinosaurs looks like in full. Close to a Baldwin press, but those threaded guide posts are actuated with electric motors to move the head frame up and down. We have one almost identical to it in our lab at the U of S. dangerst has it right though, you can hear the hydraulic ram in the bottom that does most of the heavy lifting.

EDIT: @dangerst sorry man, I thought you were talking about a rubber press. Just a different name for the same thing. My bad.

EDIT EDIT: to be fair, the nameplate on the 1946 Baldwin I learned on reads "Southwark State-Emery Testing Machine".

I mean... I'm no expert... so I definitely couldn't snap a selfie with the 1940's Baldwin UTM that I first performed a test on in the same lab where I'm now a TA for an undergrad course in the division of Applied Mechanics while students on the other side of the lab ran a torsion test...

"28,500 frames per second, which is over 1000 times slower than you can see" says the guy who can tell if a 60FPS game dips to 59FPS.

    • British_Knight FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Misunderstood Sarcastic

well losing a frame a second is noticeable.

a second is a long time, even if you divi it up into 30 or 60.

    • DavidtheWavid FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@British_Knight Yes but if you see 28 frames per second, you wouldn't notice if you lost a sixtieth of one. Because that's less than half of the smallest piece of time you can see. And the human eye can see around 150 frames per second. 60-1000 depending on the light and how hard you're concentrating. If humans saw at 28FPS, then 60FPS games wouldn't look any better than 30FPS games or TV shows, barely better than 24FPS movies. Or rather, Halo: The Master Chief Collection wouldn't seem to have a higher framerate than the original games even though the framerate boost is clearly visible.

    • SerPlumtree FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

He says that because he's slowing down the action by around 1000 frames not because you see at that frame rate. (If he set it to play at 60 fps then it would play at roughly 500 times slower then you can see and if he played it at 28,500 it would play back in real time.

Also you don't see in cps at all so it arbitrary to say you see at ### fps because no number will be a true representation of how you see.
