Taking care of your mental health is a lot easier said than done. You can recognize something needs to change, even recognize exactly what that is and how to do it, and still struggle to address it. I've been having that internal fight for a while now and I finally have a bit of a plan for how to maybe start addressing...

      *gestures to entire being*

      ...this.

So here's that whole brain dump for ya. Take care of yourselves  purple_heart

    • I Survived RTX As An Attendee And All I Got Was 68385 Hugs

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

I've been trying to write this post for a week now but man time has become a scarce commodity. I'll tell about that in another post though. For now I'm on a treadmill and frankly I don't know when else I'll be able to do this.

This RTX was a weird one for me. It took me until Saturday afternoon to be okayish with not having anything I had to do. Until then i constantly felt like i was forgetting something; being on the floor without having a mission is something I haven't done in several years. This time I could just...exist. Which is something I have a hard time with in my regular life anyways. At some point the anxiety subsided and lemme tell you how much I love all your faces.

This year I was actually able to talk to people. No more saying hi for 8 seconds as I'm running past them. I had actual conversations. With a lot of you. Some of you for the first time in person! How crazy is that?! And hugs! We had so many hugs! Being able to reconnect with the community and friends was amazing, and I'm so happy that we were able to have those moments.

I also want to say a huge thank you to everyone who went to the animation mega panel and promptly lost their shit at the gen:LOCK things we showed. I had already seen them, but I went to the panel to see you see them. To witness a couple thousand people have that kind of reaction to a thing I get to help make is a feeling I don't think I will ever have words to describe. I cannot wait til you get to see the finished product...it's shaping up to be a thing y'all.

A second huge thank you to those who came to the Layout panel and got to see what my team does and what goes into making shows like RWBY and gen:LOCK happen. Bonus points for going to the demos they did on the floor where they showed how these shots happen in real time. I am fortunate to work with these people every day and learn from them.

And finally a third massive thanks to everyone who put community events together during the con. I didn't get to all of them (note to self: next year invest in a time turner) but I hit as many as I could. That includes panels! RTX is for the community, and you guys doing what you do is why it gets to exist. I know how much work goes into creating and maintaining the sub-communities, and I appreciate the hell out of everyone who takes on those roles.

It'll be a year until I see most of you again, but until then I'll see ya around the internets

    • Oh, The Places I'll Go (at RTX)

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

I mentioned in the last post I'll be floating around the RTX all weekend, but there are a few places I know I'll be that you should also totally be at! Not just because I'm there, though. I mean, that's a good reason, but the things are awesome and you should want to experience them anyways!

*There are lots of other awesome things happening that you should go to; this is just a list of things I'm planning on being at.

      Thursday

The Booze Cruise - I have often heard tales of this event but have never been able to attend, BUT NO MORE! This year LoLink and I are both partaking in these shenanigans and I am super excited to kick off RTX with a dedicated 3 hours of hanging with community. The event is already sold out, so if you're reading this going "whaaaa I wanna go!" I'm sorry to say you'll just have to wait until next year.

SideQuest Charity Gala (7pm-11pm, The Line) - If you have never been to SideQuest I want you to stop what you're doing right now and go get a ticket. Seriously, I'll wait. SideQuest is a series of community events that run outside of RTX, put together by an awesome crew that originated from the community all the way back in 2011. The night before RTX they host a fancy pants charity gala where you get all dressed up, mingle with community pre-convention-exhaustion, and check out a ton of cool items that are up for silent auction to benefit charities like Able Gamers, Operation Supply Drop, and Child's Play. You can still grab tickets here.

      Friday

RT Broadcast Panel (12:30pm, ACC Room 6) - I may no longer be working with them, but I did spend a year as a part of the broadcast crew so of course I have to go to the panel. Mostly just to heckle Michael but shhhh don't tell him I said that. For anyone who's ever wondered how the tech side of all your favorite broadcast shows work (and wanted to hear about all the things that have gone wrong) you're going to want to catch this.

Storyboards, Layouts, and Crowds (3pm, JW 1/2) - Part of the animation festival, this is all about my new job! We're going to show how we craft a scene from start to finish, with all the steps that happen in between to take something from storyboard concept to what you see in the episode release. We've got a couple of RWBY volume 5 scenes on deck and are excited to answer you guys' questions on how we operate. Spoilers: it involves a lot of caffeine.

Animation Mega Panel (7pm, JW 5/6) - GO TO THIS. WE'RE SHOWING A BUNCH OF COOL STUFF AND ANNOUNCING THINGS. YOU CAN SEE GEN:LOCK THINGS THAT I GOT TO SEE TODAY AND FUUUUUUCK I AM EXCITED TO BE WORKING ON THIS SHOW.

