      MANOWARCRAFT

Today at 6:08, my cat died. She lived for nineteen years: older than me, and she has been here since before I was born. She was a stray, and she came to my parents seventeen years ago, where they gave her some milk before she went back into the woods. She returned the next day, and for subsequent days, before staying for good. She's seen the birth of my sister and me and now i've seen her death.

I was with her till the very end. I was there when her breathing became irregular. I was there when the feeble beating of her heart was her only movement. And I was there when that feeble heart stopped. Im crying now. I took a cold shower, but i didn't notice the cold. She can never again feel cold. It's only in the end that you realize the importance of compassion and connections, and I feel like someone has ripped out a part of me, and, more importantly, ripped her away. I wish i believed in heaven. I tried to pray, but I felt nothing in its act. My father cried for the first time in years. He had been cold to her when she was young, often angry, but now he found his mistake. I feel like shit. I was there when she became cold. I lifted her head to see her right eye, and i felt disgusted with how limp it was. I feel so empty that im thinking of drastic things. Hell's name is Death.

My family has a cat who is rather old. (19 years to be exact) Lately, she's been acting weirder than normal, having an obsession with climbing on tables and onto my computer. My dad took her in to the vet, due mostly to her shedding problem, and they found that she was a muck with fleas. And, of course, who does she infect while she is the mothership for those bloodfuckers bloodsuckers? Yours truly. So my carpet, bedsheets, and cloths are infested with fleas, and i have bite marks all over my feet, legs, and arms from them. I can literally feel them jumping onto my legs whenever I go in my room. We washed my clothes and sheets, and vacuumed the carpet, but there are still some there. My dad says that they should die out in a week or so, because their brood mother, my cat, has been given an anti-flea medicine, but it still bugs (pun intended) the crap out of me to constantly feel them jumping and crawling all over me. Oh, yeah, and school starts in a week. Wonderful.

I saw The Dark Knight- and it was amazing. One of the best movies i've ever seen, right up there with Bladerunner. Also, I saw the preview for X-Files movie, which is coming out in 3 days, so in honour of it im watching all the X-Files I can find online and on the Sci-Fi channel. Of course, the biggest news was also broken to me during the previews before Dark Knight- WATCHMEN MOVIE! HOLY CRAP! OH MY GOD! FREAKIN OUT!!! It looks great, judging by the preview. I've even gotten my whole family reading Watchmen right now.

Well, this year father's day was on the same day as my birthday, so that was pretty cool. Over all, though, my party was pretty lame. I woke up and went downstairs to find my dad and mom were in the middle of an argument, then my family scattered and I had to rope 'em all back. Opened cards and opened my 2 presents, (a D.S Lite and a book) although I guess the PS3 I paid half for also counts. Mom got mad when I played my PS3, so I went outside and played DS. Some time later, we gathered back inside to open my dad's gifts for father's day (he got more presents) and then scattered again until dinner time. My parents and my sister got in another argument and my sister went back up to her room, but eventually I got her back down for cake (which was about 3 in. in diameter) Then I played some more MGS (MGS Online is awesome!!!) before taking a shower and retreating to my room.

Also, I've come to realize some things I'm not happy about with MGS4. Now that my fanboy instincts have subsized, I can see the things I don't like about it.

WARNING: May contain spoilers for MGS4:

The first two acts are marvelous, with Snake sneaking through the chaos of a full-on war between the Personal Military Contractors (PMC's) and the local militia. A nifty feature is that by attacking the PMCs you can gain the militia as allies. One thing I didn't like, though, was the respawning enemies. This may not seem to be a big thing, but RESPAWNING ENEMIES?!?!? For Metal Gear Solid?!?! NO! MGS is a series that rewards sneaking and silently eliminating enemies without alerting your presence, and respawning enemies totally negates that. Even if you sneak perfectly past an enemy and put a bullet in his head, it won't matter. For instance, once I was sneaking down an alley to see a team of two PMC's trying to flank the militia nearby. I head behind a van, OctoCamo making me blend in perfectly (another cool feature) and the PMCs moved by me. I crept up behind one and held him in a chokehold, using him as a hostage, and shooting the other in the head. I then slit the PMC's throat who I was holding and proceeded to loot their bodies. By the time I had shaken the last ration and bullet shell from them, I turned to see. . . that they had respawned back down the alley, and it immediately put me into alert status.

My second beef with MGS4 has to do with the first as well: The amount of gunplay. MGS4 has been designed to allow the player to play both sneakily and as an third person action shooter. It works well in theory, allowing the player to switch tactics depending on the situation, but works horribly in reality. There is no reward for sneaking stealthily through the battlefield as you can do just as well carving your way through them with one of the many, many, many assault rifles. It just doesn't feel like the familiar Metal Gear Solid with the amount of gunplay involved.

