With tickets being announced yesterday, I wanted to gauge interest in anyone that wants to drive to RTX with my brother and me. This past year was our first RTX, we drove from Maryland, and had an absolute blast doing it, but we aren't sure if we can swing the cost again this year with just the two of us. This is why I'm posting, to see if anyone else would be interested in sharing the drive.
So please, let us know if this is something you would want to do. We're looking for 1-2 people to help split costs and driving. I'll post some basic info below so you know what you'd be getting into.
First of all, full disclaimer, we don't know if we can 100% go at this point, so don't get it twisted and think that by saying you're interested that you're committed. We need to see if anyone is truly willing to do this with us and get a basic cost projection before we decide. But by letting me know that you are serious, we can move ahead faster with the planning.
Some basic info.
-My brother and I are both 26 and we live in Northeastern Maryland.
-It would make life easier if you were from this area, so we can potentially meet up beforehand, but we'd be willing to work with anyone who wants a ride.
-Anyone interested in joining us really should be at least 18. (Not that we have a problem with kids, but we wouldn't feel quite right transporting a minor half way across the country unaccompanied by their parent/guardian.)
-You must be able to drive (duh).
-Costs of gas will be split evenly.
-Meals are all individually handled.
-We plan on sightseeing along the drive.
What did we spend last year? Between the 2 of us, we spent about a little under $300 on the road trip portion of the trip, and that includes there and back. The biggest portion of that was on gas, which cost over $200 each. Now, this year will most likely not be the same, but if it's close and 4 of us split this drive, you're looking at roughly $150-$200 on travel. Flights from Philly to Austin right now are priced at over $300 for a round trip ticket, so the savings add up.
We opted last year to do an Airbnb stay in Austin, which was fantastic and cheap, but we're considering a hotel a little closer to downtown. If you would like to make your own accommodations, that makes sense, but know that we would be willing to share a hotel room to help drive down the cost. That can get a little tricky with 4 people in a room, but it's something that can be discussed at a later date.
Our trip to RTX last year was equal parts excitement for the convention, and excitement for the road trip. We planned our drive around stopping and seeing landmarks and big cities, and this is something that we want to do again. Our route still took us towards Austin, but we added detours as we wanted, so don't expect this to be a straight shot directly to Austin. We're exploring the country, and hope that you have the same adventurous spirit, and we'd love to hear anything you might want to see too.
I'm sure there's a ton of other info to discuss, but this should be all the basic intro stuff out of the way.
