    • Podcast set concepts

Earlier today I was walking around the art department with Matt and we were looking at old unused sets when I asked him, "Have we ever released the other booth concepts that we didn't go with in favor of the podcast set?"

      Flashback:

In late 2011/early 2012 we had an idea to create a 10'x20' booth that we could take to events and also use as a video podcast set when it was at the studio.  We commissioned an exhibits company to send us three concepts for this idea based on our needs.  The old podcast set is the one that we went with.  We used it at a few events in 2012 but due to the cost of shipping it we ended up converting it to be the podcast set full time and it never went back on the road again.

      Current day:

Matt didn't think we had ever publicly shown the other concepts so I decided to dig through my email and I found the other ideas.

      Concept 3

Since we liked concept 1 the most that is the only one we had re-designed to see how it worked as a podcast set:

Like I said earlier, I don't think we ever shared any of these concepts so I figured some of you may find the process interesting.

    • Looking Behind the Curtain (How Ad Reads Come to Be)

      gus Elite Staff

In the past I’ve thought about writing a journal explaining how some behind the scenes stuff works here at RT, and in light of recent concerns about a sponsor I figured I should give you some insight as to how ad reads happen. I think this is good background info to help shed light on the current situation because I’ve read many misconceptions about the process. I’m going to use Hims as my example in this journal.

I want to start by saying nobody at Fullscreen or Rooster Teeth forces me to read ad copy for a sponsor I didn’t approve. Ads can come in a few different ways. Sometimes external agencies sell against our inventory, sometimes our internal sales team sells them, but regardless of who sells the ad, I deal directly with the RT sales team. When our sales team is talking to a potential new sponsor interested in advertising on RT Podcast they will let me know who the potential sponsor is and ask if I approve or have any concerns or objections. I normally look into the company or product and try to get a feel of how people talk about them online. I’ve disapproved many potential sponsors in the past and have never had pushback when I disapprove one. For example, here is the email I received from the sales team regarding Hims (the email was addressed to the decision makers for the shows listed below):

One of our agencies reached out about this, so let me know if neither/ both or which one would make sense as a sponsor. (Same company, two products- hair loss and erectile dysfunction pills.)

I made it very clear that it would be difficult for us to promote ED pills with a straight face, but apparently they have a sense of humor...

Anyway- understand if this doesn't fit but looking at:

AH Livestream, Heroes and Halfwits AHWU and Off Topic

      Always Open

      Glitch Please and The Know

      RT Podcast

After doing my usual research I came to an easy conclusion (and I only make the decision for RT Podcast):

      I'm fine with both.

Not every show producer was comfortable with this ad read, so some shows turned down the sponsor. Once the sales team hears from the show producer they move forward with getting the ad copy and scheduling the read. Due to the popularity of these reads there can sometimes be a large delay before we do the read. For example, I gave Hims a go ahead on August 14th 2017 but didn’t do the first ad read until March 5th 2018. On February 27th 2018 I had an on-boarding conference call to discuss the campaign with the external agency that sold the ad and the company itself. Normally on these calls we are given background on the company and go over the product and talking points for the product. This is a time for us to have our questions answered directly by the sponsor. We typically only do on-boarding calls for new sponsors but sometimes we’ll have refresher on-boarding calls with long time sponsors who may have new products or talking points. So much time had passed since I initially approved Hims that I had forgotten I approved them. After the on-boarding call I was actually concerned that this campaign had come in unapproved so I sent off an email to the RT sales team verifying that I had approved this campaign. They reminded me of our earlier conversation about this sponsor and I was ready to move forward.

After the on-boarding call we finalize the copy that I will read and the graphics used for the video podcast. Sometimes the sponsor supplies the copy, sometimes they don’t. I don’t know where the Hims copy came from. I think it was written internally because before the second ad read I received a message from one of the producers in the Broadcast department. He was punching up the copy and since he was changing it he wanted approval on it. Here is the message exchange we had:

Hey Gus - I'm punching up these ads for today, wanted to share with you a piece of this so (A) you can check it out and don't get blindsided by stage directions, and (B) so you can object if you hate it. Here's a part where i put a dumb little side comment trying to make these more conversational. LMK if you hate it:
If you have this problem, check out forhims.com, a one stop shop for hair loss, skincare, and sexual wellness for men. *(to panel-->)* I always wondered where you can get that sexual healing they talk about in that song. HIMS provides medical grade solutions, real doctors who offer quality generic equivalents to name brand prescriptions to help you keep your hair where it belongs!

