    • Hello friends! It has certainly been a while, hasn't it?

A new semester has started and that has brought along with it interesting changes. My biggest announcement is that I was accepted into a new graduate program starting this coming Fall! I will remain here in Austin, but simply take different classes, making it the easiest Big Transition of my entire life! I also found out I can get a Masters in my previous area, meaning all the classes I have taken will be twice as valuable to me, as they also transfer over to my new Phd program. It's been great getting all the positive feedback about this jump, and I am anxious for Fall to start, even if it means I will be a first year student once more.

(Casual reminder if you are a student and ever want to talk about grad school, I'm here for yooou.)

Other than that, life has been kinda slow. I've discovered the wonder that is the indoor track and started running again. My miles are slowly creeping under the 11 minute mark, which is a GREAT motivator to not let myself give it up again. True to form, I tried to run multiple days in a row and my ankles got all weird, so I decided today might be a Zumba day instead. I will say, it is kind of a bummer when I don't feel winded but still have to stop because my ankles start seizing up as I run, even if I stretch. With the conclusion of Buff Buddies, I have noticed my waist-line become a bit more concave instead of convex, which better be because I cut out bread because I miss it SO MUCH. AUGH.

I've been a bit homesick lately, mainly because my close friend went on a big trip abroad and deleted all social media. I didn't realize how vital those monthly phone calls and daily snapchats were until they were gone. His trip is going to be a couple months, so I'm not really looking forward to it. Luckily, I had a friend this weekend who welcomed the opportunity to hole-up together in a coffee shop and do work, thus saving me from sitting alone in my apartment all sad 'n' stuff. I'm also excited to be totally free during Spring Break, so I'm just saying yes to any new experience that comes my way.

This is kinda long, so I'll cut it here. I hope you have a lovely day! Here's to sunnier skies and...something else nice. I dunno.

It is very alarming how long it has been since I wrote an update journal. I will be honest and say that since I have been on break, I have run into snags NOT from my willingness and desire to work out but from weather. I came home around the 17th of December and was immediately met with over a week of straight rain, leaving me doing frustrated squats and other strength training exercises while watching the rain from my living room. I also was on a mission to see as many friends as possible, so even if a day showed signs of clearing up, I was often on the road to see a friend. Suffice to say I only succeeded in running a couple days of Week 6 paired with one day of a quaint 2ish mile hike.

BUT, I have had two victories in Week 7. I often struggle when running of tripping myself up mentally and looking at my pace, panicking, and then speeding up, only to tucker myself Mile 1 and then have a crap Mile 2. So one day I said, "ENOUGH" and refused to look. Sure enough, both my miles were at a much similar (though slow) pace of around 11:48 minutes.

Victory 2 came about when I finished running 2 miles and was walking another mile just 'cause when I started thinking, "I bet I could run another mile if I wanted to" and then I DID. 3 miles at the same pace felt pretty good until it caught up with me and I spent the rest of the day listening to a chorus of popping joints every time I moved...so I did it again the next day. Then my two days of victory were hijacked by more rain and of course, more visits to see friends.

As for my diet...if you had been separated from biscuits and your favorite home-made meals for a year and a half would you let any sort of diet stand in your way??? Yes? Well...okay. But seriously, I have my good and bad days, mostly the good being when I can have Colombian food but Mom lets me make my own plate, so my portions are not "all of the carbs." It seems the running is helping balance it all as I seem to be down 5 pounds (which then went up ten...but now is back to this down 5). Huzzah!

The New Year of course beckons hyperbolic and often unmet resolutions, so I decided to think small as far as weight-loss efforts and going carb-light. I can't (won't) ditch carbs all together but I am planning to swap sandwich bread for lettuce wraps and eliminate morning toast. My mom also reminded me that I don't find baby spinach too offensive, so I think I can throw that into my eggs in the morning and rejoice. This will also help with vitamin deficienies I am sure I have.

I only have a few more days at home, which means big meals with family before I leave them for another year. Still, it is sunny and I am anxious to go for a run, thus ending Week 7 with a win...except I forgot I'm getting Chinese food tonight so actually nevermind DANGIT okay whatever.

Did you know if you don't do any strength training for weeks that when you start again, it's incredibly painful?

You did? Oh...well...good for you. I'll just be over here, hobbling.

It was my birthday this week and I had people visit from out of town, but I got in 3 super solid workouts. Diet...we won't talk about, but I'm slowly seeing the muscles in my legs and arms stand out so I feel confident that something is going my way. I normally don't do conditioning with any weights, but I pushed myself with some 5 pounders, and I got through it all with only a mild case of jelly legs, so hooray! Sure, I had also pulled some 8lb dumbbells in case I felt confident, but we'll get there one day.

