With tickets being announced yesterday, I wanted to gauge interest in anyone that wants to drive to RTX with my brother and me.  This past year was our first RTX, we drove from Maryland, and had an absolute blast doing it, but we aren't sure if we can swing the cost again this year with just the two of us.  This is why I'm posting, to see if anyone else would be interested in sharing the drive.

So please, let us know if this is something you would want to do.  We're looking for 1-2 people to help split costs and driving.  I'll post some basic info below so you know what you'd be getting into.

First of all, full disclaimer, we don't know if we can 100% go at this point, so don't get it twisted and think that by saying you're interested that you're committed.  We need to see if anyone is truly willing to do this with us and get a basic cost projection before we decide.  But by letting me know that you are serious, we can move ahead faster with the planning.

      Some basic info.

-My brother and I are both 26 and we live in Northeastern Maryland.

-It would make life easier if you were from this area, so we can potentially meet up beforehand, but we'd be willing to work with anyone who wants a ride.

-Anyone interested in joining us really should be at least 18.  (Not that we have a problem with kids, but we wouldn't feel quite right transporting a minor half way across the country unaccompanied by their parent/guardian.)

-You must be able to drive (duh).

-Costs of gas will be split evenly.

      -Meals are all individually handled.

-We plan on sightseeing along the drive.

What did we spend last year?  Between the 2 of us, we spent about a little under $300 on the road trip portion of the trip, and that includes there and back.  The biggest portion of that was on gas, which cost over $200 each.  Now, this year will most likely not be the same, but if it's close and 4 of us split this drive, you're looking at roughly $150-$200 on travel.  Flights from Philly to Austin right now are priced at over $300 for a round trip ticket, so the savings add up.

We opted last year to do an Airbnb stay in Austin, which was fantastic and cheap, but we're considering a hotel a little closer to downtown.  If you would like to make your own accommodations, that makes sense, but know that we would be willing to share a hotel room to help drive down the cost.  That can get a little tricky with 4 people in a room, but it's something that can be discussed at a later date.

Our trip to RTX last year was equal parts excitement for the convention, and excitement for the road trip.  We planned our drive around stopping and seeing landmarks and big cities, and this is something that we want to do again.  Our route still took us towards Austin, but we added detours as we wanted, so don't expect this to be a straight shot directly to Austin.  We're exploring the country, and hope that you have the same adventurous spirit, and we'd love to hear anything you might want to see too.

I'm sure there's a ton of other info to discuss, but this should be all the basic intro stuff out of the way.

I had a scary moment earlier today when I logged in to check the status of my Double Gold box, only to see that my DG status had been lost.  I immediately went to my account status and email to check on the problem.  I had no notifications of any kind regarding this change.  I contacted customer support via the chat feature and must first say that despite my concerns and frustrations, the support tech was very helpful.

What I learned though, is that RT doesn't send any sort of notification if there is a problem with charging your card.  Direct quote from my chat support log: Unfortunately RT does not send payment failure notifications.  It seems like my card info hadn't been updated, so RT was unable to process my payment, but instead of notifying me of the issue, they revoked my Double Gold status.

I was lucky that it was still the first of the month and could fix my membership, as you'll notice those 2 wonderful stars are back next to my name.  But I thought I should let others know to check your payment info and make sure that it stays up to date, especially in the days leading up to the next billing date.  RT won't notify you if something is wrong, and since it seems like DG is sold out, you could very easily lose your membership and not get it back for another month.

I did ask the tech to pass along my concerns about this process.  While I don't expect RT to baby sit us and tell us every little thing we have to do, changes in account status are something I would expect.  Sometimes payment issues are beyond our immediate control and if something dire happens, we may not always think of every site that needs updating.  That's why other sites will notify you and let you know there was an issue and give you enough notice to fix the issue.  This is something I hope RT sees and takes into consideration, because I have been a DG since RTX this year and would have been quite upset if I lost my membership over a technicality.

This is my first RTX and my brother and I are super excited to go down to Austin. Finances being what they are however, we realized pretty quickly that flights were out of our budget. So we decided, "ROAD TRIP!" We've always wanted to drive across the country and this has offered the perfect opportunity.

My thought for this thread is that anyone who has decided to put the pedal to the metal can share their ideas, tips, routes, and whatever else you want.

Coming from the northeast part of Maryland, our driving time is going to be around 24 hours, so that means two days of being on the road each way. I've found a road trip planning site, furkot.com, that seems like a really powerful tool to help schedule stops for things like gas and sleep. Our tentative plan for the return trip is to travel east along the gulf coast, hitting cities like Houston, New Orleans, and Mobile (I think), and then driving along the Atlantic coast, just to make our drive more scenic.

I'm wondering why sometimes I notice that a video appears on YouTube before it shows up on the site here. For example, right now, 12 PM EST, a Funhaus Demo Disc video titled, "Vampire Meet N Suck" (I know it's a great video to use as an example) isn't listed on the RT site anywhere that I can see, but I'm able to watch it on YouTube. It also says that it was posted 3 hours ago.

My question is, why? I would think it would make more sense for a video to be published here first to draw more viewers to the site, and then get pushed to YouTube later. Is there some logic behind showing up on YT first that I don't understand?

I guess I'll just post a quick little thing here to get started. I've tried a few times to be more active on this site, as RT, AH, and know Funhaus provides most of my video entertainment, but I've never been very successful. Hopefully now with the new site I will be more engaged and make a conscious effort to watch videos here more than on YouTube (I definitely don't take advantage of my sponsor status enough), and since the comments here are by far more accessible than there, I'll be able to start interacting with folks who share my interests. I'm not sure if these posts are accessible to anyone outside of my profile, so I'm not sure who all will see this, but at least I can use this as a starting point for myself, if nothing else comes from it.