      My reply was:

      Perfect. Thank you for this!

About thirty minutes before the podcast goes live one of our other producers gathers up all the copy for that episode and preps it for me so that I have them all on my laptop to read during the show. I’ll review them and if I have any last minute questions I’ll pop into the control room to chat with the team. If you ever watch the live pre-stream and you see me in the control room with my laptop I’m normally asking a question about copy, ad timing, on screen graphic placement, or something else related to the ad reads. Then we go live and you see the rest. I try to space the ad reads out during the show so that there aren’t too many back to back and we don’t wait until too close to the end of the show.

People often comment on the way I perform ad reads and they frequently have good advice, but I want you to know the methodology behind my approach to the reads. Some viewers ask why I don’t become more energetic or try to be upbeat and incorporate the copy into the show. I try to intentionally maintain a fairly flat delivery so that it is clear when I am doing the ad read and when I’m not. There have of course been exceptions in the past for bigger activations like the Smirnoff “Side Car” or Pizza Hut’s “The Feed”.

Once the show is released I keep tabs on comments on our site and other social media avenues. Part of this is reading how people react to the ad reads. Recently someone contacted me via twitter because they took exception to some ad copy I read for a different sponsor. They felt the copy was worded in a way that was deceptive. I looked at the copy again and could see his point of view. I sent an email to our sales team alerting them to the concern. They looked into it, talked to the sponsor, and the copy was changed to address the concern.

Ok, now that all that background and process is established I’d like to talk more in-depth specifically about Hims.

The controversial reaction to Hims has surprised some of us at RT, including myself. I did my first ad read for Hims on March 5th and the second ad read on April 2nd. The first read focused primarily on the hair loss medication and the second read was the first to mention the erectile dysfunction medication. There wasn’t too much feedback after the first read, but there definitely was a lot more after the second. I wanted to address some of the concerns I saw posted online.

The first concern was that our audience is too young for this type of product and we were marketing pharmaceuticals to teenagers. Some RT shows do have a young demographic but RT Podcast listeners are one of our oldest skewing audiences. An example of the fact that the audience is older is actually shown by the fact we have had alcohol sponsors in the past. In the United States if you advertise alcohol then no more than 28.4% of your audience can be under the age of 21.

Another concern was that the products were “snake oil”. The products sold by Hims are prescription drugs approved by the FDA for the purposes they are advertised for. Finasteride is the generic version of Propecia which is used to treat male hair loss. Sildenafil is the generic version of Viagra which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.

Some commenters were uncomfortable with the idea of this service helping a patient circumvent their in-person doctor visit and get pharmaceuticals through online consultation. I personally thought this was a super convenient idea and I wish I could have this type of regular consultation with my general doctor. I do think this is the future of medicine and doctor appointments. I can definitely see the cause for concern but I don’t want anyone to think that the service just allows you to order pharmaceuticals with no oversight. You do give your medical history to a real doctor via the service who reviews it and your overall health before determining whether or not you qualify for the medications. You can also provide a prescription from your regular doctor if you have one. Either way, you simply can’t buy prescription medicine in the United States without having a prescription from a doctor.

From what I understand I think that the United States and New Zealand are the only countries in the world that allow direct to consumer advertising of prescription medicine. I think this fact is also what has caused some of the concern from our audience. In the US we are used to seeing medicine ads and ignoring the ones that are irrelevant to us. I also think that since the US doesn’t have a national healthcare system that most Americans don’t have a general practitioner that they see so this type of service is attractive to them. That last one is just a hunch I have, no solid proof on that one.

In reading the comments about this topic I discovered one other bit of information I found interesting. Viagra is available over the counter in the UK http://www.bbc.com/news/health-42155489. I don’t bring that up as a justification for the ad reads, just as a bit of information to highlight how different countries treat medicine and the healthcare system differently.