This week I head home to North Carolina where my fast food options will be limited and my opportunities to run and work out will be numerous as I have very few friends in my home town. I'm excited to just run run run and then nap nap nap.

Now to go eat copious amounts of bread and cheese because my roommate decided to be fancy. DON'T JUDGE ME.

    • Buff Buddies Week 2 and Week 3

Thanksgiving and finals are kicking my butt, and it's hard to be motivated. It's even harder when it's raining and the gym is a 20 minute walk away. I've been trying to make up for it by finding strength and conditioning workouts on Youtube so I'm at least doing something, but with finals coming up my brain is fried and taking time away from studies makes me p anxious.

Week 2, I got to the gym fourish times. I probably only got to the gym twice Week 3. Week 4 is looking a bit iffy because I have an exam Thursday and am going to Houston this weekend. I may have to focus more on doing strength training at home than the elliptical, which is fine.

My big victory for Week 3 was jumping back on the treadmill and seeing how I do at the whole jogging thing. Rather foolishly I set the treadmill to "rolling hills", but I was able to get 3 miles in my 45 minute run. I'll be going home in a few weeks with a lot of places to run, so I'm looking forward to trimming that time down a little bit. It also didn't help my pace that I'd suddenly be going up a hill and dying and have to slow down. Grr!

One question I do have for running Buff Buddies: So the treadmill sucks and I always wake up the next day with sore hips. However, regardless of where I run, I always run into the problem (nice) of the muscles in the back of my ankles feeling SO tense and making it impossible to really get a good pace going. It seems no matter how much I try to stretch or roll my ankles out before a run, I always spend the first mile awkwardly compensating until those muscles liven up. Any suggestions? Aside from "run more, ya dope."

If you're hitting snags, know I'm here for you and we can do this!

Not eating out is hard, fam.

My week one was not as successful as it could have been, but it wasn't the worst. I only worked out 3 days, but those workouts were pure cardio like I wanted. Also when I ate out, I at least tried to not go for full on hamburgers and just a small taco instead. I also only went out one night, so that was also a good (though very unhip) decision.

This week is gonna be just as difficult because I said yes to a ton of social events, so it'll be multiple days of "get done at class at 4 and then try and work out and get home to get decent looking to be somewhere at 7" which doesn't sound impossible but I have curly hair so looking nice after a workout feels pretty impossible. Still, I know I can do that 4-5 workouts a week, so that is my main goal for the next 7 days.

      Cheers,
      J

So I have been trying to get into better shape since my second semester of grad school AKA almost a year ago. Actually better is already giving me too much credit. Any semblance of shape is a shape I want. However, this semester has been really stressful, and I have been slacking. Allowing myself to eat out a little more than I should, etc, so I want to use Buff Buddies to get me back on the track I was running on when I first started working out, which was a nice track with leaves and a nice breeze and me losing inches from my thunder thighs.

      What I am doing:

      1. Going to the gym at least 2 days a week: Mostly kickboxing/zumba with the occasional strength depending on how I feel.
      2. Eating alright

What I want to be doing

      1. Going to the gym 4-5 days a week, like...for real: A little less on strength and more cardio!
        - I've been toning a bit but my weight has literally not changed despite losing inches, leading me to want to up my cardio, mainly the elliptical, in hopes of slimming down a bit.
      2. Cutting down eating out to one day a week MAX.
        - Factoring in drinking makes this difficult as some weeks I don't go out at all and others I go out multiple days. This impacts working out as well, but my sub-goal would then be to compensate on alternative days to balance everything out.
        - Also I recently talked to a nutritionist about my diet as far as what I make at home, and she seemed pretty pleased aside from a note to "eat more fiber every once in a while", so no change there.

As for a goal, I am a little uncertain. As I said my weight has not fluctuated but the 180lbs of a year ago and the 180lbs of today are very different. I think my goal is thus to lose inches and not think of it so much in terms of weight. I've always had big thighs so honestly having toned big thighs as opposed to jiggly-bigged thighs would be the best. I want to do a little research on realistic goals in this area, and I will get back to everyone!

However, I will say I did do a 30-minute tabata workout on campus today that involved a lot of cardio, so that rocks! I typically want to do more like an hour, but I had obligations today. Even just a 30-minute class is way more involved than what I would do at home, so I consider that a victory. :)

      Let's get hot together.
