One quick story from Japan: I was a team leader and translator doing the photo cleaning project for 3 months and I had a couple come in, who had lost everything in the tsunami, looking for photos our their two daughters. They found over 600 photos from all ages of their lives. The mother, with tears in her eyes, showed me a picture of her daughter and said, “My oldest daughter was killed in the tsunami.” The room was flooded with tears as I translated to my team what the mother was saying to me.
I was so happy I was able to return these priceless pictures to this family who had lost their daughter and now they can forever keep her memory alive with the pictures they found that day. Just her and her husband’s simple bowing and whispering, ‘Thank you so much.’ will forever echo in my heart and gave me the strength everyday to keep cleaning the photos in hopes more people would find what they had lost in the tsunami. (After 3 months work we ended up returning more than 300 albums, and 1000s of individual pictures!)