Why didn’t we say anything sooner? I actually wanted to address some of the concern on Monday’s podcast and told Burnie about it before the show went live but we never got around to it. I really wish I had talked about it then because there’s definitely been way more discussion in the community since then. Internally we’ve been talking about this and we have people on all sides of the issue. We couldn’t really make a statement or address this until we knew what we wanted to say.

With this controversy swirling in our community, we realize the easy thing for us to do here would be to cancel our contract with Hims. We do need advertisers to support our podcasts, but we don’t need all of them. We turn down advertisers all the time that we don’t think fit out standards.

However, we don’t want to make a reactionary decision here, because we genuinely do think this is a good service. Many men find talking to their own doctor in person about these issues and other health issues difficult and embarrassing. It’s a real problem. And yes, these issues do affect young men in not insignificant numbers. A service that helps men get past that embarrassment and get help is a good thing.

Rooster Teeth tries to be a sex-positive company. We believe in addressing sex and sex-related issues in open and frank ways, and we think sexual health is important for everyone. If erectile dysfunction medicine helps some people enjoy their lives, then more power to them.

Some members of our community have suggested that it is morally wrong to advertise any prescription medicine whatsoever. Burnie has commented on past podcasts that advertising for prescription medications in the U.S. is way over the top. And by and large, he’s right, especially when you compare the U.S. to the rest of the world, where most countries have no advertisements for it at all. It’s unlikely we will ever partner with another prescription medicine advertiser, it’s not something we seek out. However, we’re not ready to say they are all bad. The health care system in the U.S. is extremely convoluted, which is a much bigger topic than we can address here, but people still need to know about medicines that can help them. This subject just deserves a more nuanced conversation.

Now that you have heard us out and understand our decision making process, we look forward to getting additional feedback from you. Like I said, we want to have an honest and open discussion about this, and one that is based on facts and not rumors or gossip. As the person that has the final say over this and all the other advertisements on the RT Podcast, I feel this is very important to get right. Our community is extremely important to us, and so is making decisions like these for the right reasons. Please leave your comments below and we also look forward to discussing with everyone on the next RT Podcast.

    • Fifteen years?

Fifteen years ago when we launched Rooster Teeth (then redvsblue.com) the top ten most popular websites in the US were: yahoo.com, aol.com, msn.com, microsoft.com, ebay.com, google.com, go.com, netscape.com, windowsmedia.com and weather.com.  Sites like youtube.com, facebook.com and reddit.com did not exist yet.  We were fortunate that we knew how to make websites and had made a few in the past, so when it came time to launch RvB we didn't have to use a Myspace page or host the site on Angelfire, Geocities or Tripod.  We used a content management system similar to WordPress (WordPress didn't exist yet) and set up forums powered by phpBB.  I don't remember why we chose phpBB.  I can't remember if we used it on other sites and liked it or if we picked it randomly.  We cobbled it all together and launched the initial iteration of our community.  The website has evolved (and devolved) over the years but you guys have stuck with us.  I'm super proud of the launch of the latest iteration of the video portion of our website and look forward to continuing to chat with and meet up with you guys for the years to come.  Thank you for all the support and believing in us.  It's been a long road and I hope we're still near the beginning.

    • Rooster Teeth + Full Sail University

      gus Elite Staff

Hey there! I’m here to update you all on a partnership we’re kicking off with Full Sail University. We have a lot planned for the next year, and I thought you all might be interested in hearing about some of the cool things we have planned.

First off, Rooster Teeth has a pretty deep connection with Full Sail University. We have a large amount of their alumni working here, including Ryan Haywood, Brian Reilly, and Will Hyde. It’s always nice to work with institutions that have results we have seen first-hand and can vouch for. We know that a lot of you may have thought about careers in game development, animation, or production, and we see this as a cool way to give you information about programs that can help you get started in those fields.

Now on to the nitty gritty. This partnership will have several different components. For the first part, Brian Reilly, Chad James, Alfredo Diaz, and I are attending Full Sail’s Hall of Fame event this week. We’ll be filming the whole thing, including my keynote to students and behind-the-scenes footage of the introduction to an exciting project we’re working on with Full Sail (more info on that in a bit). We’re also hosting a special livestream about that project on the Rooster Teeth Facebook page on February 14.