Another thing: The massive battles. These are a shear given: Snake being cornered while multiple enemies converge on his location. I have no beef with these when they are in line with the metal gear solid theme, that is: your position remaining unknown as you try to pick off the enemies one by one. This worked perfectly in Metal Gear Solid 3, when you are in a shack-like-building and a team of Ocelot's special forces enter the area, and you must eliminate them all to progress. That battle had you sneaking through vents, attempting to flank the enemy while your position was still unknown, and it still allowed you to hide and avoid the enemy if your cover was blown, but they ruined it for me in Metal Gear Solid 4. The enemies are automatically alerted of your position and it turns into a basic third person shooter. It takes the stealth completely out of it.

That theme seems to exist throughout the entire game: sneaking being brushed aside. But even through the criticism I had for the first two acts, they still stand as the best parts of the game. The third act is comprised of (again, more spoilers) a massive beginning map that has you stalking a potential resistance member, which is fun. . . at first. It quickly turns boring as you are pretty much denied the right to take out all the juicy PMC's that are exposing their vulnerable backs to you. Then, the third act descends into a motorcycle chase, reminiscent of the one in MGS3. Finally, it has a boss battle. All in all, the third act is remarkably sub-par.

      MANOWARCRAFT

Warning: May contain spoilers for Metal Gear Solid 4

The fourth act has you returning to Shadow Moses, but instead of Genome soldiers or even the PMC's or militia, it has security robots, which seems fine until you realize that they cannot be killed stealthily, you cannot knock them out with CQC, and when you undergo an alert (which is pretty much unavoidable because the robots are everywhere) literally 50 security bots converge on your position. The screen literally fills up with enemies. No joke. I can not stress this enough. in Metal Gear Solid, it is supposed to become difficult when you alert a whole base of enemies, taht is a given, but it has always been possible to avoid them and cool down the alert. All of that is dashed out from the third act onward (i said 'third' act because the third one has no traditional gameplay at all) When you cause an Alert, your only hope is to charge thorugh with a shotgun and hope to blast your way through a SCREEN-FULL of RESPAWNING enemies. See a problem here?

The fifth act begins with you on the stern of a massive ship, attempting to get into the hull. It is oddly reminiscent of the tanker level in MGS2. However, the familiarities are dashed instantly as you find that you are on a permanent caution level with respawning enemies stalking all over the ship. Once you instigate an alert, it is pretty much impossible to hide unless you purge the whole ship of enemies and make it to the far corner where you started before they respawn. and they respawn almost INSTANTLY. To top it off, you have to get through a water-sealed door, just like in MGS2, that requires you to hold down Triangle as you go through, and if you get hit once while doing it, Snake lets go of the wheel and you have to kill EVERYONE before attempting to open the door again before they respawn. . . AGAIN. After that, you have to go through another of those big bullshit battles in which all the enemies constantly know where you are. Then, after several bosses, the game ends.

That's right. Only the first two acts have any traditional Metal Gear Solid gameplay, and even that is flawed. The story telling is flawless, but it can't replace the void inside I feel at the death of Metal Gear Solid's gameplay. Yes, even Metal Gear Solid 3 wasn't perfect, although I consider it to be the best in the series, but at least it kept the same type of gamplay throughout the whole game, dammit! All your found memories of sneaking through enemy territory and avoiding patrols are dashed to pieces at the end of the second act. I still love MGS4, simply because it IS MGS, but it doesn't feel like it most of the time. It truly hurts me to say these things, because MGS is my favorite game series of all time, but it does need to be said. I'm going back to play some MGS3 to relight the spark.

Recently, I got a PS3 with Resistence: Fall of Man (by all means, a good game.) But I hadn't really used it much until, yesterday at 11:00pm, I got FUCKING METAL GEAR SOLID 4!!! This has been the game I have been looking forward to my whole life, and it's awesome! I got it at 11:00 and I stayed up and played it until 4:00 am. Then, I slept until 10 or 11 and I just got back off of it. It kicks ass! Also, my birthday is tomorrow. Yay me.

edit: Well, I beat MGS4 at 11:00 pm yesterday. It kicked ass. And now it's my birthday. w00t.

Actually I've been told by Nico that he has already signed Team Cannonball.... with 1 roster alteration from the original tournament... up for the winter league. So I'm pretty much committed to them now as always. Sorry. Good luck finding a team. It seems like there is a a lot of folks trying to find teams and not very many forming teams. A lot of wierd alliancing and e-drama. Your best bet is to try and find yourself a good captain. The team can come together around one person easier than anything else. Try to find an adult; or at least someone who behaves like one. Then practice a lot. A bad team that practices will beat a good team that doesn't almost every time.

Sorry, but I cant at the time for the same reasons I didn't join the last tourney. I just have too much work. Maybe more towards summer though ;)

Thanks for asking, but I'm all ready drafted out. If your team is online and needs someone to scrimmage against when I sign in and I'm free I can help you guys practice.

    • JOEPRO

You should make up another team for the tournament in case I am a part of the other teams I am wanted on.

      Mod points could work but...
I am part of Team Cannonball still. Even if Nico says no, the rest of the team might still be in it, which means that I'll be with them.
If they all say no, I have a back up team set up already.
So, a lot has to happen for me to be free for this tournament.

    • JOEPRO

      Yeah I heard.
Right now, Team Cannonball has a reserved spot in it unless Nico decides not to be in it.
If he does, then I am up for hire just for this tournament.