OCC Dinner (7pm-9pm, Frank) - ALSO GO TO THIS. Yeah I know it's at the same time as the mega panel, so really half of you should go to the panel and the other half should go to the dinner. Because it's going to be awesome. The Oxford Comma Cafe (more on that below) is gathering the community at Frank, which is honestly one of my favorite restaurants in downtown. Mingle with community and some of the most active current site users while chowing down on tasty foods. We have the upstairs area reserved for us, so just pop in and say you're with the OCC party! You'll be responsible for buying your own food and drinks (when you order say you're with us please so we can hit our minimum for having reserved an area), but it's a dedicated spot to get some chill community time.

      Sunday

Oxford Comma Cafe (12pm, ACC Room 8) - If you are at all active on the site and are not in the OCC forum, you are missing out. And no I'm not just saying that as one of the founders who gets the first post of almost every new page sacrificed in her name. It is the largest and most active forum here, and has achieved that status thanks to the way the core members manage the interactions there. This panel will be about fostering healthy discussion and how to maintain open conversation for the longevity of an online community. I highly recommend attending this, especially if you're the admin of a regional group. Bonus points: you can meet the panelists for this at that dinner on Friday!

Level Up Your Cosplay (1pm, ACC Room 8) - I am super excited for this as someone who loves cosplay and is constantly looking at details going "I have zero idea how to make that happen". Some fantastical cosplayers are going to share some tips and tricks on how to bring your cosplay and props up a notch.

    • Goodbye Broadcast, Hello Animation! (And RTX!)

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

That's a lot to unpack in a title, huh.

Since Day 5 season 2 wrapped last summer I've been freelancing around Austin in whatever I can get my hands on. Commercials, series, live shows, movies...PA, camera, accounting, location manager...I've touched it all bow chicka bow wow. I've spent a lot of time with RT, mostly in broadcast. If you've been around for On The Spot you already know this, especially if you've been in the audience for the Hell season! Being able to work with that department has been fantastic; that group works harder than most people will ever know, and the amount of effort that goes into making all your favorite shows happen (especially live ones) is incredible. I'm super enjoyed my time with them, and I'm grateful I had the opportunity to be a part of so many different productions with them.

Anyone who has lived that freelancer life knows the ups and downs of what work you have (and don't have) is stressful, and that instability and irregularity makes any sort of life planning nearly impossible. I love all of the opportunities that path has afforded me, but I'm too much of a planner to have that be a sustainable lifestyle for too long. In the last few months I've been looking for more full-time work, and last Monday I started a new adventure over in RT's animation department!

I've joined the incredible team working on gen:LOCK as a layout coordinator, and while this is a temporary gig (I'm just here for a few months, not actually staff yet!) I'm excited to be able to contribute to what will be an amazing show. Seriously, what I've seen so far? I'm pumped. You should be pumped too. Especially if you're going to be at RTX

And speaking of RTX, this is going to be my first year in...I don't know, several, that I'm not working. That means you can actually find me! And say hi! And it won't be while I'm sprinting past you! I will of course be spending most of my time around the animation festival, but I'm sure I'll be floating between all of the buildings throughout the weekend. I'm really looking forward to actually getting to experience the convention again and have real conversations with friends and the rest of the community.

If you're coming to RTX, safe travels! Drink water! Eat real food! Talk to people and make new friends! Listen to the Guardians! Say thank you to people who make the stuff you like! HAVE FUN!

Yes, I did sit on that joke for a solid year.

In spite of myself, I survived another trip around the sun. Let's go for another, shall we?

       purple_heart you all.

    • Nintendo E3: Meh

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

I wrote a loooooong post about all of my Nintendo E3 thoughts. I love Nintendo games, but I don't tend to love Nintendo, if that makes sense? If you want to see the live coverage I did with ConCal, you can watch it here. My thoughts after sitting on it for a day? Here. Short version? Scroll just a little bit. Yeah just a little.

      Right there. That's good.

I'm glad we're getting a "new" Super Smash Bros in the form of Ultimate but I don't dare actually call it a new game. It's a remix at best. With a warning to not expect anything in terms of new characters because their goal was to bring back all of the old ones, I'm not saying I won't have fun with it but I am disappointed they spent half of the presentation on a game that's not actually new.