So, what is this project? We’re calling it the “Super ‘80s Fighter Project,” and it’s as radical and totally tubular as it sounds. (I’m so sorry for that.) Basically, Rooster Teeth will be working with Full Sail students to develop an ‘80s fighter game, providing them with our annoying opinions and advice. After we introduce the project in the livestream on February 14, we will check in about once a month to focus on different parts of the game and the students’ progress. It’s a great way to learn more about what all goes into developing a video game.

Full Sail will be at RTX Austin this year (FYI, it’s August 3-5), and attendees will have a chance to play the finished “Super ‘80s Fighter Project” game on the expo floor. Full Sail will also be the presenting sponsor of Indie Alley. They’ll bring the Full Sail Mobile Experience (a big rig truck loaded with gear) to the floor for RTX attendees to explore and learn more about the university and the project we worked on with them, so make sure you check it out.

I’m looking forward to everything this partnership has in store for us. Stay tuned!

    • Holy Shit, Andy Serkis???

      gus Elite Staff

It hurts to admit this, but I’m really proud of our events team for taking over an event that means so much to all of us at Rooster Teeth. RTX Austin has somehow gotten even bigger and better despite the fact that I stepped down from overseeing it. In fact, this year is shaping up to be our biggest, best RTX ever. We have already announced tons of exciting events, guests, and panels, but today I have the special honor of talking about one of our most exciting guests/events/panels.

      Wait for it…

Andy Serkis, star of War for the Planet of the Apes, will be a keynote speaker at RTX Austin 2017 in a special panel hosted by Gray Haddock and Kerry Shawcross! You might also know him as Gollum and Snoke, among many other roles.

But wait, there’s more. We are also hosting a special screening of War for the Planet of the Apes at 7:00 pm on July 7 at the Paramount Theater. That’s right – RTX attendees can see it before it hits theaters this summer!

Hold up, though, because there’s even more. Serkis and four-time Academy Award-winning Senior VFX Supervisor Joe Letteri will also host an exclusive Q&A after the screening! All of this is completely free for RTX 2017 attendees – all you need is your RTX Austin 2017 badge. (VIP attendees get priority admittance, by the way.)

If you want to get in on this, single-day and weekend passes for RTX Austin 2017 are still available at http://rtxaustin.com, starting at just $35.00.

      PS:

This was all my idea and I remain the true king of RTX.

      PPS:

I forget, is it PPS or PSS?

      PPPS:

      Oh, I remember now.

    • Hideo Kojima at RTX Sydney

      gus Elite Staff

Hey, guys, if you’ve been thinking about attending RTX Sydney in February but don’t have tickets yet, this little bit of news should push you over the edge: legendary game developer Hideo Kojima will be attending RTX Sydney!

It’s been some time since Hideo’s been to Australia (about ten years), and we’re honored that he chose RTX to make his return to the country. While we have him, Kojima-san will take part in a discussion moderated by Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller, where he’ll talk about game development and his storied history as one of the medium’s greatest innovators. As huge fans of the Metal Gear franchise, and eager consumers of any news about his future projects, we can’t wait to hear what he has to say.

For those of you who can make it to RTX Sydney, we hope to see you there to share this incredible moment with us. Get your tickets today at RTXSydney.com so you don’t miss out!

Mr. Sorola, what changes and/or expansions can we expect from Rooster Teeth in the near future? What role do you intend to play in terms of developing new content and projects from here on out?

Can't really answer what we're doing in the future.  These days I'm researching VR/AR/360 video and trying to find ways RT can incorporate them and what best practices are.

Just saw Off Topic and wanted to send some feedback.

I've been watching the content and have seen all the angry people on the site and on Reddit and admit that I was skeptical of the whole advertising process at RT.  In particular, something about the Hims ads made them seem...I guess sketchy is the best word, and I was a little concerned.  Although to be fair, I was not concerned to the point where I was going to boycott your content or change my subscription status, like some of the pissed off people online.

I read your journal entry.  Thanks for the transparency, it definitely helped.  I was starting to come around after that, but you and Geoff appearing on Off Topic really gave a human touch to your explanation and I no longer have any concerns about your current advertising practices.  I hope it will convince some of the naysayers, and I appreciate the efforts you guys are going to to really address the community's concerns.

Podcast Gus was so angry to me in my dream that I woke up half way through the apology and kept apologizing.

      Yeah, fucked up.

RTpodcast was going on, and I was walking around my mansion/pool listening to it on my phone. You guys would say something funny and I'd laugh and comment out loud to myself. Did that for 30 minutes. Then you said something and I said "Oh man, that's funny Gus" and you stopped and spiked the camera and said "Can you just SHUT THE FUCK UP FOR 5 FUCKING MINUTES! GOD DAMN MAN!!"

I stopped, and I sheepishly said "Can.....you all hear me?"

"YES, YOU WON'T SHUT THE FUCK UP... GODDAMN!!"

Burnie piped in and was all "Hey Gus, let's roleplay, you be you, and I'll be fucking Moeparker and I'll keep interrupting the podcast, how about that, let's do that for the next fucking hour"

Around that time I woke up, but for the next minute I was talking into my pillow trying to calm Brandon down. He was talking to me and he was upset that I didn't mute my phone. I kept saying "I'm sorry, I didn't know" as I rolled over and then I looked at the clock. I mentioned to him that it was 345am. I looked around for angry Brandon was he wasn't there.

I got up to check if I was really awake. Yep. I went from dream to real but the dream didn't stop, my brain kept it going.

So yeah, you got so mad at me for ruining the dream podcast that I woke up and was still apologizing. Your anger is powerful.

Hearing you guys talking about best game of 2015 in the RTX stream, I'm gonna toss this in there - Have you tried Undertale yet? My friend kinda pestered me to play it and I thought it was all hype and some kind of circlejerk for another indie game, but I finally succumbed and gave it a shot.

I was dead wrong. It's a truly amazing game. In fact, one of the best ever made I would say, and I NEVER say that about things lightly - I've been playing since I was 3. This earnestly competes with the likes of Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy VI and IX, Half-Life, Portal, etc. Unless you're off-put by throwback graphics, but seeing the stuff you guys have played I know you're cool with it.

Unless you're some kind of heartless monster, you'll feel things for NPCs in a video game that you haven't felt in a long-ass time and it'll have a place in your heart for the rest of eternity. Choose your path well - I just say right now that there's a way to save everyone, you never need to kill anyone. That's all I'll say, choose your path from there.

Errr... you do play PC/Mac games too right? Just wondering. Heck I'd gift it to ya on Steam if you'd play it - it's just that awesome and I think everyone needs to experience this game.

Anyway, I coulda left this for any one of you, but I suppose I figured if anyone reads their RoosterTeeth profile comments the most then it might be you. Pass it on to Geoff if you think he'd be more likely to take it up, I kinda thought "Well Gus would be more likely to see what I have to say to begin with... and Geoff would be more likely to actually try it... hmm...". And correct me if I'm wrong about that, but I know you were the one that changed my name a couple years back because of a comment, so I know you check (assuming your habits are the same). You can just forward it to whoever at RT plays PC games to have them try it if you don't.

Also, if you get the chance, tell everyone I said great job at RTX. I know it doesn't mean much and I'm just another fan, but really, I don't know how people like you guys can get up in front of a ton of people like that. I figure you kinda numb to it over the years, but really, what you guys do on a daily basis takes some guts.

      Later!

Edit: Screw it, went ahead and copied the same thing over to Geoff's profile in case. Hope you guys don't mind a duplicate every once in a while.

Today is the anniversary of my mom's death. She passed away when I was 12. I am 18 now and looking back I don't think I could of made it through that time without you guys.

I had the support of my family and friends, but Rooster Teeth made me laugh again. You guys made me smile. I wanted to properly thank you for that. So thank you! Every last one of you. Thank you.

Out of all the members of RT, just wanted to leave a message saying that you're definitely my favorite.

Without intending to sound too intentionally creepy, whenever I'm doing something, instead of music, I pop on the podcast. and because of that I guess I've listened to each episode around ~5 times over the years. It helps that my memory is shit and I can laugh at all the jokes again.

      Anyway, keep on staying awesome.

Watching Gus on the Extra Life stream last night might have been the funniest thing I have ever seen come out of Rooster Teeth.
One of the best nights I've had.

I don't ask for much Gus, but once a month (or something around that) could we have Miles, Kerry, Michael, and Lindsay back on the RT podcast? I haven't laughed that hard in months. It was like watching a Drunk Tank meets Internet Box, it was beautiful. Please, PLEASE let them come on again. Thank you.