The lack of Metroid Prime 4, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin 4 news is sad but not surprising (especially for the latter two that are simply in various stages of the rumor mill). I'm jazzed for a new Mario Party (especially since they ditched that car business from the last one), and for fans of the series I'm glad there will be a new Fire Emblem and a Xenoblade Chronicles 2 expansion. Daemon X Machina looks like an explodey good time, but with no info beyond "here's some robot combat and you'll get it sometime next year" there's not exactly a lot to be excited about quite yet.

Outside of that, what we saw is multiplatform titles (and even an old Wii U title) receiving ports to come to the Switch, which is simply an artificial catalog expansion. Granted, it needs a catalog expansion of some kind so this nice to see, but "something is better than nothing" is not a sustainable mentality for a console that is now over a year into its life cycle.

Nintendo is doing things that show it realizes it made mistakes during the Wii era and it needs to make changes, but it seems to be continuously taking the wrong lessons away and I'm afraid a good console with great potential is going to suffer for it.

    • Sharing Is Caring

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

I wrote a thing about how you can support your friends and favorite creators. You can read the whole thing on my actual blog, or if you're a CliffsNotes kinda person I've got a neat little short version right here!

If someone makes a thing you like, whether it's art, videos, streams, music, cosplay, photography, dance, underwater basket weaving, ANYTHING, the best thing you can do is share it. Tweet it, put it on Reddit, text it to your friends, poke the person sitting next to you at the library, whatever avenue you have. People often talk about support in the monetary sense, and while that is certainly an important component in someone's pursuit of their craft, never underestimate the value of a new set of eyeballs seeing what someone has created. Do not discount your potential to make a difference based on your follower counts or a perceived lack of weight to your opinions. Sharing it also shows a creator that you liked the thing, and that little bit of feedback can mean the world.

      Long version: go here!

Short version: I'm going to DreamHack this weekend! I'll be around most of each day, and not in cosplay so I'll be easy to find! If you're going to be at the event, totally say hi if you see me. If you're working a booth or showing off a game, let me know where to find you so I can check your stuff out! I'm super excited to be a panelist with this fine crew of folks and check out all the things the show has to offer  purple_heart

    • Improv Is Hard

      LoZelda Supposedly An Adult

I had wanted to take an improv class for quite a while but always talked myself out of it. It's a really intimidating thing to do! I kind of ran out of excuses though, so this past fall I actually signed up for one through the ACC and ended up enjoying it so much I took another two classes at a local improv theater. I'm now 50 classroom hours and 2 on stage performances deep into learning this wacky world and guys...improv is hard.

It's not hard the way you'd likely expect, though. All the basic principles of improv go directly against the behaviors we've established to be members of society. We deflect compliments with modesty and criticism with defiance, our default answer is "no", and we ask questions in conversations to show our interest. Guess what? Improv requires rewiring all of those impulses, and I don't think it will surprise you to hear that that is not an easy feat. Simply recognizing you need to do it and knowing what to look for isn't enough. These are reactionary responses, things you don't even think twice about. I'll bet you don't even notice doing it.

I was vaguely aware of my tendencies before starting the first class, but there's a big ole spotlight on them now. The funny part is that some of these things, while accepted and expected behaviors out in every day life, should be trained out of me anyway. My biggest one: I'm never willing to accept a compliment. Even in fake improv world, if someone says something positive about my character, I still want to say "oh no it's nothing" or downplay it by returning the compliment. Accepting and integrating these things is proving to be a bigger hurdle than I expected. I'm getting better, both on and off stage, but boy was this a twist to what I thought was going to be difficult about getting up and doing this.

Oddly enough, if someone says something negative about my character I'm pretty easily able to lean into it. I'm not entirely sure what that says about me, but playing the asshole in a scene is kind of fun.

Anywho, I wanted to share that observation and try to encourage you to start accepting compliments from people without adding your own caveats or distractions to them. It shouldn't take an improv class for you to recognize your worth  purple_heart That said, absolutely take an improv class. Even just one of the free single session drop ins. It's an enlightening experience!

It's impossible. You are too nerdy and/or geeky to have been 'born'. You were either compiled and/or synthesized; therefor, you cannot have been 'born' nor can you have a 'birthday'.

      Happy Compiled/Synthesized Day!

UNPOPULAR OPINION TIME! I think Breath of the Wild is just okay. It's pretty, and there's a lot it did right, but there's a good deal it did wrong and while it is slowly drawing me in I'm mostly continuing to play simply because I've waited 5 years for a new console Zelda game so damnit I need to play it.

Of course! He's been on my wish list for a good number of months...I just can't bring myself to spend the money on him when I've got cosplay materials I still need to get haha

I personally prefer punching crocodile knock-offs.