      Hey Gus,

I Don't know if this has been shown to you before or not. http://avherald.com/ is a website about official and in depth reports on aviation accidents and incidents. The site is updated as incidents happen and give significantly more information than the news puts out. Enjoy!

Remember Randy Quaid? Yeah, neither does anyone else. But apparently he and his wife have spent the last five years in Canada avoiding warrants in California. Seems they tried to cross the border and got busted.

I see you guys haven't figured out how light-field cameras work since first time you mentioned it. To solve the mystery for you: Light field cameras have an array of microlenses at the focal distance of the main lens, with the sensors behind the array. Normally light coming from something that is not in focus will miss the focal point of the lens and the sensor. The microlens array catches that off-focus light and redirects it, allowing the sensor to collect not just the brightness and color of the light, but also the direction it's coming from. The directional information is then used by the software to reverse-engineer the focus on-demand.

So, on the Podcast this week you guys were asking who would fill a bottle quicker, men or women, and here's a study on how all mammals actually evacuate their bladders at the same rate, so assuming that men and women hold the same amount of urine they should fill a bottle at the same rate. http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/seriouslyscience...

Gus, I challenge you to a Hearthstone fight. It will be a 'Best of 3' style. Pick 3 classes and choose one class to not allow me to pick and I will do the same. Do you accept the challenge?

  • Questions answered by gus

Can't really answer what we're doing in the future.  These days I'm researching VR/AR/360 video and trying to find ways RT can incorporate them and what best practices are.

I think the Vive is the best one overall so far, but I have not tried the Oculus Touch controllers yet.

It was pretty early on.  I was the first person to "work" at RT full time so I definitely believed.  I don't think there was one moment, it was definitely many things happening at once.

Wellington (New Zealand), San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, or Chicago.

Currently no announced plans.  Jordan is a Colts fan, maybe he'll end up there to watch a game at some point.

I don't know if there is a book, I just practiced to learn how to do it.  Took maybe a year or so before I got really good at it.  The first and easiest steps are to create a routine.  Don't read in bed, don't watch tv in bed, don't use your phone in bed.  Train your brain that when you lay down in bed it is time to shut off.  After that it is a matter of just calming yourself and clearing your mind.

Yes.  I no longer own it and it is a parked domain so I won't write it down here.

I do but I really don't use them. I may start using them in the future and if I do I will begin promoting them.

Show someone the whale encounter as a first experience since it doesn't require the controllers. The Lab is a good way to get them familiar with the basics of VR, then show them Tilt Brush and Job Simulator.

Love Chicago but don't make it out there very often. I'm more of a West coast fan than an East coast fan. I like San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas. Really depends on what you're looking to do.

I was actually not a fan at the time. I thought some of the new mechanics overcomplicated the game. As time has gone on I've grown to appreciate the game more.

Yes. Damn, so much wasted opportunity.

Yes, also keep in mind there will be some exclusive merchandise there. We also will have to charge you Texas sales tax which may be different than what you would pay where you are located.

I find myself frustrated with crowds and people when in public. I'm probably actually afraid of crowds but I can suppress it when at events and doing public appearances. I'll occasionally have small freak out when having to do something in a crowded place.

Hard to say. Delivering video was tough. Making time to actually make videos was tough (everybody had a full time job). Paying the bandwidth bill was also really daunting. Those are the ones that pop to mind right away.

Soonish. The set is done but we are spending a little more time working on the graphics package to give them a refresh.

    Can you play any instruments?

    | Asked by: JakeHCoker 2 years ago

I took guitar lessons for a while when I was about ten years old but haven't played since then.

Bethany has taken over my RTX responsibilities so I am not involved nearly as much as I have been in the past. Barbara and Bethany take care of RTX panels. Bethany evaluates and decides what events RT attends.

I typically use a MacBook Air. This past week I experimented with a Surface Pro 4.

Do whatever the fuck you enjoy. Don't get a degree and hope that it gets you a job at AH/RT. Get a degree in something you're genuinely passionate about and showcase that passion.

Be able to critically think and analyze problems. Don't be dumb.

There isn't really one source. I just read whatever I come across.

I shave it off every now and then. Never more than a week or two without it.
